HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C — A man toting a 3-foot sword apparently met his match when he broke into his ex-girlfriend's apartment: The woman's roommate grabbed a sword of his own and sliced the intruder, police said.
The roommate, a sword collector, fended off the ex-boyfriend, who was cut on the arm, police said.
Elvis Javier Polanco, 18, was treated at a hospital and charged with burglary and aggravated assault, Beaufort County sheriff's Capt. Toby McSwain said. He said Polanco broke a window and climbed on his friend's shoulders to get into the apartment.
The roommate, Louis Delgado Hernandez, disarmed the intruder while the woman called police, McSwain said.

Sorry, if that's not serious enough for anyone... But cmon, the only thing that would have made it better is if they also had shields!:p

We have a set of swords in the basement on the entertainment center. Knockoffs of Samurai swords, there just for show because my son liked them; but I imagine they could stand up to a couple of slicing and dicing jobs if need be.
All the best,

I've got the Gen2 Maintz gladius on backorder right now.

It's short enough for use in an eclosed space, and is both a fine hacking and stabbing weapon. Though stabbing is probably the more effective attack, esp. when there are walls and stuff around you can get hung up on.

You know, the story is interesting, but the basic thread- sword for home defense- had been done pretty thoroughly...

OK, what are the odds here that a sword-wielding ex-boyfriend is going to enter the apartment only to encounter a sword-collector?
I'm thinking maybe this girl needs to stop picking up guys at RenFaires.

I've got a real deal saber with Japanese markings.(couldn't tell you much more about it then that) My kid brother swung it at me once a few years ago and I blocked it with one of those cheap decorator swords. It left a half inch deep gouge in the decorator sword, not a scratch on the real one.

I guess what they say is true... The Good Lord looks after fools and little children. I can't talk though, my brother and I did stupid things too.

Okay, it doesn't look like this is going anywhere. Anyone, feel free to start a thread about which techs to use in confined spaces (stabs/lunges/tsuki are indeed effective, and hard to stop).
