My 229 is a .40. I do not find the recoil to be an issue with any of the grips that I have had on this pistol - these include the factory plastic ones, Hogue rubber finger-groove, Hogue Rosewood, and the Nill's.

The reason that the width was an issue for me was that for CCW it is better to have a slimmer profile gun - adding another 1/4 inch to an already thick double-stack pistol was beginning to press the envelope in size, in my opinion.

I also have a Bar-Sto 9mm conversion barrel for this pistol - the recoil does not seem to be as "snappy" with the 9mm - but it is not that big of a difference.

I have also replaced the mainspring in this pistol with a Wolff 18# - it does make a noticeable difference!

Upon seeing 007's blue P232 with these grips, I just had to see what they did for a Rainbow Titanium. Here it is.

I hate to say it, but I am VERY unimpressed with my Sig Mosquito. The first 3 mags went through fine, but after that it was just jam city. Tried a few different types of ammo, and it only seemed to make it worse. I tried cleaning some of the factory grease out and that seemed to help for maybe 1 mag, then it just started jamming again...this time I couldn't fix it.

Anyone have any advice? I'm not happy at all that I spent $370 on a pistol that jams constantly.

Field strip it and completely clean out the factory goo, lube it up with a little TW-25B (hopefully you got some with it, if not some other lubricating grease) and put a very light bead of oil on top of that. Cycle it by hand, wipe the excess off. Then load it with mini-mag and see if the problem disappears.

Introduction, Why Did I Go DAK?, Et al.

(Feel free to skip this part…)

I’ve been shooting my whole life (+30 years) and I’ve never learned to shoot double action. That's right... Never. Nada. Absolutely no double action experience to speak of whatsoever. I have double-action revolvers but my first experience with DA pistol was a Beretta 96 that I couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn with. That was a good ten years ago and at some point I decided it was time to correct what I felt was a deficiency in my shooting skills. It just felt like something I should know how to do. I’m new to Sig pistols (this 229 is my first) and I felt as though it would provide the perfect platform to learn on. I did a lot of reading on the DAK trigger system, but my local range doesn’t carry any for rental so trying one out before taking the plunge was not going to be possible. I read, I queried other forum members (a big thanks in particular to Ed45 at Sig Forums) and then I read some more. I decided at some point that this was the way to go. Having heard over and over again how smooth the trigger pull is was one factor. I considered that my that my 1911’s trigger breaks a shot at 3.5 pounds on the dot single-action and that the DAK trigger broke a double-action shot at only a few pounds more. That didn’t seem like a whole lot. If the trigger pull really was as glassy as I was hearing it was, I felt confident the DAK was something I could manage. A full DA shot only a few pounds heavier than my 1911? “Yeah,” I was thinking, “I could handle that, even with the long pull of the trigger.” So, with thoughts such as those going through my head, my new 229, with barely five-hundred rounds digested, was on its way back to Exeter for a DAK conversion. I was also having problems with the slide-lock lever and requested that be taken care of (more on this later). Sig held to their ten-day turn around and before I had chance to miss it too much, my 229 was back in my hand’s.

Initial Inspection, Dry Firing the DAK, First Impressions

My Sig came back to me looking good. It was lightly lubed and the exterior was clean. Everything looked and felt tight. So far so good. I noticed immediately the hammer was bobbed and that the decocker was, of course, absent now. I remember thinking I’ll need to change grips now since the Hogue rubber grips looks a little odd with the cutout for the decocker switch. I’ve been meaning to switch to Sig factory hard plastic panels anyway. So anyway, I check to make sure the gun is clear and head out to the yard for some dry fire. I’m admittedly a little apprehensive at this point.

I dry fire a few shots and if ever you’ve doubted that the DAK trigger is as icy smooth as you may have read, hear me now when I tell you: the DAK on my 229 slides like an ice cube over a sheet of window glass. I’m talking smooth as a baby’s butt. Wow it’s smooth. Is it a long pull? Well yes and no. Sure it’s a lot longer than the SA pull on my 1911 but at least to me, it didn’t feel as long as what I was expecting. In fact the very first dry fire shot broke so fast I was a little surprised. I pulled it again and was still surprised. I guess I was expecting it to be a looooooooong pull and what I got was a long…er pull. It was a rather pleasant surprise really. As was the clean break. I always thought the “stock” DA/SA trigger pull on my 229 felt, well, just okay. “Crisp”? “Clean”? “Glass Rod”? These were not words that jumped to my mind when thinking about the stock trigger and it's SA trigger pull. The one word that did spring to mind was “spongy”. Maybe it was just my 229 but the trigger, while good, was anything but excellent out of the box. The DAK trigger, on the other hand, was superb... Beyond superb even. My confidence was growing and my apprehension fading. It’s hard to describe the exact feeling of the DAK, but it was good. Very, very good. And this from a guy who has never shot anything double-action before. Nothing. I avoided them in fact. Glocks, HK’s, Smiths, you name it. It was a DAO pistol I hid from it. Now I felt foolish for having done so. I was shooting DA and I was smiling.

Real, Ultimate, Power: The DAK Range Report

For the curious… What gets removed/replaced when converting to DAK:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v149/Baphomet/SA002.jpg
Freakin' open heart surgery!

I got to my local indoor range and found they were selling Mag Tech 180 grain FMJ’s. Now, I’m under the impression my 229 prefers 165 grain loads (Sellier and Bellot 165’s are "magic bullets") but Mag Tech 180’s are what’s being sold, so that’s what I’m shooting. I stuff my mags take aim and let loose. I’ve been told that the DAK will feel a little different when shooting live ammo than it does when being dry fired, so I’m not that surprised when in fact it does. It feels just slightly better. I can’t say how exactly, but it does. Okay, so some targets follow. These are my first fifteen rounds with the DAK trigger and really, the first fifteen rounds I've fired in DA mode. The range is seven yards:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v149/Baphomet/15Rds.jpg

OMG!! I’m hitting paper! This is exciting! The vertical stringing, obviously, is due to the difficulty I’m having in maintaining a proper sight picture with that long DA pull. Okay, so I’m no Grand Master class shooter, I grant you that. But for me, just keeping the shots on paper, even at seven yards is exciting. This whole DA thing is starting to seem really doable.

Okay… Moving the target out to (a more respectable) ten yards I quickly discover the DAK trigger is a harsh, unforgiving mistress. Treat it right and it’s a real joy; slip up though, even a little, and it spanks you like a baaaad, bad, boy (apologies to the ladies reading this, but you'll have to come up with your own analogy here). When I did my part, I was punching holes dead center. A moment’s loss of concentration and the shot revealed my error plainly. I’ve never been able to see my errors before, but when shooting the DAK I could tell you exactly where the shots were landing, good or bad. I could literally see the sights being pulled off center as the shot broke. The following two targets are not my best of the day, nor my worst. I chose these two because they best exemplified my average for this session:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v149/Baphomet/5Rds.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v149/Baphomet/5Rds-1.jpg

Proper placement of my finger on the trigger has always been key for me shooting accurately with my Sig. With my 1911 I can get away with a little less attention to this particular detail, but not so here. I found my inclination was to have too much of my finger on the trigger. It felt better, like I was better able to grip the trigger for that long pull, but in practice, I found I needed to back it out and off the trigger. See those shots that I pulled to the right? For me, that’s indicative of too MUCH finger on the trigger (yes, I’m right-handed). I know that goes against conventional wisdom but I’ve proven it to myself over the years and it’s the same with any pistol I shoot; too much finger on the trigger and I pull my shot’s to the right. Once I learned that I don’t NEED that much finger on the trigger, my groups tighten up. The light pull of the DAK allows me to use the center of the pad of my index finger just fine. Wanting to use the crook of the first joint is something I need to consciously keep myself from doing. The other thing I find is that the DAK likes a single, fairly rapid pull straight through from start to finish. I tried “staging” the pull and that’s no good for me. I needed to line up the sights and commit to the shot and pull it off -- or stop altogether. Staging the DAK trigger was, for me, a recipe for fliers.

Conclusions…

The DAK trigger is the DA trigger I’ve been looking for. It’s taking some getting used to but after todays shooting, I’m sold – one hundred and ten percent. There's not a single thing about the DAK I can find NOT to like.

I have been told that by replacing the factory stock hammer-spring with a Wolff #18 hammer-spring that the DAK trigger pull is improved immensely. I have one such spring, and I intend to find out just exactly what, if any improvement I find by using it in place of the factory spring. Stay tuned for a follow up using the #18 Wolff spring.

*** REAL, ULTIMATE DAK RANGE REPORT -- PART II ***

I did indeed swap out the stock hammer-spring (#24) for an #18 Wolff spring. With a little assistance from another Sig-user I decided to install the spring myself instead of being a spineless panty-waist and taking it to my local 'Smith for installation. Good thing too, or I would missed the opportunity to bleed like a stuck pig all over my new Sig when my hand slipped and I gashed a knuckle. Amid the ensuing carnage and cursing, however, the hammer strut and the new spring somehow managed to install themselves and shortly thereafter, though woozy from blood loss, I managed to drive to my local shooting range to see how this new setup felt.

