Hey folks - I'm interested in hunting rats with my .22 (using subsonics) or my pellet gun. At my place they have nests in the woods about every 50' - 100' for acres and acres.

I've been inspired by rat-hunter.com: Check out this pic:

I'm thinking that a nightvision scope would be pretty effective, then I could have my light off and not scare them away as much. But that sounds expensive. I have a cheapo laser that holds its zero pretty well, and a fairly bright headlamp flashlight. I just can't imagine finding rats in the woods at night with a flashlight unless I go knocking over their nests... which is kind of hard to do with a gun in your hands.

Any recommendations for on the cheap gear for night time rat huntin?

Thanks

I don’t know if this is legal, but why not use bait. Also, some animals cannot tell the difference between no light and red light. If rats are one of these animals, then you could mount a red light over a piece of wood or something with some peanut butter smeared on it. When they come in for a little PB, wammo, you got them.
