Latest update, national get together, dates and schedule

The firm dates are now May 25-27.

I've put together this schedule, let me know what you think.

Friday afternoon: Check in at competitors housing unit #2, which will be the base of operations.

Friday 6:00 pm: Social get together, chili cookoff, bring your favorite chili recipe to share, or something else for supper, we don't care what. Art also suggested a cookie contest, called a "cookie chill-off" ;)

Saturday: Breakfast on your own. Meet at unit #2. Hand out maps and range rules. Quick go-over of range rules.

We have reserved a trap field for all day Saturday. This allows for five shooters at a time. Dave McCracken and sm (provided they can make it) will be in charge of this event and will be assisted by range officers.

If you don't want to participate in the trap event, you are free to use any of the other open ranges, provided you have paid the NRAWC range fee or membership fee.

Saturday Lunch: Cold cuts, sandwiches, Sandy's Salsa.

Saturday 6:00 PM, Pot luck dinner, we can furnish BBQ pork or something,

Sunday: Breakfast on your own.

We have reserved the hunter pistol silhouette range for Sunday. There are 40 shooting positions and 400 targets ranging from 25 to 100 yards. All pistol calibers from 22lr up to and including magnums are allowed. No bottle neck cartridges. Please don't bring loads you think might damage the steel silhouettes. Actually, we have a lot more fun with 22lr here than anything else.

Again if you don't want to participate in the silhouette event, you are free to use any of the other open ranges, provided you have paid the NRAWC range fee or membership fee.

My friend Bud (Smoke Rizen) will give a demonstration on black powder cartridges and CAS with same if anybody is interested.

Justin will give a demonstration on Bullseye pistol shooting, again, if anyone is interested.

So far, the only range closed to public use that I know of is the Long Range Rifle Silhouette range. They have a blackpowder cartridge event that weekend, which would be fun to check out.

On the lunch part: We don't mind preparing and bringing lunch stuff for everybody, but we really don't want to pay for all of it, so IF you guys agree to those plans, we may pass the hat to help offset the costs.

------------------------------------------

Costs to expect:

NRAWC range fees: $15 per day per person or $35 annual family membership (I believe you can pay that online in advance). Note: you don't have to pay the NRAWC range fees if you only plan on participating in the trap and hunter pistol events, since we are paying separately for those ranges, but if you want to use the other ranges, it would be a good idea.

Housing: $23 per night or $44 double occupancy (camping is less).

Saturday shotgun event: $10 per person plus $3 per round (25 birds),

Sunday handgun event: $10 per person.

Insurance: Total $800 - figure $10-$20 per person.

-----------------------------

We have reserved competitors housing unit #2, but have already filled about 20 of the 28 beds there. I would suggest anyone not camping try and get into one of the other two competitors units, they are all within walking distance.

-----------------------------

Send a $50 check pre-entry check to:

BJR
PO BOX 720671
OKC, OK 73172-0671

This will allow us to know how many are coming. Excess funds, if any, will be refunded. Insurance is the first priority, after that, it can be applied to range fees etc. Make checks out to "BJR". Bratch can keep us posted as to who has committed.

------------------------------

I'm going to unstick the other two threads on this.

Suggestions welcome.

Great job.

So the later meals are potluck? I don't cook but I'm more than willing to buy tubs of potato or macaroni salad etc. or kick in funds to go to the purchase of same.

What provisions are there for firearms security? I don't know that I'll want to carry all mine with me every minute of the day.

Larry Ashcraft
March 4, 2007, 12:27 AM
Whoops. I didn't mention meals for the second day, did I? Same as for the first, I guess. Sandy and Mrs. Smoke Rizen are on meal detail. Sandy will post tomorrow on that. We don't mind preparing and hauling the bulk of the meals, but we may pass the hat to cover costs.

Firearms security has never been a problem. At night, what I don't haul into the rooms, I lock in the cab of the truck. Daytime, at the ranges, there should be no problem, unless we don't trust our own people.