Dry firing indicated that the new hammer spring was in fact helping lighten the pull a good amount: I was mildly impressed. But to me the DAK doesn't feel quite the same during dry firing as it does when using live ammo, so I was eager to find out how things felt when actually shooting.

In short, the #18 hammer spring makes a world of difference. I found it much easier to keep the sight picture aligned from start to finish, less perceived snap and just flat out felt better. It's hard to explain exactly but the pull is very different and in a good way. If you've ever had one of those Zen Moments when everything felt like it just fell into place and happened almost without any conscious control... THAT is what this trigger feels like. You start the pull, feel the DAK's normal, smooth resistance, but then suddenly the trigger just seems to collapse... and the shot breaks. It was surprising to say the least. It became much less a mental exercise of concentrating on my front sight, and much more of one of simply letting the shot happen. It's a difficult thing to explain, but when I could do that, the shot would drill the X-ring. Every... Single... Time. When I faltered, when I pushed things or over-thought the process of what I was doing, that's when the shot pulled off center, and usually pretty dramatically.

Inspecting my empties, I found good, solid looking primer strikes on every case I examined. In shooting 100 rounds I had zero misfires using WWB .40 caliber, 180 grain, FMJ's.

Shooting at 7 yards (and oddly a bit faster than normal) produced surprisingly good targets for me. Bear in mind I'm not only new to the DAK trigger, this is my first DA shooting... EVER... in my life. A complete and total DA n00b here.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v149/Baphomet/DAK001.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v149/Baphomet/DAK002.jpg

I intend to put this spring to a stricter test in coming weeks - firing a couple boxes of CCI ammo - since as I understand it, CCI loads typically have the hardest primers around. In looking at the empty shells from the WWB that was fired, I don't expect there to be any problem.

I can say without any doubt in my mind that the switch to the #18 Wolf hammer-spring provided a dramatic improvement in the trigger pull on my DAK. It was good - really, really good before - but the new spring transforms it into something else again. I now have the DA trigger I've always been looking for and didn't know existed.

*** One Week Later ***

Today, just as a test and by request, I ran three boxes of CCI Blazer through my 229 (since CCI primers are supposed to be some of the hardest around) and all 150 rounds fired on the first pull. No hang-fires, no misfires; just one bang after the next. I was told if I got consistent ignition using CCI ammo, I could rest assured no other primer would a problem.

So there you have it. End of report. I hope someone finds this information helpful!

Excellent DAK Report Baphomet! And timely. I was fondling a P229 DAK yesterday, and I was really surprised by the trigger (in dry fire). It was quite smooth. Reminded me of my Kahr PM9; a little longish, but smooth as butter.

I like the Kahr's trigger, no stacking, just a clean smooth break. I shoot it very well. I suspect I'd shoot the DAK well, too.

I've been staying away from them because I wanted to keep all my SIGs the same (DA/SA in my case). But maybe that's no big deal, as I can switch between the PM9 and P239 just fine in one range session.

I'm considering a P229 or P239 in 357SIG, maybe I'll grab a DAK.

Nice Elite TX50Cal, I really like those.

That's a lot of 226's! Why so many?

I have the pitted slide for carry, one for range time, one that is a 1988 new in box that I found at a gun show for a backup gun, and the Navy because it's a Navy. The 9mm is my favorite round and next is .45, the .357 and .40 are not used much they are more for the collection. I still need to get the rest of the P-series.

Do you like your Mosquitos?

Yes, I like the Mosquitos. The first one I had the safety came off during range time and was not noticed until it was too late. (.22s get used hard at the range by my wife, friends and myself.) The safety screw came out and the right side was lost. The left side came loose and then the slide broke!:cuss: Lesson learned to watch more closely. Gun returned to Sig in hopes of repair. They sent a whole new gun.:) The new one has not had the safety come loose and works great. It was so much fun I bought the 2 tone to go with it, which has also given me no problems. Both were broken in with 500rds each CCI mini mags and then fed the Remington golden bullets.

Nice. Your 226's multiplied like my 1911's. My wife asked about that one day... And I remarked: "it's like purses, honey." She hasn't asked again, and needed no more clarification.

Your clarification, of course, was more thorough :)

Thanks for the thoughts on the Mosquito. They seem to be knocked on some forums. I like the package, what's not to like, really, about a gun that handles like your carry gun but costs very little to shoot? I found a Mosquito w/SIG red dot for a good price and have been considering it... But the famous fickle ammo tastes have somewhat shied me away.

My P239 is going back to SIG for a checkup. I've been noticing some odd rail wear since new, and it doesn't look terribly normal to me. I see two things: some areas where the anodizing seems to have chipped off, and a long area of wear through the anodizing to the bare metal. Of course rails wear a bit, but this is a LOT of wear for 1k rounds. SIG customer service agreed, and wants to look at it. Here's a photo of one side.

9mm, blindref.

I also prefer to see my used guns in person. I wasn't planning on buying that P228 when I did, but I did tell myself if I ever came across a good one for a fair price that I'd snap it up. It happened a little more quickly than I thought, but... It was a good choice. Can't wait to get it back from the mothership.

I've seen a few P225's lately, only one that was decent. It's a nice little gun, but since I have a P239 it's not really expanding my choices much. I did like the grip shape a tad better, and it was a little better balanced. But the P239 shoots very nicely, indeed. Tough choice.

Couldn't you just get one of those BarSto conversion barrels in 9mm? I'm thinking HARD about one of those for my 229 for the reduced ammo cost alone.

Well, it's not just the barrel that's different. You need new magazines... And the slide isn't as wide on the 9, the 9 balances a bit better in the hand. So, yeah, you need a new one not just a barrel.

I've been shooting a LOT of 9mm lately. It's just so much cheaper, and I don't feel so guilty with frequent range trips. I've been adding 9's like they're going out of style. This from a (once) diehard 45 guy.

But yeah, the Elite looks great, too, and there's been some good scuttle about the trigger.

Oh, I should add... I fondled a P229 SAS the other day and it was really nice! I quite liked the DAK (at least dry firing). If you're a 40 fan...

At any rate, anybody have one of these, or a P220 Match, what's it like!?

Well, it's not just the barrel that's different. You need new magazines... And the slide isn't as wide on the 9, the 9 balances a bit better in the hand. So, yeah, you need a new one not just a barrel.

If you have a .40S&W or .357SiG P229, all you need to convert to 9mm is a BarSto conversion barrel. The 9mm SiG barrel will not work with a .40/357 base gun. 9mm rounds fit the 40/357 magazines just fine.

I can't comment on the slide width, but I would be surprised if they are the least bit different externally. Doesn't matter, as the 9mm BarSto barrel is properly offset to mate with the .40/.357 internals.

I have a P229 and barrels in all 3 calibers. I use the .40/357 magazines and a #21 Wolff recoil spring for all of them. No issues whatsoever...

varoadking, you must have missed the sarcasm in my post. I'm fueling the fire for a new pistola.

But seriously, there are some fairly significant differences in slide width and weight: a 40/357 P239 won't fit in my VMII for a 9.

So I wasn't totally full of it... Just always looking to help a fella add a piece to the 'ol safe.

I'm with you on that P220 Super Match. The Two Tone with those wood grips and beavertail looks great :what: My current obsession is a P220 Carry SAS. I haven't seen one in any stores yet. My range is having Sig Weekend at the end of April. The Sig rep will be there and they have all kinds of discounts and specials. I'm sure something new will be lurking in my safe after that weekend.

I know the slide width on the P239 40/357 is wider then the 9mm. Thats why some holster makers list different ones depending on caliber. Thanks for the info on 9mm rounds fitting in .40/.357 mags. I wouldn't think that they would work. How much do the BarSto barrels go for and where is a good source to get one? I'm thinking of one for my P229 so I can keep the "miles" off of my P228.

Club membership is safe. Good luck with that Hk. Let me know how you like it compared to the Sigs. I had a USPc that I thought was a great quality gun and never gave me any problems. Blindref, just shoot that P228. You're quite unlikely to "wear it out" in your lifetime.

I spent a day at the range with my P239, a HK USPc, and a P2000 (all in 9mm). The USPc felt great in my hand, and I liked the 1911-style controls. It looked better than the P2000. I thought "that's the one." But when the shooting started... The P2000 emerged as the winner in HK's line. The trigger was so much better... Dare I say better than my P239?

I didn't have my P228 (still at SIG getting refinished) to compare, that will be an interesting comparison to do at a later date.

Just kidding - Hks are quality guns.

BTW - I do shoot my P228 every now and then, I'ts kindof like a Sunday driver. I know I can't wear it out. I just like to keep the wear and tear to a minimum.

