NewB - Question regarding new equipment

My press and components are trickling in, so on the weekends I’m opening boxes and looking inside.

First open was the box from Hornady, The Lock-n-Load Powder Drop with the case activated mechanism. Read the directions first, then started to assemble. The first thing I notice is that the entire powder drop is covered with oil and a few metal shavings from the manufacturing process.

Obviously we want to remove any metal shavings left over from manufacturing. So my question is, do I remove all of the oil?

I’m assuming that the powder drop will eventually become self lubricated from the powder itself.

Thanks in advance, KC

KC,

Clean up the entire press and reoil only those things that obviously need lubrication from a mechanical standpoint. The oil you mention is preservative, not lubrication. Clean it off using denaured alcohol, q-tips and a synthetic rag so you don't get fuzzies.

Once the case activated powder drop and measure is clean, don't recoil them. The powder has additives in it that act as lubrication for the powder measure. Hornady mentions a couple places you'll want to lube with non oil dry lubricant. You can use Hornady One shot case lube for this purpose.

Regards,

Dave

Yes, my RCBS progressive instruction stated to remove the preservative from inside and out or there could be negative consequences in regards to powder throw consistency and the powder/preservative mix could gum up the works and maybe cause a primer or two to dud out on you also.

Whoops...Hornady One Shot is NOT a dry lubricant..:uhoh:..Graphite is, but draws moisture. Oil moving (rubbing) parts with light grease or gun oil. Make sure that there is no grease or oil inside the powder drop or any other place that powder may come into contact during the reloading process.
