Hello, I just got a Benelli Supernova which comes with a cylinder choke. It's main use will be for plinking waterbottles in the woods which we typically shoot out to 25 yards. Too far for the choke the gun comes with. I suppose I will need the modified choke for the tightest pattern at this distance? Home defense will be its secondary funcition but I suppose any choke would work for a defensive situation. Any advise would be great! Thanks, Sammy

Sammy, the cylinder choke is good for defense with buckshot, target shooting with birdshot to 25+ yards I would use a modified or full choke.

You could always pick up one of those truglo Poly Chokes . Then you would have all of them and you could let me know how they work . :D

I have a choke question too . How long does a barrel have to be for a choke to do any thing . I had some one tell me that if the barrel is less then 24'' , then it didn't matter what choke you use . Is that true .

RK, barrel length has no effect on patterning worth worrying about. It does effect velocity and that can slightly change things.

One of the 870 barrels here is a nominal 21" and fitted for choke tubes. It gives tight patterns with a tight choke and good ammo and open patterns with an open choke and cheap stuff.

What greatly affects spread is velocity, shot hardness, effectiveness of the shot cup, the pressure curve, choke constriction, choke profile, forcing cone profile, the tide, moon and whether you're getting enough sleep. Barrel length doesn't.

The archives have plenty of stuff on this....