I posted this on The Sig Forum and I'd like to throw this out here as well.
I was fondling my new P226 9mm and I noticed that when I lock the slide back and then release it with the slide release lever, sometimes the hammer drops when the slide goes forward and sometimes the hammer stays cocked. I tried it with and without a magazine (unloaded) and had the same results. I then tried it with my P229 and P220, and the hammer stayed cocked each time. I've only had the P226 to the range once and I didn't notice if the hammer dropped with the slide when I used a loaded magazine. Has anyone had this "problem" with theirs? Is this a problem??
Thanks in advance

I just got off the phone with Sig CS - was on hold for only 4 minutes! Spoke to Ray - Told me that the hammer shouldn't follow the slide when releasing it :what: , he said to send it back. Told me that if I wanted to send one of my other Sigs for the SSP ($99 special ends tomorrow), I could piggy back it with the P226 on their dime for shipping. SO - my P220 is taking the ride back for the SSP and a Nitron job. Ray did a good job in "upselling" me :banghead:

NEWS: The Brother is coming down next weekend so one way or another I'm figuring out how to get "a" 220 and "a" 229. Whether it's pawning the brothers Berretta's or getting mine back we'll see.

Loplop, I can admit to liking the fit of the USP series. I love the 9mm full size. I've also shot a .40compact quite a bit and thoroughly enjoyed it. I tried the P2000 and as much as I wanted to like it, it just didn't fit me. Kind of like the Ruger P345, wanted to like it but couldn't get there.:scrutiny:

P239 Question: I've been contemplating changing the sights.

I'm thinking an XS Big Dot front sight, as I really like the rear sight design of the drop the big dot in the V.

My complaint is that the tritium on the rear sight is a post. I want to retain the V as I don't believe when you change lighting you change your sight arrangment.

I called XS and they will do custom sights but when they wanted to know what I wanted. My ideal sight looks like this, big dot bright green front sight and a rear V with a red edge on the V. The individual I spoke with didn't like that idea and told me flat out that was stupid and they wouldn't do it.

I like the idea because the rear sight, with red at night would just be a dull glow, not quite overpowered by the front sight. A LA Sight Picture Perfect!

So my question, should I buy the XS system and cut and a lip into the rear sight the way I want it, or should I keep looking?

Does Anyone else make a rear sight V I could use along with an XS big dot front sight???

AK103K
March 31, 2007, 07:05 AM
I'm suspecting that you wont be able to get the bars on the V to stay in place over time, if they are up on the edge where you want them, and they would be susceptible to damage from impacting things.

If you havent seen the red sights, I'd look at them first. Green is really the best color as its the brightest and I believe it lasts the longest. The green rear doesnt over power the front at all, and the all appear the same on my sights.

If they wont build what you want, how are you going to do it? Sounds like an interesting project, but starting to get expensive. Then again, you may be onto your money maker. :)

I guess I could have explained myself better. I want a fast and ugly up close sight system for my SigP239 as I intend to carry it as a backup to my carry gun. That being said if I have need of it, it's "probably" going to be fast/close and very ugly.

That being said I thought a front sight big dot, along with a rear sight V to drop it in makes perfect sense. See XS Sights ads for a visual.
http://www.xssights.com/store/handgun.html

Here's a more detailed description of what I'm looking for. I like most everything about the XS system, except that along the edges of the "V" I want to put Red Glow to retain the V in low light/no light.

AK103K: While I agree "bars" would get knocked off. Again I apologize, I wasn't very clear before. My thought was to use an engraver and etch a line just below the top of the V and then color it with Red Glow.

Anyways, Thanks all for the input to make my sig what I hope it will be!

I kind of figured thats what you meant. I know from experience over the years that sooner or later, if you carry your pistol in a holster at around 4:00, that rear sight is going to hammer something. :) I think the problem is still getting the vials close enough to the top to be of use and not subject to breakage. With the vertical post, its really not an issue.

Maybe since they dont seem to want to accommodate you, you should just give the front sight a try with a plain, no light rear. For something that close, I dont think it will matter that the rear isnt lit, and your eye will still be drawn to the big front dot. Muscle memory will take over for most alignment and I doubt you'll be far off if at all.

mrgrisso,

I have a p220 with the XS sights. The key to using the sights is "dotting the i." I don't think having a glow in the dark v-notch will help you much.

One of the advantages of XS, is the uncluttered sight picture. All you have is a big dot and a single vertical bar. I've seen sights with front green dot, red bars and orange rear dots...I don't want to see a friggin rainbow when I'm trying to aim my pistol. :scrutiny:

Btw, don't let the claims that XS sights are inaccurate fool you. It's just as accurate as my novaks.

Good luck!

I have XS Big AO on my P245. They are terrific for quick, follow-up shots. The large white contrast surrounding the Tritium front sight in daylight is better than anything else I use. I would say the XS for a compact is not a bad way to go. Sight alignment is not as precise as the pinpoint fiber optic or Tritium, but it certainly is faster.

I am having a hard time deciding which grips to buy for my P228. I have always loved Nill's, and have settled on those for my P239 (and the mythical P232 that is too sexy for THIS planet that I do not own).

But I have really enjoyed shooting my P220 Carry Equinox; the grips on the Equinox are made, I believe, by Altamont. They have a different heel profile than Nill's. You can see a similar difference in 1BLINDREF and D-Man's photos above. The Altamont (and Hogue, apparently) grips have a swell down towards the heel, the Nill's are more in the palm. Since I really enjoy shooting with the P220 Equinox grips, it follows that I should buy a similar pair for my P228.

But the Nill's are prettier to my eyes, and I haven't shot a gun with them so I don't know if they might even fit better.

I'm considering the Altamont grips SIG is selling now:

I don't think they come any thinner than the factory black-plastic panels. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think as far as "bulk" goes the hierarchy is something along the lines of:

Factory or Hogue wood (thickest)
Nill wood (still kinda thick but more anatomically correct so they feel thinner)
Hogue rubber (thinner)
Factory black plastic (thinnest)

The original owner traded it in on a GSR. The spare mag was still in the wrapper. The barrel had only a slight smiley - I said had because it has a big smiley like the one on my face on it now :D :D. What a sweet shooting gun! I was planning on buying one at the up comming Sig show at my range at the end of the month. I always take my gun stash cash with me when I go "just in case" there is something there that is just too good of a deal to pass up on. The display case was full of Sigs tonight, but it wasn't a tough decision. It's my second Sig with the DAK trigger and I just can't say enough about how great it is. 2.) 245 two tone. 14,000 rounds and still tight as can be.
3.) 239 9mm.
4.) 229R 9mm.
Couldn't pick a favorite. Everyone has always shot everytime. All shoot like target pistols. Been carrying the 229 alot. Great combo of size and power. Makes a good holster or CCW gun. Sweet! Can't wait to get mine. I have a bunch on order from Milt Sparks, including a W6 for my P220C, and a VM2 for my P228. I think I'll get it somewhere in the June/July timeframe.

You can "see" when MS is about to ship your stuff if you watch your credit card statement closely. One day a charge will appear... And your holsters will shortly follow :D

I'm actually hoping to go on my "every couple of years" absolute gun splurge here in the next 6-8 weeks. I've decided on my first two purchases. I'm replacing my "lost" 229 and 220 with the Elite's of both, but the 220 is going to be a 220 Carry Elite. I'm all AFLUTTER!

Third I hope to buy a Semi Auto .223 AR style rifle. I still WANT to WANT the Sig 556. But I have yet to read a "real" range report. I spent an hour this morning searching for one. So are any members of the club members of the 556 family? If so will you post your range report? Previously I was just curious but now that I'm about to be in the market I really want to know.

I'll keep you posted next week on how it feels to shoot at the range.:)
I also just bought the Hogue Rubber Grip for the handle.

If anyone is thinking about getting a Sig with the DAK trigger - GET IT!!

I've shot my P229 DAK and now my P220 SAS DAK almost exclusively for the past two months. Each time I shoot it, I can't believe how great the DAK trigger is. I'm still thinking about sending my P239 to Sig to convert it over to a DAK trigger but they still have my P220 (ssp and Nitron) and my new P226 (warranty work). There is NO WAY I'm sending them something else before I get those two back!
The P229 is perfect since I put an 18lb Wolff hammer spring in it and a set of SAS grips on it  I'm planning on shooting it in my ranges IDPA session tomorrow night. I'm very confident with my ability to get good hits quickly out to 15 yards.
The P220 is still too new to change things on. I want to shoot it in its stock form for a few morre range sessions. The balance of the gun along with the SAS grips make it a natural. It's the sweetest .45 I've ever shot - except for maybe my WG P220 :D

Quick P239 update: I received it back from SIG with a note attached... "Rail wear is within spec and normal."

Sure wish the gunsmith wouldn't have made me send it in, but I'm happy to have it back. The P239 in my Milt Sparks VM2 reminds me how comfortable concealed carry can be.

I picked up 2 cases (1000 rounds) of Speer GDHP 124gr +P. Put a box through the P239 yesterday, it ate it up. A fun round to shoot, fairly snappy and a bit loud in the P239. I liked it.

EDIT: I just noticed a USPS box in my mailbox... Nill Grips for my P239! Sweet. Can't wait to put them on. They're darker than I would have liked, but they sure are made well. I'm leaning towards Nill's for my P228 now...

Let me know how those Nills work for you at your next range session. I'm still searching for some wood to put on my P239. I'm leary of putting something too nice on any of my carry guns. I'm worried that they'll get beat up.

Well, I guess that's a "message" not to get it now. $750 is an excellent deal, though, I couldn't get any lower than $815 with the shops I contacted. Still not terrible. But since I bought my regular P239 for $675 and I'm pleased with it, $75 extra for nights and wood grips and a taste of the DAK... I'd jump on it :D

I put the Nill's on my P239 tonight. They feel GREAT. I'm not sure exactly how, as they don't appear to have much palm swell, but they fill the hands so much better than the stock grips. With the stockers, I felt a little like I was hanging on to a flat metal framed object, which happened to be heavier on top than bottom. With the Nill's, it sure feels like I have a better hold, and the balance as a result feels better. Can't wait to try them out at the range.

In other news, my P228 showed up tonight... While I was not home. :banghead: Delivery rescheduled tomorrow. I'm very excited to see what SIG did with the Action Job on the trigger.

Had a great weekend, starting Friday the 13, I celebrated (have not done this in the last 10yrs) my 58th B-day. As a Birthday gift from me to my wife, I picked up her Sig P232 SL 380 w/Polymer grips and gave it to her that evening to blow out the candles on my cake.. j/k We re-grouped all day Saturday, with the German Shepherd and the Cat, and went to the Long Beach Grand Prix Champ Car Race all day Sunday. Looks like the 58th year is gonna be a great one.. finally.

She was thrilled with it, as it's her first gun, and we will baptize her with it this coming weekend at the local indoor range that I bought us both a year membership.. almost 4 months ago when the newer handgun/s journey began. The range is only 10mins from the house, the Perfect indoor range.

This has been a long journey, living under the thumb-press rules here in Calif. in that, starting with my 40cal, then my/our 9mm, and finally her 380, has taken 30 days wait under our "make sure you really want it & we, the State, and Feds, want you to have it" waiting period in between any, and each, purchase of a handgun.

So, now that I have all 3, and my game plan is complete, getting the wife involved, so we can shoot together.

I'm looking forward to this summer if, and when, Sigs P220 Carry may come to town (Calif approved) and I complete (laughing) my journey and handgun collection with the 45 cal.

Thank you Sig for making the perfect gun/s for the wife to start out with, and grow from there into my/our P229R CT 9mm.

The P239 9mm SAS is still there. It is still being held for some lucky slob. I told them to call me if he changes his mind. Evil addiction :banghead:

I shot the IDPA course that my range runs once a month last night. If anyone ever gets a chance to do it, go for it. It was a real rush and an eye opener at the same time. There is a big difference moving and shooting instead of standing stationary in front of a paper target at 7 to 15 yards. It was a very humbling experience. Need more practice!
I can't wait til next month!!

Will do, Blindref, although I might wait until new grips are chosen/ordered/received. I'm probably buying some Nill's, I just love how they feel on my P239. I will make my decision after I shoot Thursday, when I decide if they shoot as well as they feel/look.

I would like to try IDPA this summer. My indoor range doesn't host, but there are some sortof local outdoor ranges that do. Unfortunately their schedules won't jive with mine until late May/June, so it will be awhile before I get out there.

Keep me posted on the Nills/P239. I'm still not sure what I'm gonna put on mine, or if I'm going to have it changed over to a DAK. If I change it to a DAK, I'll try to get the SAS grips for it. They feel really good. If I end up buying that P239 SAS, I'll leave my P239 .40 DA/SA.

Wolff 18lb hammer springs on a DAK

I just got off the phone with a Wolff tech to make sure the hammer springs I bought for my P229 DAK would be the same as my P220 Carry SAS DAK. The tech told me that the hammer springs Wolff sells are for DA/SA only.
Wolff doesn't sell the DAK hammer springs as of yet. The tech said that the DAK hammer springs are different then the DA/SA triggers.

I've put between 500-700 rounds through my P229 DAK with the Wolff hammer spring in it without any failures to fire or any other problems at all.

Does anyone else here have a DAK with a Wolff 18lb hammer spring in it??
If so, how many rounds have you put through it and have you had any problems??

Just to wrap things up on the issue of my new P239 jamming.

First, thanks to those who made suggestions, especially 1BLINDREF and loplop.

My original problem was that my new P239 was jamming on 75% of the Sellier & Bellot cartridges. The jam was that the new cartridge was ramming into the back of the spent case, which was only half way out of the chamber.

Manually recycling the rounds through gave me the same result.

I cleaned the magazines more thoroughly and the rounds (snap caps now) would cycle through more reliably with one of the two magazines.

I suspected the extractor was not correct due to what appeared to be an anomaly, so I took it in to a gunsmith I trust. He said that what I was seeing was normal; that there is a wedge piece somewhere that pushes out the ejector a tiny bit when the slide is closed. He recommended the use of Kroil on the ejector and ejector bolt if I had any doubts.

I bought the Kroil, used it to clean around the ejector and cleaned out the magazines again. I finished up with Eezox.

I tried manually cycling the snap caps: no problems with either magazine.

I took it to a range. The Sellier & Bellot cartridges would now jam about 1 in 10, but I was warned when I bought them (the only .357 SIG ammo on the shelves at the time) that the S & B cartridges were made a little out of spec, a little long or something, and that might happen. I’m also wondering if those cartridges are a bit underpowered, not containing enough pressure to reliably throw the slide back.

I switched to Federal JHP. All 50 rounds fired with no problems, using both magazines. At one point, though, as I was starting to load one of the magazines the upper metal piece at the top of the magazine that pushes the cartridges shot out from the magazine and landed eight feet down range. I assume from that event that that magazine has had problems with the “lips” all along.

One other anomaly I noticed is that the slide would only lock back on completion of a magazine’s cartridges about 80% of the time. I’m going to see if there’s some other part of the P239 I need to clean more thoroughly. This surprises me, though. I bought a new P220 ten years ago and I didn’t have to do this much cleaning. It worked perfectly from the beginning.

So, I’m progressing. Meanwhile, what a fun little pistol ! It feels great in my hand and I’m shooting more accurately with it than any of my other guns.

.357 SIG cartridges are kinda snappy; takes me longer to get back on target than with my larger 9mm pistols, of course.

It doesn’t seem as loud as I was led to expect (it’s loud enough). The other noticeable characteristic is these babies are flame-throwers: very bright flash.

loplop
April 20, 2007, 07:57 AM
The mag not locking back: do you shoot with a high thumbs grip? It is possible that you are inadvertently tripping the slide release. I believe others have reported this happens with their P239's, but not their other SIGs. Must be something in the design of the mag release, or the grip.

I don't have that issue, but I don't ride my thumbs high.

My P239 needs no more cleaning than any other pistol I've owned, so unless yours is VERY dirty I don't think that's it. I do clean after every range session, but I'm not a perfectionist.

I do, however, clean under the extractor lip every time I clean my guns; for me, that means taking a patch wet with Hoppe's, doubling it over, and using a straightened paperclip to push it under the claw. Just a habit I garnered from a picky 1911.

In other news... The Nill grips are superb on the P239. I am so happy I waited to find a pair. They fit my hand beautifully, and make the grip fill the hand a little better. The balance of the gun feels so much better with the Nill's. I shoot a little better with them. My only reservation with them is they feel a little dry... Do they need regular oiling? I'll let everyone know how they hold up to a summer of carrying.

P228 and Action Package: I'm not thrilled. The trigger is nice, but how much nicer than before I spent the $150? Not much. Maybe a tad smoother in DA, but it was never rough to start with. Honestly it just feels like the trigger group was cleaned and lubed... Not real appreciable change in action. I'm pretty disappointed, to tell you the truth.

That said, the P228 is a wonder. I am so glad I grabbed that gun. 1993 W German vintage, tight as a duck's butt (unlike my P239!) and a natural shooter. I really like that gun, and it deserves some Nill's, too. I like the nitron'd slide, although I can see some gloss differential when holding it in the light. I hope that's not a thin application, just a remnant of SIG's stripping of the slide (it was blued, of course). I know some aren't hot on nitron, but I like the way it looks, and the price was right since the gun was already back at SIG getting the SSP.

SSP: well worth it. SIG did a great job detail stripping, and of course the new nites are great. A sweet deal, even at the new price of $129. I do wish they would have put in new magazine springs, but I guess I could buy those on my own :)

Sorry to hear about your disappointment with the action job. For $150, the trigger should feel much better. Maybe contact CS and tell them how dissapointed you are. Maybe they'll do something for you on a future job. At least the SSP and the Nitron job came out good. I just ordered magazine springs from Wolff for my P229 magazines. They are $20. for 3.