March 4, 2007, 12:41 AM
It might not just be us out there. The people who are willing to pay all the money I trust, but this is an open forum and others reading this (who live nearby or are willing to drive) could see this as a chance to grab something.

As to passing the hat for food, I'll drop in $50. If that is not enough let me know.

Arkie
March 4, 2007, 12:47 AM
I'll be there and I'll also put money into the hat when it gets passed around.

There will be a hat?
Right? Don't use mine, there too small. LOL!!! :D

I'm hoping in April to have a decent idea of our funds and we can discuss how to use any extra we have after insurance, ranges and incidentals. I see three options:

1) Refund Excess
2) Buy Food
3) Buy Ammo/Clays

I'm open to ideas on this as well.

Larry Ashcraft
March 4, 2007, 01:01 PM
Warren, your concerns are justified. May I suggest all of us try to get to know each other right away and provide security for each other. That way, if some strange faces show up, we can deal with it as a group.

Also, large groups of people with expensive guns are pretty much the norm at WC, so its not like somebody can just drive through the gate and wander around. The NRA has their own security at the gate and patrolling around all the time. I just don't see it as a big problem.

Arkie, you mentioned bringing plastic bags and trash bags. That would be much appreciated.

Bratch, using the extra funds for food seems like the best idea. Refunds could be a huge headache.

Sandy and Annetta will be working on the menu today annd Sandy will post later. We also need to include items such as disposable plates, silverware and napkins. We can buy them in bulk at Sam's Club.

Arkie
March 4, 2007, 02:36 PM
I can do that. No problem.

Using the extra funds for food seems like a good idea to me also.

So just to verify; No organized rifle shooting at all?

Larry Ashcraft
March 5, 2007, 01:17 PM
Nothing organized. If there's enough interest, I suppose we could try to reserve the High Power range, but I would almost bet it will be in use. Besides, remember any range we reserve costs us $10 per shooter per day.

The Sight In range is available for those with centerfire rifles. It goes out to 200 yards I believe, and there are some animal silhouettes out to 500 or so. Of course, the Sight In range can't be reserved.

The new dates are not going to allow me to attend. Bummer!!

March 5, 2007, 03:50 PM
I can bring my CAS gear as well and help with the Cowboy Action stuff.

I can give a ride down for peeps as well, first couple to mail me can go with me. I have a pickup and can carry a bit of gear. I will be coming from Longmont CO.

Also, when and where do we send cash, etc. and I can bring food, BBQs etc, if needed.

I am still hoping to make it, but I still don't know if my schedule will allow that to happen. Should I just show up, is that kosher?

Zak Smith
March 5, 2007, 11:39 PM
Hi guys,

With this date change, I can make it.

I'd be happy to run a long-range rifle and/or 3Gun area, depending on what people want. If we can find an appropriate spot, I can set up some steel targets for LR rifle shooting and have some demo rifles available. Anyone interested in either of those ideas?

I'm confused... so we don't really have a range except shotgun on saturday?

Did I read that right?

Larry Ashcraft
March 6, 2007, 01:01 PM
Did I read that right?
Saturday - shotgun at the trap range.

Sunday - Hunter Pistol Silhouette Range.

Plus: whatever Zak sets up.

Sandy Ashcraft
March 10, 2007, 08:24 PM
O.K. Here are my ideas.

Fri May 25, 2007 6:00pm
Chili cook off.
Bring your favorite chili or whatever you think goes with chili.
Cookie chill-off
Art and Smoke Rizen have already volunteered to be judges.

Sat May 26, 2007
Breakfast - On your own.
The competitors housing has small kitchens with coffee pots and small refrigerators, but no other cooking utensils.

Lunch: Sandwiches - Pot Luck. Bring whatever you want. Just more time to get to know each other.
Chips and Sandy's Salsa

Dinner: Pot Luck Dinner.
We will bring Ham and Potatoes.

Sun May 27, 2007
Breakfast - Again on your own.

Lunch: Since most people will have to check out early to go home. We will have sandwiches again. And maybe any leftovers we have.

If you have any other ideas please let us know.

Please call anybody you know to see if they are coming. The more the merrier.

March 11, 2007, 07:41 PM
so Zak, do you have a range we can use for 3-gun?

sumpnz
March 11, 2007, 11:39 PM
For whoever is keeping track, I can no longer make it. We are in the process of relocating from AZ to WA. Even it was the other way around I kinda doubt I'd have the time since as I'm sure most of you know, picking up and moving is a horrendous experience and takes a lot of time and energy. Especially once you have kids. And that is with the company paying for most aspects.

I'm getting set to do the insurance. Unless I hear a bunch of squalls by late on 3/18, the name of our Club is:

Molon Labe Shooting Club.

We have 43 NRA folks; 33 not-yet-NRA. That meets the requirements of 50% NRA members to have the insurance. (I'd like to see 100%, natch.)

Provide Larry with your real-world name, address and cigarette ration card #.

Ya don't wanna show up and say you're Xerxes-from-THR and get a blank look and a very intelligent, "Huh?"

Zak Smith
May 1, 2007, 05:28 PM
For a long-range rifle demonstration area, we are cleared to use the Cooper range. We also can use the 1000 yards range in the evenings IF the 50BMG guys are done with it.

Larry Ashcraft
May 3, 2007, 11:42 PM
Neither Dave McCracken or sm will be attending. :( I guess I'm cancelling the trap field, unless a bunch of you want to do shotgun stuff.

In fact, I'm thinking of cancelling the range reservations altogether, so we don't have to worry about the insurance. We'll still have the get together with whoever shows up, and we'll just use the available ranges as we always have.

We're going to have fun though!

Sandy Ashcraft
May 3, 2007, 11:49 PM
We still have 3 rooms open in our competitor house. Is there anyone else that would like to stay with us?
One person $26 per night
Two people $44 per night.

I am going to cancel the extra rooms next week. So please let me know if you are coming and want to stay with us.

Arkie
May 4, 2007, 12:02 AM
Well I'm still coming up there!

I've got my room already reserved too.

Well I am seriously considering. If anyone from Utah or Colorado needs a ride see my post Utah carpool (http://www.thehighroad.org/showpost.php?p=3388192&postcount=9)

I will probably bring my 12 year old son who loves trap and I will bring guns for 3-Gun and Cowboy Action to join Dravur and Zak.

I hope everyone has a good time. I wish I could be there. As it worked out I would have had to cancel at the last minute anyway - I need to have my father at UVA Hospital for thyroid surgery bright and early on the 25th.

Ain't the 'Net great? :p

I spoke with Larry just a little bit ago, and Larry and Sandy have arrived.
Art and his better half Art will like that comment, you wait and seeare there as well.

So far so good. Sandy was given keys to all the rooms in anticipation of everyone else arriving - except - the keys to Larry & Sandy's room. :p

Cellphone is reception is sorta "drifty" Larry and I kept getting cut off...still the weather was nice and the scenery "breathtaking".

Y'all have fun, be safe.

I predict Sandy and Art's wife will get into and cause a lot of mischief.
Just mark my words and wait and see...

I'll be in touch with Larry & Sandy later on, and post any updates.

Somebody has to keep Larry out of trouble, that boy I swear! :)

Larry called and "hey, we only have 10 deer out on the parking lot, just moseying around in front of us".

I spoke to Art as well.

Weather seems to change "in a hurry" and once this afternoon while on the porch, storm blew through with hail.

Folks are having a "heck of a good time, be sure to post that" Larry shared.
Chili, cold beer, porch sitting, swapping stories and meeting everyone.

Something about shooting "Ell and Pee" targets tomorrow, not sure what exactly these targets are Art was talking about. ;)

Sandy and Art's wife are not behavin'

"You boys get in here, we have plans and stuff for you guys to do" - Sandy in the background.
