With the recent upsurge of ammo prices everywhere, I have noticed that plain vanilla .357 FMJ Winchester @ Wal-Mart is about $18 for a box of 50. I used to buy the JHP version @ Academy for about the same price, there's no telling how much that costs now :uhoh: . Who makes cheap target ammo in this caliber? And no, I don't reload :scrutiny: .

I have used the Georgia arms "canned heat" and had good results with it. It comes in GI ammo cans, which is nice.

The guys on SIGForum.com are all using Lancer ammo - another brand of quality commercial reloads.

If the idea of using commercial reloads freaks you out, you can look around online for bulk deals on Federal American Eagle or Sellier and Bellot - also reasonably priced range ammo. Natchezss.com and Ammoman.com are two good sources online for bulk ammo through the mail.

I believe shipping is free for purchases over $500-$1000 depending on locale.

I just had a poor experience with Sellier & Bellot in .357 SIG. I bought a box of FMJ to try out my new P239, and I had 10 jams in the first 15 rounds.

I've got some Winchester JHP that I didn't bring with me to the range. I'll try it out next just to make sure it isn't my gun.

But jeez ... it's a Sig !

I get differences in costs among retailers for using UPS ground. It depends on the weight of your ammo order and your zip code. I keep that in mind when I see an ammo sale from a retailer several or more states away. Some retailers have a handling charge and add insurance. For example, Natchez adds $3.99 plus insurance to ammo orders. If you ask for just the cost of the shipment, you might just get the cost of UPS ground shipping and then get surprised when the cost of shipping is higher because the order-taker didn't include the cost of Natchez handling fee and the insurance. If you ask for all charges, the order-taker will tell you.

I guess the point of all this is know what the total cost of shipping is as well as the cost of the ammo when you shop around.

Another problem is whether the retailer actually has the ammo on the shelf. Mirage Technologies prices its ammo competively, but must pass on price increases for backordered ammo, which can occur while it awaits delivery from a manufacturer. I am unsure whether it charges your credit card or not for backordered ammo. I need to check. If you don't want to wait for an indefinite time, you might want to think about going elsewhere. I noticed this happened with Speer Lawman .357 SIG ammo.

Ammoman seems to have a limited selection, but what you see is what you pay for and what Ammoman actually has in its inventory. Shipping is included in the listed price. Ammoman seems to be a little higher in cost than Mirage Technologies even when shipping is figured. I figure cost per round after I factor in shipping, insurance, and handling fees when I compare retail prices for ammo.

A little update on my problem with the Sellier & Bellot. The problem appears to be with the extractor on my pistol, and not the fault of the ammo.
