SPRING HILL - At first, Raymond Kolomick couldn't remember how a bullet had blown off one of his fingers and lodged in his kneecap.
Kolomick's girlfriend said they were moving boxes in the garage when a pistol in one of the boxes must have accidentally discharged.
Later, Kolomick, 43, told Deputy Cody Silagyi that he was playing with an antique .45-caliber pistol on his back porch Tuesday night when it accidentally discharged.
But, that was after his girlfriend, Sandra Moore, 35, told the deputy that she had remembered Kolomick was taking the pistol out of a box when it suddenly fired.
Doctors at Spring Hill Regional Hospital said the injuries weren't consistent with the way Kolomick told medical personnel how he had been shot, the deputy was told.
Moore and Kolomick agreed that he had been drinking heavily before the shooting occurred at his home at 8539 Vicksburg Road, Spring Hill. They insisted there had been no argument during which a pistol might have been involved.
This was confirmed by Kolomick's 16-year-old son, John, who said he was in the house and, although he didn't see the shooting happen, he didn't believe his father and Moore were arguing.
County records indicate that Kolomick has a violent temper. Last year, he was accused by a different girlfriend of repeated violence and subsequent violation of a court order that prohibited him from having any violent contact with the woman.
Doctors removed a shotgun slug from Kolomick's knee. It had left a one-inch wide hole in the skin on his left knee. Deputy Silagyi said the tip of the ring finger on Kolomick's left hand was connected only by skin. Bone, muscle and tissue had been blown away.
Deputies found an antique pistol with a spent .410-guage shotgun shell in the chamber inside the glove compartment of Kolomick's car that was parked at the hospital. Silagyi said the hammer was down on the cartridge and its primer cap had been hit by the hammer.
Deputies are still investigating the incident