Did Sig inform you that your gun was finished and that they were shipping it back to you so you could look for it??
Thanks for the report on the P239/Nills. Are the Nills oil finished?

Silver Bullet-

It sounds like that magazine has issues. Did you buy the gun new? If you did, I'd contact Customer Service. They'll probably send you a new magazine. I've heard that they have done this with others that have had problems with new guns/magazines. Good luck and keep on shooting the Federals, sounds like your gun doesn't like the S/Bs.

Well, I did it (again :D ) as I went up to my local gun store to get a case of 40cal and 380, and looked at the new Sigs, and they had this P220R, but it was shorter than the standard P220R, and slightly longer than the P220 Carry. I put a deposit on it, and it comes with two 8 round mags, and Sig Night Sights and regular black grips.

I can't find anything at the Sig Site, but it's a Two-Tone Stainless steel barrel, with black aluminum frame, with a rail, but the rail is the same length, but a bit smaller than the other two models rails in depth, same width.

It is the same Height as the standard 220 5.5" and width 1.49" and weight 31.2oz

Anyone have an idea of exactly what P220 DA/SA model this may be?

It's NIB.

Bizarre: are you sure it's not a P220 Carry? I've never seen a railed sig in between the Carry and "full" size P220, with the same grip as the P220. That sounds an awful lot like a P220 Carry two-tone w/NS.

Yes, I'm like you :what: , but it definitely is a P220 45cal, and I put it next to a standard P220R and it is shorter, and is longer than my Sig P229R Carry 9mm which is the same size as the P220 Carry.

That I know, for sure.

Saw in another thread, where some guy just bought a new Sig P220st 45cal, and I asked the question of size, but have not heard yet from them. Another member of the Beretta forum, where I hang my hat also, said he belonged to the Sig site, (which I got booted out of for not going along with the Sig-Heil!! gang of: Sigs RULE, all others suck) and would check the model number out over there and get back with a report.

Getting to the point where I'm almost shooting my Sig P229 as good as my Dan Wesson Razorback 10mm. Which is impressing the heck out of me as I have both the .357 Sig and 40 S&W barrels and shoot equally well with either. And both the Sig barrels are 1.1" shorter than the DW barrel.

I purchased my first Sig (P226 in 9mm) in 1995 and it was extremely accurate. Then I got a deal on a P226 with night sights in .40 and sold the original to a friend. The day he came to pick it up we went to the range and shot an informal match against 12 other guys. I came in first and he came in second!
He recently said that he would like to sell it and I am really tempted to buy it back. I sold it to him for $550 and he said that is what he would like to get plus it comes with a Galco holster and some more mags.

I bought a complete P226 in 9mm minus the frame and now I can interchange the "upper" and mag on my .40 and shoot 9mm out of the same gun. The only difference I can see in the frame assembly is the ejector is shorter on the 40.

A friend had a P220 frame and a slide that had been butchered. Looked like someone tried to port it and put a Bomar sight on it. Anyway, I bought it and found another parts gun to make one good one. It shoots pretty good but it needs to be refinished.

So what do you think? Do I need 3 Sigs? Is $550 still a fair price?

Lonestar49
April 23, 2007, 02:28 AM

Hmmm, 550 for your old P226 9mm with extra mags and a good holster to go with it. And it shoots accurate still, as you said, he placed 2nd, to you, with it.

Yep, I'd be a buyer I think..

Good luck,

Personally, I think friends should extend deals to each other. If you sold it to him for 550, and he used it for ?? rounds, he should pay some sort of "rental" fee, don't you think?

Dunno, when it comes to family, friends, and money... Lots of people have different thoughts. It's usually a bad mix. Regardless... I'd ask if he'd take something a little lower, considering he did wear the thing.

Update: LL,

Went down today, Wednesday, and took my P229 9mm Carry, and put the P220st (stainless steel barrel) Two-tone next to it. Took cell phone pics, that being a new phone, turned out to be movies.. lol, and my gun salesman was taking the pic's with the phone as I held them. But, it is a bit longer lengthwise, not much, maybe this much ____ and, it was taller, being in the 45 grip vs the 9mm double stack mag/grip by aprox 3/4" total height

But, they had a really really nice looking P220R standard in the display case, Black Nitron finish, with the exception of the hammer, trigger, decock lever, slide release lever, and slide lock lever, in stainless, *or maybe Nickel, finish is the correct description. And, I started thinking, that my carry for CCW would really either be my Beretta 40cal, or my Sig 9mm Carry, as the smallest gun, the Sig P232 SL 380 was my gift to my wife.

SOOOOO, I decided to get the full size P220R, the one described above, as it will be my home SD/SD gun, along with it and either the 9mm or 40cal, will go with me to the woods, when fishing, and those will be OWB carry anyway.

So, I'm gonna have all 3 sizes, small 380, medium 9mm Carry, Mid full size 40cal, and full size 45.

Pick it up in 30days, and by then I can figure out this cell phone, or the new digital camera we just got, take pics of all, put them in this PC, and then download them to this thread.

FYI, the salesman said, and I chked the owners manual of the smaller 45, and all it said was, P220ST for Stainless Steel barrel, and he thought it must be a P220R Carry model. My only thought is, acc to Sigs site specs on Length of the P220 Carry is the same as my P229 Carry which both specs say 7.10 inches length, and that is not quite the fact with my 9mm Carry compared to the that P220st carry putting them side to side.

Go figure..

Changed, gonna hold off till the P220R arrives, then most likely get a P226R standard model instead, as I looked at the Blackwater, and the front night sight is white/glow red, and the 2 rear are white/glow green. Went into the dark place, and was very disappointed with the red glow front site, as the 2 rear green jumped out, and the red was way too hard to pick up, so, why spend the extra 200 dollars for the BW, when I can use that money for some really nice grips, as that was the final bust of the package for me. They were too wide and, to be honest, slippery IMHO.

Nice showpiece gun, but not my cup of tea for a working gun.

I just came from the Range. I took off half of the day to go shooting:evil:
I shot my new P239 SAS 9mm. This is my new favorite Sig (they tend to all be my favorites every time I get back from the range.)
The guys at my range are getting ready for the Show. There are blue boxes everywhere behind the display counters :what: They now have 4 P239 SAS 9mms in stock and 6 556s, along with just about everything else Sig makes!! I've already added to my Sig family this week, so I won't be adding anything new this weekend. I'm OK with that as I'm extremely happy with my new SAS. Here's some pictures.

I need to get me some SAS! How are the SAS wood grips on the P239? I have the standard 239 and had to switch to hogue finger groover grips to get it a little wider. THe wood grips look bigger than the regular factory plastic grips.

The wood SAS grips are perfect for my hand. I have big hands. They are thicker then the plastic standard grips. I have the Hogue finger groove grips on my P239 40&W. They take care of the recoil really nice and fill my hands up. The only thing I don't like about them is that they are too sticky for CCW. My shirt tends to grab on to them. Thats why I bought the SAS grips for my P229. I love the feel of the SAS grips. If you try them, I think you'll like them.

I have large hands also, and I was dumb enough to fondle a 239 SAS at my local range. Boy, if I had money I'd grab one of those in a heart beat. Tomorrow should be a fun day, local gun show, and then I'm going to try my hand at some action shooting my local indoor range is doing. I'm sure the Navy won't let me down! :)

Anybody out there get a 220 Match or Super Match yet? How is it?

I might just have to look into the 239 SAS. I had my heart set on a P220 SAS, but wow...that is beautiful, and if my fat mits can grasp it with those gorgeous wood grips I might just give in. I'll have to call around and see if any local shops have one. :-)

Oh, and I may as well list my Sigs while posting in the Sig club! It's a pretty diverse collection. I will list in the order purchased. ;-)

1. P232ST (a sweet shooter and a looker to boot! Bites the webbing of my hand but never enough to draw blood).
2. P229 .40/.357 (no rail!!!) (Actaully I am not a huge P229 fan. This is my least favorite Sig. I shoot it the worst of all my Sigs. I still won't get rid of it though! ;-)
3. P226 9mm (no rail!!!!) (My favorite handgun of all time)
4. GSR (1st Gen--mine has worked VERY well, only a FTF here and there. I am going to buy a couple 7 round mags and see if they work better, but no complaints at al on this beautiful gun. It has me wanting another 1911!)
5. P220 ST (most beautiful gun I have ever seen)
6. P239 .40/.357 (nice carry piece, fits in my hand well enough with the hogue grips. It hicups on S&B .357 ammo but eats S&B .40 all day long).

I am hoping to add some of the flashier new Sigs, starting with an SAS or two and an Equinox and an Elite and the new P220 compact (if it fits me)over the next year or so.

D-Man, can you tell me where (the site addy) of where you got your wood grips. They look less polished, which I like, and less slippery, up higher, than what I have felt of Sigs, for example: on a Sig P226R Blackwater, that came with Sig wood grips (they were full rap-around, plastic grips IIRC) that were to wide and slippery for my likes.

