I have always wondered what a .300 winchester is ideal for? What would be considered the "common use" for this round? I know its a bit much for deer at short ranges ( equals no meat) but it useful at long ranges or when there is lots of wind.

Could it be considered an ideal elk round? I have always wondered what this caliber was intented for or what the practical use is now. thanks

"what is a .300 winchester is ideal for?" pushing a .30 cal. bullet really fast.

"What would be considered the "common use" for this round?" same as a .30-06 with a little less concern with bullet drop at distance.

"I know its a bit much for deer at short ranges ( equals no meat) but it useful at long ranges or when there is lots of wind." i know guys who use it on deer and if you use proper weight bullets it'll work.

"Could it be considered an ideal elk round?" ideal, not to me but it'll work.
if i'm want a dedicated elk and larger rifle i'd go with the .338.

Elk. But there are probably more, I mean what caliber is ideal for what is very dependent. But Roy Weatherby said that any game on North America you could use the 257 and 300 Weatherby and never look back. The 300 win is not too far behind the weatherby, so I would assume that the 300 Win would be good for anything in North America bigger than deer, but smaller that Grizzly.

No more meat damage at close range than a .308 if you choose a proper bullet. a little flatter shooting and a little more punch at longer range than the 30-06.
I've used mine for deer and elk with very good terminal results.

i use a 300 win mag a lot, and even on deer busted at about 30 yards there is no more or no less meat loss than deer busted in excess of 400 yards.

300 win mag is ideal for about anything. works wonders on prairie dogs. kills deer dead...

Probably the premiere Elk caliber, though I really prefer 7mm Rem Mag. It would also work on Nilgai on the King Ranch, if you ever got the chance and/or the money to do that. Nilgai take a good bit of killin' from what I understand, never shot one, ain't rich enough for King Ranch prices and I'm no outlaw. But, Elk sized game inside 400 yards if you wanna shoot that far.

Long range big game harvesting & a sore shoulder if you use it repeatedly at the range . . .

I like .300 mag for elk, moose, bear, & caribou.

What is a .300 winchester ideal for?

Excessive recoil.

Seriously, there aren't many things that it's neccesarily for. Good for long range shots, at big game. But so are many other calibers.

In short, if it "floats your boat", great. But not neccesarily for 99% of hunting purposes.

It is a great caliber for bucking the wind when deer or antelope hunting.

It also works great for either when the wind is not blowing.

I will not comment on elk, since I never hunted those critters before.

1,000 yard any rifle/any sight sniper competitions. Know a guy, up here, who uses a custom built, 17.5 lb, .300 mag with a Douglas Premium SS barrel and 190 grain match bullets. He wins regularly too.
You don't need a .300 mag for anything in North America except maybe big bears. Certainly not for elk, moose, bear or caribou.

In a nice light weight package it makes for a very serious contender as one of the better sheep and goat hunting rifles. If big bears are on the menu I like more diameter and weight over just velocity.
