Reason why to wear a hat at the indoor range

As it seems to happen everytime I go to an indoor range....I end up with wounds. the range is a bit warm for my big boned self so pushing the safety glasses up tight ends up fogging them up...so I leave them a bit loose. And I forgot my hat, yet again. Dont think of such things when the sun isnt in your eyes. But never fails I endup with one of these....
My gun throws the shell exactly back at the deviding boards, and then showers me with the brass. Unless I stick my arms way out in the lanes it seems that it always happens. Argh....atleast now I get to have a good story to tell all the anti gun folks around me from time to time.

OUCH! That's the worst one I have ever seen! My only problem has been shells falling down my shirt and burning me - but nothing ever that bad!
Take care of yourself! (Would a hat have prevented that?)

You can get an antifog spray for your glasses at you local CVS or other drugstore. Keeping them really clean helps a bunch too.
And shirts with stand up collars and baseball style caps aren't just cause we all look so cool in them.:D
But I beleve you already know that!
That is quite an ouchy you got there. I've been smacked pretty hard with bullet fragments coming off steel plate targets that did much less damage than that.

Bowl, cheap lesson about always wearing a hat. Now tell others.

LOL i hear ya. Actualy its not that bad ... its where out of instinct when you wake up or when you get something in your eye, to rub it. Well its so close to my eye that my hands hit it, making it loosen up and bleed or such. Doesnt hurt now. But man friday night she was a burning.
A hat would have stoped it as i can pull the bill down to the glasses. I never have to worry about such things outside, where I shoot normaly, but at ASP my gun tends to fling them right back at me.
And one thing...the high point carbine never seemed to do this :D shows you how much thought they put into it ... :neener: Actualy behind Dave's Benillie shotgun shooting 3 1/2" mags the carbine was the cool fun gun of the night probaly. Everyone there was like....whoa what is that....if they weren't directly related to us all.

And shirts with stand up collars
Or at least shirts that don't have a collar which hangs loosely and one that is not tucked in.

That's also the reason why you warn female beginners not to wear open blouses when shooting. One of those below the neckline would = female who never wants to shoot again.:(

My sister & I went to the range last Sat. for our "girly outing" (my sons say-"the girls from hell). Anyway, I warm up with my Ruger 22/45 always. A couple of times before, I've had spent shells tumble into the front of my shirt, and once I had a little burn mark where one went into my bra.
Last week was bizarre. A spent shell went down the back of my shirt...all the way down into my pants. I've lost some weight and the waist band doesn't fit tght. I was jumping around like a wild thing trying to get that heat out of my britches! That would have been an opportunity for someone with a video camera.

Yes indeed you should.
But your own personal safety is not the main reason.;)

You know, a hat will help, but not as much a proper fitting and properly protecting eyewear is worn. Even with hats, cases sometimes eject to the face, passing under the bill and gaining entry behind the glasses.

Ouch hawk0484 that's rough! During a pistol course once I managed to send a case down the pants of my instructor. I started laughing so hard we almost had to restart. He was wearing bibs and it went down the front of them!

Tight-collared t-shirt or sweatshirt, season dependent, untucked, hat and glasses.
forgot hat ONCE, with tucked-in v-neck t-shirt. Freshly emptied .45ACP brass went down my shirt, while doing the hot stuff! dance, I pulled shirt away just enough for said brass to fall down inside pants........

OUCH! I started wearing a hat when an ejected case lodged itself between my glasses & me at the bridge of my nose... Very easy to wear & prevent alot of potential problems.

It really isnt that bad....looks nasty tho from tiem to time :)
Work has been interesting tho. Having to explain to everyone why its there. Luckly no one here is very anti....most just keep quiet either for or agains.
It does make scracthing the eye a lot more painful...as it gets hit everytime i touch my eye it seems.

I was in the lane next to you - thanks for letting me shoot that carbine.
Wow...kinda makes me feel bad for laughing about it in the shop, but since you say its not that bad - I wont have trouble sleeping.
Reminds me of Ralphy's mom in the movie 'Christmas Story' - dont shoot your eye out.
Hope to see you there again,
John

yeah I did the hot shell dance once. My dad laughed harder then I did. I laughed once it came out cause I knew I probably looked funny. (I'm pretty sure it was his G19 that I was shooting.) It was a normal T-shirt with a pretty high collar, so I was surprised it found its way in. I almost never tuck my shirts in so it fell out as soon as it dislodged itself from my bra. I'm just glad it didn't burn me.

Ah dont worry about laughing John. I think its rather funny as well. I need to learn to bring the hat with me. But as i dont shoot inside but once in a blue moon its usualy not a problem. And for the most part the days we shoot its not sunny.
Only other hot shell I got was my friend with a matching sw99 sent one down my shirt once...that is fun

I have been dinged many times by hot brass in an indoor range (including my own basement). I wear a hat, but still get dinged. It is amazing the randomness of that cartridge sometimes.
The little Jetfire I have seems to be the worst. That little blow back sucker seems to throw that peewee .25 brass right in my face.
Revolvers do solve that problem for sure.

Bowlcut,
I see you've pick up some nice color to the shiner. The carbine was a cool shooter though. A bit of advice. Don't pick it when it scabs over :D .
btw, the shoulder still hurts. But it's a good hurt :D . (3 1/2 " out of a 7lb gun. What was I thinking.... - I went back Sunday for some more ):what:
