Lyman M-die for rifle loading?

Lyman claims that their M-die expander will not cause cases to strech like the expander ball on the typical full length sizing rifle die. It would be worth the extra reloading step if it reduced the need to trim brass. Has anyone experimented with this?

The M-die definitly helps with loading lead bullets so it is useful, but what about the case strech claim?

The M die expands the case neck on the way down into the case. The expander button on a FL die expands the neck on the way up and out of the case.

The LEE 90798 Universal Case Expanding Die works better than the Lyman for cast bullets, is more controllable and less expensive. That's what gets recommended the most for rifle bullets (I'm making the assumption this is what you are loading.) over on the cast boolit forum.

But I don't think either one is going to eliminate the need for trimming brass. I use nothing but the M die on my rifle reloads. But I've had to trim my 270 brass at least once. The resize operation is what causes it to grow in length, and the regular expander ball just makes growth potentially worse.

If you don't want to trim, RCBS has a resize die that prevents case growth (I think its their X die).

Mark is correct. The FL sizer without the expander ball will still stretch the case some, but less than with the expander ball.

They dont make a good means to insert a cast bullet in a 7.62 x 39 case during reloading. The .32 M-Dies bell the case exactly as I need them.

Since Lee's turret press is set up for belling the case on the upstroke to charge the powder in the rifle charging die connected to the autodisc powdermeasure I decided to hybridize the M-Die tip to it.

The 7.62 x 39 rifle charging die insert in the die is suited for the jacketed bullet. I sawed off the end, drilled and tapped a 3/8 x 24 tpi hole in the end and screwed the .32 cal M-Die tip into it, and once the length was adjusted for best belling, I was able to auto-bell the case for cast bullets while charging powder with the Lee Turret press.

Now, with my Dillon, I use their .30 carbine insert for their powder charging die and it achieves the same thing for 7.62 x 39 cast loads as well as .30 carbine (which I reload too.)

The rest of the M-Die has been in a drawer for 6 years

Does anyone know if the Lyman Powder Through Expander die has the same profile(s) on the expander(s) as their M dies?

The M die in 7.62x25 is great, BTW!