I would like to get a set for my Sig P220R NIB that arrives in 3 weeks. OR possibley, like the wood Sig grips on the Upper Sig Two Tone SAS, as they appear less polished high, and more grit.

Even fake wood, color wise, plastic grips would do, as I really would like to stay as close to the guns factory black, plastic grips width and grit.

Thanks,

Well i'm proud to report that I put 200 rounds down the pipe with no problems. I shot the 226 9mm better then ive shot any other gun (which isnt saying much, i've only shot a 220 and 357 revolver....only been shooting 2 months as well).

All my shots were within 6" groups, whereas in the past I was lucky to get half of my shots on the paper. After I shot, I had the guy put on some Houge rubber grips for me, and while he did that I started looking for my next purchase (besides a few thousand rounds of 9mm). Sadly the Houge grips he had in didn't fit my 'older' 226 or so he said, so I saved myself $17. Also, my sister is in town this weekend and I brought her with me and shes now hooked. She was in the army reserve and apparently she never had to fire a pistol.

CN: Sig 226 in 9mm is a great gun to shoot for a newb.

Lonestar49 - the wood grips on my P228 are Nills.

I actually picked mine up from a member at SigForum. You can find these at other places, but one site that is highly regarded is MacTec:

http://mactec-militaryarms.com/

The good news for you is they have them in stock......the potential bad news is that they cost $138. That there is the only negative towards the Nill grips - the high price.

They feel incredible in the hand, and as you see, they look great on the gun too. Before spening the money (if that's a concern), you may want to see if any friends or shops might have a gun with Nill grips on them to see how they feel for you. Worst case if you buy them and don't like them (which is rare), you should be able to sell them for an amount very close to what you paid for them.

There are some cheaper nice wooden grips out there (RoCo and even Sig has new ones out), but the Nills are considered top of the line, and have the best feeling palm swell.

Editing to add another picture of my 228 w/ the Nills from the other side to let you get a better idea on how they look.

I am left handed and it seems the decocker lever may be in my trigger finger path.

1. Is it ever used?
2. Does anyone need it?
3. May it be removed?

Which SIG makes the better carry gun? I presently carry a P2000 or S&W M&P Compact and love both.

I've simply read too much on this thread and have become infected with the NEED to get a SIG.

My wife says she'll leave if I get one more gun.....I'll miss her.

^^ Lonestar49 - I've always felt that the gun companies should support these forums, as every time owners put up new pictures, somebody is usually going to go out and buy something new. I've thought about a P220, but I already have a 1911, and the price of shooting .45 is getting too expensive for me.

^ Man With a Gun - I don't know how a lefty would feel about the decocker, but I am sure there are some of them that will read this thread that can comment about it. I will say that it is needed, as it is the only safe way to take the gun from SA to DA mode. For example, when you load the gun and rack the slide, it's automatically in SA mode. For you to holster the weapon safely, you'll need to decock it.

Sig does make models called DAK - it's their version of a consistant pull trigger. These do not have the decocker.

Your P228 looks great wearing those Nills. Thanks for the link to MacTec. They do a great job and I believe they are one of the only Nill distributors around.

Man With A Gun -
I'm right handed so I can't tell you from my personal experience about the decocker lever getting in the way, but my father was a lefty and he had no problems shooting my P220 or P228 at all. Like D-Man said, the decocker is absolutely needed for operating your Sig DA/SA safely. When you push the decocker lever down, the firing pin of the gun is blocked so the hammer can safely drop back into DA possition. Try to rent a Sig DA/SA to see if its a problen for you before you buy one. You could also look at the DAK (DAO) version of the Sigs. It's the best double action only that I've ever shot. I like it so much that the last 3 Sigs that I bought were DAKs (look at my post #385)

Richard-
Nice collection :D I'm with you on some of the new models Sig is coming out with. I'm a bigger fan of the "classic" West German P series guns. They are what got me started collecting Sigs. I do however like the SAS and the DAK triggers. I guess in this day and age that we live in, Sig didn't want to be left behind when it came to styling and "glitter" that their competition is bringing out. As long as Sigs quailty and service doesn't suffer, I'm OK with the direction that they are going. I think its just a phase right now. They'll probably come out with a "classic" Sig line like S&W has in a few years after this fad fades away.

loplop and hrgrisso-
The Sig show was great. The Sig rep had every gun that Sig makes to test fire. You could buy a chance for $3.00 to win a new gun and pick any Sig that you wanted to shot including 5 rounds of ammo (regulars got a few extra rounds :D ) The 556 was the most popular choice. I got a chance to run 20 rounds through it. It was nice  . The only thing that I didn't like about it was its weight. I didn't like the way it was balanced. It feels front heavy and bulky. Other than that, it was awesome.
I also shot a GSR - very sweet, and a P226 X-5, AWESOME!!
The prices of the guns were very low. The P239 SASs 9mm or .40S&W were $745.00 which got you out the door for less then $800.00. If you bought a new Sig, the rep gave you a mail in certificate for a free magazine.
I don't know how many guns were sold in the two days, but I saw alot of paperwork being filled out! :what:

Does this factory photo make anybody else nauseous?

Nope. I've got one on order. I love suppressed weapons, and I'm all over anything factory threaded that isn't the HK Tactical. The brown frame was specified in the contract, and doesn't hurt me at all. The high sights are really nice when you've got a can hanging off the muzzle blocking regular height sights. The 10 round mag? If it bugs you so much, stick an 8 in there and call it good.

For what it's worth, I think the company's new "direction" is ridiculous (e.g. Equinox, rails, Revolution, SAS, beaver tails, etc.). Do what works, and don't cheapen it by appealing to the front row.

Speaking as a Sig dealer, I'm really glad to see them branching out. Variety helps sell guns. I've been selling Equinoxs way out of proportion to their price. After the initial problems their 1911s have been great. The SAS in the 239 is a good seller. I personally love the Elite trigger with the beavertail.

And they all seem to still work, so I don't get how having more options cheapens the guns.

And you might find this particularly blashpemous, but the X5 absolutely rocks. I put several mags through one at our machine gun shoot a couple of weeks ago, and it was amazing. :)

I don't own a Sig but I really want one. After seeing the Firepower TV review of the Sig 226 being tortured, I can't help but stand in awe at how well the Sigs are built. The only other pistol I know of that is comparable to that is the Glock, but...the idea of a plastic pistol without a safety bothers me. :P

Anyways, I wanted to ask about the 232. I really really want one. :) Only problem is that my OCD is holding me back because it seems like it's a PPK knockoff. Is that what it is? Or is the 232 a completely different pistol? A review I read said that Sig designed it to be an "improved" PPK. I've heard a LOT of really bad things about the PPK over at thefiringline, so I'm really...weary of the PPK now.

Can someone who knows more about the 232 and the PPK tell me what relationship there is between them, and which is the "better" pistol?

The classic P series Sigs don't have safeties, and the SigPros are polymer without safeties. :p In fact safety equiped Sigs are fairly new (like my P220C SAO).

Can someone who knows more about the 232 and the PPK tell me what relationship there is between them, and which is the "better" pistol? My understanding is the P230/P232 series are very similar to the PPK series. I've never fired a P230/P232, but I have fired the PPK/S. I couldn't get comfortable with the PPK/S grip (sharp edge on the backstrap); I don't expect the P232 would be any different (very similar form factors). Build quality wise I doubt there will be any complaints on the Sig.

It's a bit outside the scope of your post, but what are your plans for the P232? If you're thinking concealed carry, I would advise you to research the .380 ACP round both the PPK & P232 fire. It's generally considered to be an unreliable manstopper. FWIW

I own exactly one Sig. A P245 that I purchased in January of 2001 - three months after getting hired by my department. At the time those officers who didn't have their own handgun got a Smith and Wesson 6906. We were authorized to purchase and carry any modern high quality handgun in 9mm, 40or 45 acp.

As soon as I recieved my equipment and uniform allowance I went and purchased the P245. It fit my hand and I liked it - even more then the 220. I went through the police academy and almost seven years with that 245 riding on my hip. Never failed to qualify with it and it never failed me. I was the only officer to carry the 245. I later added the eight round magazine whne Sig came out with it and my reloads were eight round 220 mags.

Late last year the department changed and is now issuing GLOCKS to all officers. I opted for the G19 because the G21 is just to big for my hands. My 245 has been retired to my gunsafe where it sees occassional outings to the range. I'm never getting rid of it.

Now I'm considering buying a 239 in 9mm. Just because.

I've owned a couple of Walthers, and do own two P230's. As far as I'm concerned, the SIG's are the better pistol. They are more comfortable in my hand and to shoot, lighter, dont bite, and have much nicer triggers.

My German made PPK was flawless, my American made PPK/S was not. It went back to the factory a number of times and always came back without the problem being solved. The rear of the slide on the Walthers are sharp and pointy, and if your not careful, will peel the skin off your hands. The SIG's are very reliable and dont bite. The Walthers are notorious for heavy DA triggers. The SIG's DA trigger is something to marvel at, and makes shooting them very easy.

