Picked up a "new" performance center 627, of course, after I got it home, noticed the rear sight is way bent. I don't know how I missed that in the store, guess I was so busy checking out the timing, and lockup that I didn't look at the obvious. Anyway, guess I'll call smith, hopefully they will send a new one without jumping through a bunch of hoops.. The blade wiggles around too, I suspect this gun has been dropped on it's sight. This is why when I buy a gun, I usually like to get one thats "new in box" and hasn't been out in the counter where 50 million people have handled it.

They had another 627 in the couter, but the cylinder on the one I bought locks up much tighter so I went with the bent sight model. Anything else I should look for on a gun thats probably been dropped? I don't see any other marks on the gun anywhere, I suspect it's totally fine other than the need for a new rear sight.

Ummmm...well, what exactly is bent? IS it the sight, or is it perhaps the screws holding the sight to the frame, or worst of all, the screwholes in the topstrap are boogered?

If it's the screws, it's maybe a quick fix back at the gun store.

It's the actual sight thats bent, the metal strap. Nothing wrong with the gun as far as I can tell there, because I took the sight off my 625 and put it right on to the 627 with no problems and it's straight. The blade on this sight is all loose too , the whole thing needs replacing. I could just spend $50 on a millet.

The best fix would be for the dealer to give me the sight off the other 627 he has, and he can order a new one from smith, but not sure how agreeable he will be to that plan. I doubt smith would give me too hard a time, I can fax them a receipt showing it was bought new yesterday.

Don't bother the dealer and call the 1-800 customer service number. Problem goes away!

I don't know what you paid for the gun, and it doesn't matter. But I suspect you can replace the sight for less then the difference between the revolver you got and a new one.

Used guns often offer excellet buys, but do check things out carefully.

Oh this gun was new, thats 1/2 the issue here.. Seems them hammer is bent too :( Calling smith tomorrow, it's going back and they are going to make it right.

They should treat you well. I've delt with S&W a few times and have nothing but praise for them.

So I called smith this morning, they didn't give me any hassle. They are sending a pre-paid fed-ex label right to my house so I can ship the gun to them. At first he said I should try bringing the gun back to the store I bought it at, but I said I'd rather just ship it back, because they were going to end up getting the gun either way. The store might have swapped it for the other 627 they had in the case, but that one had a much looser cylinder on lock-up for some reason, so I'd rather just get this one fixed.

You are better off sending it back. They will go through the whole gun for you. Turn around time is pretty fast too.

Wow, hammer and sight bent!

I remember in the store I worked at a couple Ruger sights on the (then) new target 22 coming in bent, but nothing like that Smith.

Think about this; if it fell once, say primarily on the hammer, how did the sight get bent, and vica versa? You think it took a blow, bounced, and took anther? Wild. Then whoever dropped it put it back in the box...

Can't tell if the hammer is actually bent, but it's rubbing on something.. It should ship out tomorrow, and I'll post a follow up when I get it back.

Well, I have a good follow up to this post.
Shipped the gun to S&W on a Thursday, they received it Friday. I got it back Wednesday the following week, so they only had it 2-3 days, can't ask for a better turn around than that.

Anyway, they replaced the hammer, and the rear sight. I asked them to smooth out the action too, figured it never hurts to ask right? Anyway, it did come back with one of the smoothest actions of any stock smith wheelgun I've ever picked up. Don't know if this gun was just good to start with minus the bent hammer, or if they actually did something, but I let another ICORE wheelgun fan dry fire it and he was like "It came back from the factory this smooth?"

I have to give Smith and Wesson service a thumbs up. The gun seems perfect now.
