If you've bought or shot the new SW99 in 45ACP, please let us know what you think of this new pistol in that caliber. How does it compare to it's peer competition? Would this be a good production class gun? Thanks,

Mark

I posted a range report on the SW99 .45 that I had recently. I'll just quickly run down the list of problems I had:

The trigger was the worst part of all. As you probably know, the SW99 trigger is staged and after the staging point, just before the pistol would fire, there was a very rough/gritty portion of the trigger pull which really made the squeeze seem long and very difficult. This manifested itself, for me, in very poor grouping even at short ranges (I'm talking 6" to 7" groups at 25 yds).

I also had trouble with the factory mags. Sometimes they wouldn't drop free and sometimes the slide wouldn't lock back on an empty mag.

Reliability was questionable for me, too. In the first 200 rounds I had three failures (FTF, FTE). I put about 400 rounds through the pistol all told. I realize this isn't a very good testing of the gun nor a good "break in" for it but with the trigger, the mags, and the reliability issues I returned to the gun store.

Incidentally, when the gun shop owner felt the trigger he advised me to return it to S&W for warranty work. We also tried the triggers on a .40 and a 9mm SW99. One of the two, I can't remember which (think it was the 9mm), had just as awful a trigger as the .45 whereas the other pistol's trigger was nice and smooth. I declined the warranty work and used the SW99 as a trade in.

I won't badmouth the gun but I would certainly recommend shooting one before you buy it, it at all possible.
