I've heard some talk of fit and I think I understand what it is, but I'm wondering if there's anyway to get a "feel" for whether a gun fits me by myself. What sort of things should I look -- or feel -- for?

The quick check....

With a shotgun KNOWN TO BE EMPTY, stand in a ready position and focus on some point in the room or in the distance. Close your eyes,mount the shotgun, and open your eyes. The barrel will be pointing where you were looking IF the fit is good.

Use a patterning board to check POI/POA.

And,the mount with a properly fitted shotgun should be comfortable with no strain felt.
