Mod to Springer MilSpec

The last scab finally healed over where my Springer kept biting me last fall. With all the rain and snow our range has been under water for about 3 weeks. So I took the time to swap out the stock hammer with an MC Commander style hammer. With very minor honing it fit perfectly.

To the point: The trigger now seems to have more "take-up slop" in it than with the original hammer. Do I now need to replace the trigger and/or sear?

Thanks in advance for sharing your knowledge....

No, take up is take up, and you need at least .030".

Did you just put the hammer in? If you haven't shot it yet do so for a while with only one or two rounds in the magazines, a full auto event could be around the corner and you need to make sure the hammer and sear is working right.

What exactly did you hone? Did you use the McCormick hammer? If so did you use the sear as well?

Is it "take up slop", or is it the creep that comes after the normal take up?

The creep can be eliminated by properly matching the sear to the hammer hooks, provided you have nice square hooks that aren't too tall. I had the same problem, took some work to fix it, but it's a million percent better now.

It's also dangerous if you don't understand what you're doing, and if you botch the job without knowing it. Be carefull!

Thanks for the input.:)

HSMITH, I have just over .030" now. I guess I should have checked the take-up with the old trigger before I started. The trigger is a Master Class brand bought from Gil Hebbard Guns. I have done business with him for years. BUT this is my first attempt at any project that isn't cosmetic.

I filed, then honed about .010" from the top of the hammer. It was not allowing the slide to travel all the way back. Not enough clearance between the slide and the top of the grip safety for the Commander style hammer.

I don't notice any creep, but I haven't had a chance to get to the range yet because of the standing water. If we don't get any rain this week I'll get there by the 15th.

Is your grip safety a standard GI type or ...? When using a Commander hammer with a standard GS, you normally dish out the top of the GS for clearance. Bill Wilson was one of the first to do this as a part of one of his package guns back in the early days of IPSC, although I'm sure others did it, too. Just food for thought.

BBBBill, Thanks for the info. My GS is the standard type that comes with a Springfield MilSpec. My hammer work "seems" to have solved the clearance situation. BUT if I experience any problems at the range, I will keep this in mind.

Update after getting out to the range Sunday 3/20/2007.

Hammer change and fitting work accomplished my goal, eliminating "hammer bite" without affecting performance. While reassembling, I also filed a small burr from the ejector. This resulted in a nice neat little pile of casings at 2 o'clock.

All in all, I am very happy with my first 'smithing attempt. Thanks for everyone's help.
