id like to buy a nice rimfire rifle, i was looking at the rem 597 hb ls magnum in 17 hmr...anyone ever owned/fired one of these?? id like to try to figure out what kind of accuracy to expect out of the box. would i be better off to buy a used 10/22 mag and convert it to 17? it would cost like twice as much to do that but my main concern is good accuracy. id like to get something in the 1" moa at 100y department. am i being unrealistic or expecting to much??? lemme know what you think.... thanks!

Squirrel sniper You are after my own heart. I have a Remington 597 22lr and they shoot beautiful. Dick's sporting goods is offering them with a scope for $147.00. 50 squirrels hate me and died for the cause with this gun. Accurate

I have a Marlin 925 in .22lr that will shoot quarter size and smaller groups of 7 at 50 yards. Really like the thing.

It can knock over shotgun shells at 100 yards.

I had a brand new Rem 597 and sold it within a month, last year. It would not reliably feed any type of ammo and would put me in a sour mood whenever I attempted to use it. People will say that the "new" ones with a "new style" magazine work as they are supposed to, and that all the 597's problems have been fixed. Mine was a new one. It was very accurate, when it would fire.

If you buy one of those make sure you have a buyer grace period in case it turns out to be a lemon.

i already have a 10/22 (not magnum) and im kinda wanting a 17 hmr rifle, as far as i know, ive got two choices for an auto. 1) rem 597 and 2) ruger 10/22 mag with a barrel conversion.... id probably rather go with the rem 597 cause it will be way less of a pain in the ass and a lot less money by the time i do the 10/22 although the 10/22 does have the distinct advantage of 32 and 50 round clips readily available!! but im definatly not llooking for another 22 lr.- thanks

I say go for the 597. My shooting buddy had one in .22lr, and while it wasn't as reliable (he had this one a while ago) and didn't have all the aftermarket goodies, it was accurate......very accurate.

I doubt you'll be dissapointed with the 597.

I had a remington 597 in 22 mag with the laminated stock & heavy barrel. it was reliable, never jammed, but the accuracy seemed erratic.it would be on target at first,& then as the barrel heated up, it seemed to drift to the right.you may have better accuracy with the 17.i also didnt like the trigger.it seemed to have lots of creep & play, due to a linkage that floats instead of having a rod running from one end to the other.i noticed this when i disassembled it.& good luck re assembling the guide rods if you do take it apart, that was a lot of fun, too.:banghead: i also noticed the reciever is made of a cast metal,& the bolt had real bad machining marks on the left side, almost like the end was just cut off with a saw.:barf: i guess i'm a little spoiled,'cause my other 22 mag is an hk300,which when shot side by side blew the remington out of the water...........