If you just have to have a Walther, I'd look around for a German gun.

Mr. S-
My P220 Carry SAS is absolutely an amazing gun. Its balanced perfectly and it seams to be the perfect weight and size for a .45acp. Every time I shoot it, I'm more impressed with it. I really like the DAK trigger.

Rob87-
If you are looking for a good Sig for CCW, check out the P239. Its available in 9mm,.40S&W, and .357sig . You can get it in traditional DA/SA or with the DAK (DAO) trigger. It's not much bigger then the P232, and the calibers are a much better choice for SD then a .380.

I am going to go thru all the pages in this forum in the next couple of days and see if I can learn anything. I will say that my hands are very small and I do have a hard time holding most SIGs in the proper hand hold, but I have learned to shoot pretty good with my short finger hold. Oh yeah almost all of my SIGs have a short trigger.
Right now I am thinking of selling some of my SIGs because I am an old man and none of my children are really interested in weapons. That is what happens when you get divorced and she raises the kids.
Have a good day. Gene

First, Welcome to THR and to The Sig Club. :)
You have a nice collection there. It's ashame your kids aren't into shooting. Can you get them into now? Its never too late.
There's alot of good information on this thread and on THR in general. If you don't get the info that you are looking for here, there is always the Sig Forum. If you get on there, you'll recognize some of the same names over there that are here. It takes a week or two to get registered, but its worth it. Here is a link the the Sig Forum.

Look forward to learning what you know about Sigs :D

:) I made a mistake on my SIG-Pro it is a model SP2009-9-Special. It feature a blue stainless outling side with contast sights. Nothing too fancy, but cool. One of the guns of the month SIG put out during 2005.

My 245 is a Classic Compact Size Custom Shop P245. It features:
Limited to 75
Action enhancement by SIGARMS Custom Shop
11 degree target crown on barrel
Novak low carry 3 dot system
SIGARMS custom shop logo on slide
Individuall numbered "01 of 75" etc.
one 6 round magazine and one 8 round extended grip magazine
Lockable aluminum carry case
Certificate of Authenticity
Finish of nickel TPFE
It was also one of the guns of the month SIG put out in 2005.

Mine is #53 of 75. I have not shot it yet, but I think I will start carrying it soon. I am not sure yet.

Hello Guys - I'm not a member... but one of my brother's good friends had a 229 and a 239 for several years - before I met him, he had to sell them off. I've always been intrigued with SIG's and went and took a look at them at the local gun store the other day with the intent of getting a compact .40...i left without one, and I have a few questions and the dolts at the gun store are hopeless. Glad to see this thread - I expect you guys are the perfect source for info :)

The long throw "swing-action" feeling de-cocker next to the mag release kind of threw me off a bit, especially in how little resistence there was when de-cocking (my other guns require a solid 'snap' to de-cock, but the entire movement range of the SIG de-cocker was buttery smooth with hardly any feel of a 'break' when the hammer de-cocked.... and though I think that I could get used to it, ALL of my other semi's have a 'high' mounted on the slide, thumb decocker/safety (S&W 659, Beretta mod 96 are two examples). I'm a bit worried i'd reach for the decocker on one of my other guns and hit the mag release instead, if i trained with the SIG alot. I noticed in skimming the thread that an awful lot of you guys own a ton of SIG's and in some cases nothing but - is that the reason why? Is there any model of SIG that has a decocker mounted to the slide/frame more akin to the other manufacturers decocker?

The other thing that bothered me was that when the gun is just sitting there ready to go, the hammer is partially cocked?? And while partially cocked, there is no bar to block the hammer from the firing pin. All of the other semiauto handguns I've handled have had safeties that either blocked the firing pin or rotated the firing pin/transfer dealio so that the hammer could fall on it without impacting the pin. The 1911's i've held had a manual safety'bar' that held the hammer locked open when cocked... In fact, both my beretta and s&w 659 de-cock AND safety by blocking the firing pin from the hammer. I have two questions about the SIG method - (1) what stops the hammer from falling out of the partial-decock state, and why does sig do it like that? The trigger felt 'spongey' to me because the detent that holds the hammer had a bit of a 'spring' or 'give' to it...it really made the trigger feel weird. and (2), with the hammer half cocked, it appears that anything could fall into the gun between the hammer and the firing pin. Pocket lint, tooth picks, change, etc. There was a good 1/4" gap constantly visible on the ones i checked out in person. Are there any SIG models that do not always have the hammer half-cocked like that as the 'safety'?

If you get a bunch of Sigs, you'll have to get used to them, and that may affect your performance with other styles, that's just something you'll either have to accept, or train to get around.

I don't know about the other guys, but I know for myself I'll probably stick mostly with Sigs. I don't think the Sigs are the be all end all, and I do shoot other make/models whenever given the chance, but I always find myself going back to my Sig and enjoying it the most. So I'll be getting more Sigs are they're the best for me.

First off, once you decock a Sig, it's not partially cocked. The small gap is just the normal resting state.

1) All the DA/SA, DAO, DAK Sigs have automatic firing pin blocks (not sure what the SAO have), that can only be disengaged by the trigger. Try this, when the Sig is decocked try to push the hammer till it hits the firing pin. It won't go far enough. With the PISTOL EMPTY, cock it, pull the trigger to decock it and hold the trigger down. Notice how the hammer goes all the way forward to the firing pin. Let go of the trigger, let go of the hammer, and you'll hear a click as it reengages the safety.

2) I don't see how change could possible fall in there, although I suppose pocket lint or toothpicks could. Though I wonder if either of those could stop it from firing. I guess my solution would be, don't carry it in your pocket? It's a little large for that it seems to me. From what I've seen the DAK models have the hammer recessed into the slide a bit more which could help.

+1 Chem Geek-
Well said.
To add, if you take the slide off, you'll see the firing pin block. If you lay the slide on a table upside down, you can push the firing pin block in (round peg looking thing near the back of the slide). While holding it in, use a pen or a toothpick and push the back of the firing pin. You'll see the firing pin pop out of the hole where it makes contact with the primer. Try pushing the firing pin without depressing the firing pin block and you'll see it won't pop out.

I bought a P239 SAS 9mm about 2 weeks ago. Great gun that handles really well. If you don't like the DAK trigger first time out, don't give up on it. IMHO its the best DAO trigger out there. I now have 3 Sigs with the DAK trigger (also have a P229 .40S&W and a P220 Carry SAS) and shoot them almost exclusively.

I was able to shoot my P226ST (9MM) for the first time today, and I enjoyed every minute of it. The thing is smooth, and the weight does a great job in soaking up recoil. I can't wait to get it to an indoor range so I can see how good I can shoot at shorter distances.

Afterwards I shot a few mags though my P228, and at first you could really notice the stiffer recoil. The P226ST might spoil me!

If you asking for accuracy I would say that only other pistol you can compare to P210 is Luger but P210 is also extremely reliable what I can not say for Luger. I purchased this gun in local shop and it was in bad shape (some rust in grip area and barrel is also corroded by the end, bluing was missing about 30%).This is actually Danish military pistol so it was in used condition and with black plastic grips.
I was able to replace grips and fix ejecting problems by gunsmith but I still have only one mag and can’t find a second.

My UPS driver dropped off a package for me yesturday. It was my P220 and my P226 back from Sig.

I got those grips off of eBay. There are no markings on the back of them at all. The seller said that they were factory grips?? I don't know if they are or not, I just liked the looks of them. I know that they are walnut, but thats all I can tell you about them. Maybe Sig offered them on some of the older models. I've never seen them on any Sigs before.

I bought my first Sig. :)
I posted a thread of the following but I guess it fits here too so:

I got a new Sig P220R with night sights yesterday and broke it in this morning. This is my first semi-auto so I don't have much to compare it to. I've shot a few others but never owned one. I did a lot of research on .45s (1911s vs Sigs) and decided this was the one for me. I shot my friends 220 and loved it. The one I bought says "SigArms Exeter, NH ... Frame Made in Germany' on the right side of the frame with the Sauer circle logo next to it. I haven't seen that before. The Sauer logo looks nice.
http://www.waffen-hammann.de/images/Sauer-Logo.gif

My initial reaction is that this gun is simply excellent. It feels great in my hands. Is very accurate. I only fed 150 rounds through it but I'm sure it will be as reliable as Sigs are known for. After breaking it down to clean and looking it over, the parts all look great, every thing is very nicely/precisely finished inside and out.

Welcome to the world of Sigs. It doesn't take long to become addicted

P220s can be concealed, but they are on the big side. Even the P220 Carry is stretching the limits. Depending on where you live, winter carry isn't a problem. It gets tougher as the weather warms up. Look at a P239 for warm weather carry.

I beg to differ. The P220 is a Colt Commander sized pistol and not at all that big or difficult to conceal. Its also not all that much bigger than a P239.

Actually, most all of the SIG's, except for the P230/232's, are really not very different size wise. Just at most a half inch here and there.

