I shoot 110, 150, 165 and 180 grain loads, care to recommend a good, versatile powder? I have been using IMR 4064, muzzle flash is too intense for any kind of serious target shooting. All I see is a fireball through my scope.

I like IMR4350 with 150s on up. I don`t know about flash, I shoot in daylight and haven`t noticed any with either 4064 or 4350.

I use H4831SC for 165 grain BTHP and 180 grain BTSP with good results...

Huh. Learn something new every day! I've only used 3031 and 4064 for max loads. I've loaded a box of 180s with H414, but haven't gone to the benchrest to try them out, yet.

Never noticed muzzle flash. It was usually gone by the time I was back down from recoil...

I really like H4350 for the '06. Haven't noticed any flash during daylight shooting.

I started out with IMR 4831 been very happy with that. Some of my other favorites are IMR 4320,4350, and 3030

I like IMR-4350 and Hornady 165-grain BTSPs for mule deer. I've never noticed any muzzle flash.

For 150, 165, and 168 gr projectiles, I've had good success with the following powders:

H-4895
IMR-4895
W-748
IMR-4064

I never have loaded the '06 for HOT loads.
I've found that a 'middle of the road' velocity has yielded the most accurate loads.

For handloads, I've used only 165 and 168 grain bullets in the 30/06. I've had excellent success with Varget. One of my loads with 165 grain Barnes solids goes into about 0.6 inchds at 100 yards out of my Encore for 3 shots. Barnes Triple Shocks hit about the same place as the solids and group a tiny bit over an inch.

no muzzle flash with 4064? you must not be shooting in low light or at night.

180 grain Hornady SST + 48 grains 4064 = fireball

looks like IMR is well-liked, I'll try some of their other powders recommended, thanks.

Alliant Reloader 15. I use it in Garand, M1A, 03A3, and others. I love this stuff. RE-15 is also the military's choice for the M118LR sniper round.

Golly, IMR 4064 is about the most flexible for the bullet range you are wanting to shoot. Well, try IMR 4895. It will work outstandingly well for the 30-06 with the 110 through 175 grain bullets. IMR 4350 works best with bullets 165 grain and up.

I have also used AA#4064 in the 308, so it should do equally well in the 30-06. Maybe their brand will give less muzzle flash.

The ball powders I have tried generally give more muzzle flash than the extruded powders.

For what rifle? A Garand has gas port restrictions that bolt guns don't have to contend with. Also, a good powder for a 110gr bullet is not a good powder for a 180gr powder. Assuming you are talking about a Garand, you might try some IMR4895. Not the best for 110gr bullets or 180gr bullets, but a good compromise. If loading for a bolt gun, I would use a 4350 burn rate powder for the heavier bullets, and perhaps IMR4895 for the lighter bullets.

I like 4350. But with a couple reservations:

1. I don't shoot anything lighter than 150.
2. Bolt guns only. 4350 would not be good in a garand. Too slow of a powder.

It's a bolt Mossberg 100ATR, though hopefully I will be loading for a Garand in time.

Isn't excessive flash a sign of unburned powder resulting from overload?

The Bushmaster

No...Not necessarily...Some powders make more flame then others. Like the difference between gasoline and diesel fuel. All (or most) powders are completely burned in the case and a short distance down the barrel. Black powder is known to be burning after it leaves the barrel if loaded to hot.

Another vote for H4895. I had a lot that was phenomenally consistent. 48.0grains w/ Hornady 150gr SP would deliver right at the mark of 2800FPS, and with ~ 15fps EXTREME SPREAD. Wish I had 8 more pounds of it...

I use WW760 and H450 for all .30-06 loads.

IMR 4320 with 150 or less grain bullets works very well, is accurate, isn't real popular around here for some reason. It meters easily, also burns completely so presures are more consistent. Try it also in 243 and 6mm, very accurate in my rifles.

Reloader 19 or 22 for 165 and 180 grain bullets. I dont do any heavier than 180.

30-06--
RL 22--59 grain
Nosler or most any 165 gr bullet
COL--about 15-20 thousands off the lands measured with a Stoney Point (now Hornady I hear)
CCI large rifle primers
FL sized prior to first firing in 03. Subsequent firings neck size.

You should start at 53 or 54 gr and go up in 1 grain increments.

IMR 4895 is one of the most versitile out there, for you applications. If I had to pick one, that would be it.

For .30-06 180 gr works great.

4895 slams

4350 slams a bit less

Stick with a spherical powder like WW760, H414 and H450, and you never have to weigh charges.:D

I like H414 & H4350 if I'm going to meter charges. IMR4350 is great if you want to weigh each charge.

I like 165b bullets best, but shoot 150s & 180s too.

IMR4895 & H4895 I use only for light bullets (125 or 110).

Powders I still want to try are:
RE22 - Nosler shows some screaming loads for 165g bullets.
H4831sc

PedalBiker,

RE22 is my powder for use with 190gr MatchKings. I can get an honest (and safe) 2900fps out of my 26" Krieger with it. Save your money in regards to H4831SC. I have tried and tried to make this powder work in both my .30-06 and 6.5x55, but cannot get within 100fps of a RE22 load.