-----------------

In my book, I CCW my Beretta Px4 40, and I was going to go with the P220 Carry, but when I took my Beretta down to the gun store with me to compare it to the P220R standard, I was VERY pleased, in both, that it is just a hair longer __ like that and they both have narrow tapered/sloped slides, 1.4 vs the much wider Carry models width of 1.5.

They are like twins, and as I said, I CCW the Px4 with no problems all day, in pure comfort and they are both lightweight guns as well, which makes it work as a total CCW comfy package, that doesn't paint, in either front IWB cross-fire draw w/FBI cant, or IWB 4 o:clock w/FBI cant, not to leave out, inside any front pocket.

But, make sure you are CCW legal, before you carry, because if you get caught carrying without a CCW licence, say good-bye to your gun, and your ability to purchase any more.

Enjoy both the new SIG and its CCW ability

I also noticed the length differences in a 220 standard and a 220 carry were not very much. the standard is a 1/2" longer.

you guys think Nylon holsters are harder on the finish of a gun than Leather ?

1BLINDREF
May 11, 2007, 11:43 PM
I guess it depends on how - IWB, OWB, or Smart Carry, and the holster you choose. If you are planning on IWB or a Smart Carry, a P239 is much more comfortable to carry for extended periods of time. Its grip and slide is shorter enough to make it easier to conceal then a full size P220. The P220 Carry has the same size grip size as the full size P220, but the slide and barrel is shorter. I'm not saying that its not possible to conceal a P220, I'm saying that a P239 is much easier and more comfortable to conceal IWB in the warm/hot weather months.
If you are carrying OWB, a P220 full size or Carry is no problem. You just have to make sure you have a large enough shirt to cover the gun.

AK103K
May 12, 2007, 09:04 AM
merkaba,

All holsters will wear the finish. A lot depends on how often you carry, and reholster, and in what conditions. I've found that kydex works the best for hard use in all conditions.

1BLINDREF,

I think most of it is what your willing to do to carry whatever it is. I've carried full size pistols on a daily basis, most of my adult life, and 99.9% of that was IWB. If you have a good belt and holster, you've got most of it licked. Once your used to it, the only time you notice the gun, is when its not there. Dressing around it and your attitude is really all thats left.

Personally, I find OWB's to be one of the least effective ways to carry. The holster tends to poke out at the bottom when you lift your arm, or is more easily seen if your shirt or coat blow open unexpectedly.

IWB's hide the gun up to the top of the belt. With a dark tee shirt, my SIG's disappear against it, even without a cover garment.

As I was saying before, the difference between the SIG's is really inSIGnificant..sorry, couldnt help it. :) My P220's, P226''s or P229's, are not all that much bigger than my P239, so I usually choose them over it. Mostly its a P229 in 357SIG these days, although I did just order a P220 Carry last night. :).

I'll have to try a good IWB holster for my P220 Carry SAS. The nice thing about the P220 Carry is that a P228/P229 holster fits it very nicely.
Which IWB holster do you carry your P229 in? What part of Pa are you in?

AK103K

1BLINDREF,

I use a Blade Tech kydex IWB, and off and on over last winter, a leather Milt Sparks VMII. The VMII is a nice, comfortable holster, but it is leather and I dont think it conceals as well as the Blade Tech due to the front snap being so far forward.

I now have Blade Techs for all my SIG's, they were a carry over from my 1911's. I work outside and sweat like a pig and you know what summers are like in SE PA. Once I found out how well kydex works at keeping your gun dry, I rarely use a leather holster in the summer now. Blade Tech's IWB's are about half the cost of a Sparks VMII, and in the long run, will hold up to hard use better. I still have my first BT IWB for my old Commander, and its still as serviceable after 10 + years of hard daily use, as the day I bought it. I was going through about two good leather holsters a year before that.

Right now I'm out in Snyder Co. in central PA just west of the Susquehanna (river, not road. :) ) We moved out here about a year ago from not far from your area. Rush hour now is 6 pick ups and a buggy. :) One thing lacking up here is a good gun shop. They have nothing like most of the ones down there. I dont think they even know what a SIG is up here. I've yet to see one in any of the shops except for in the bigger cities like Willamsport or Harrisburg. Your lucky to see more than a couple of pistols at all. Most of the stuff is geared towards hunting. If all goes well, I'll be back down your way next week to pick up my 220 Carry. :)

Oh, as for holster compatibility with the SIG's, I find that you can use the same holster for the P220, P245, and P226. The P229's are fatter, and the others tend to be a little loose in them and the 229 doesnt want to fit in holsters made for them. You also have to watch with the P239, as most seem to make a holster for the 9mm version and another for the .40/.357SIG versions.

Mags are also some what interchangeable. The P220's mags will also work in the P245, and the P226's mags will work in the P229's. I dont have a P228, but I suppose they would work in them too. You also need to watch the P239's. The .40 mags will work in the 357SIG guns, but the 357SIG mags wont work with a .40.

...

Well my fellow Sig addicts, I have come full circle.

Today I picked up my NIB P220R 45 and I've finally realized my long journey's dream.

As you can see below, are the Guns I have bought in the order from top to bottom and, with this latest addition to my collection, I'm a happy-camper.. lol

Once I get either the Nill's wood grips for her, but they are out of stock until, IIRC, the 15th of next month, or if someone can point out a site/place that have dark-walnut with sides with grits, and hopefully taller grit height than what Sigs offer, with the grit, let me know. Otherwise, until I get "some" wood grips, and then take, and figure out our new digital camera, and take pics of the entire family for ya, you'll all have to have patience with me.

I did buy a set of custom, full Hogue wrap-around fingered grips for it, but after putting them on, dunno, was a bit thick for my liking, so I put the factory plastic grips back on and put on an extra Hogue-slip-on fingered grip, that I had a spare of, for my Beretta, that have the same Hogue grip on, and I really like how they "both" feel with these thinner grips on both guns now.

So, off to the range tomorrow, for her baptism of fire with 250 rounds.

Let me know if ya find anywhere out there that have wood grips, dark, grit on the sides, in stock, cause I'm rdy to go with purchase to complete her unique look with the Nickel finish hammer, trigger, and all levers, with a full Black Nitron finish.

LS :)

PS.. almost forgot to metion; it came with 3 mags, 2 that hold 8 rounds, and 1 that holds 10 rounds.

...

Yes, it is longer than the 229 Carry, which I have in 9mm, but, the P220 is also considerably narrower, like my Beretta 40cal, and the P220R is only 1/4" longer than my Beretta 40 and the same, 1/4" taller.

So, do yourself a favor while waiting for that holster, go out and get an Uncle Mikes IWB #16 or #17 for 14 bucks. My Beretta Px4 40 and my Sig P229 Carry fit perfectly in the U_M's IWB #15 FYI. You can try all different IWB positions with it, and even put it in your front pocket (Levi's with T-shirt) but, you can take it out, fast, but sticks inside the holster like a glove. Not to mention, you can leave the holster, clipped-on without the gun in it, you'll see, and it will hardly let you know its inside your pants, with no damage to it.

You can FBI cant it as well, but you can move it quickly from say, 4 o'clock to 11 o'clock for driving, FBI cant, and have a great cross draw.

And it makes for a great house carry, and bed time holster, as it is fully enclosed at the muzzle end (no spiders.. lol ) but it will protect it from a little thump, bump, here and there.

Very universal to give you a no-break-in perfect feel, no heat, sweating from it, nor itching, and it will Never leave a mark on your new gun, as it hasn't with my Beretta, Sig Carry, and the new kid I just picked up today, my P220R

Before anyone jumps my case again, this is just for comfort, and finding his best IWB CCW for his gun, as he'll find his leather or Hard nylon holster, that will, in time, leave some marks, need some breaking-in, mabye get hot, cause sweating that can get to your gun thru wet leather or open muzzle end, etc.

Enjoy

My 220 Carry is my CCW. I have no problems concealing it. Currently I have a no-name holster that will go away in a month or two when my Brigade M-11 comes in. With a jacket, vest, or untucked shirt, the Carry is no problem to conceal. I placed it next to a buddy's Kimber Pro Carry TLE and it's the same size, but the Sig is noticeably thicker, not longer or taller in the grip. I'm 5'8" about 175. I don't think the 220 is too much to carry or conceal.

I'm looking for a 229 or 239 for my wife in 9mm. She claims to be 5'1" and 100lbs. I think concealing a weapon can be done with the right belt and holster.

+1 for Sig in .45 (take your choice.. they're all good!)

And RJ, indeed, the P229R Carry 9mm is a fantastic gun, and it is my hope that once my wife gets past the gun-grey-zone of the unknown, with her/our Sig P232 SL 380, she can step up comfy-wise to the 229 Carry, as she really likes the CT laser grips on it..

That way, I can continue my joy with all of them, but especially my beloved Beretta Px4 40, as that is quite the Horse to tame, but it was worth it. And for my pride and joy for the max HD, as well as, if I'm in the mood, CCW as well with my new P220R standard, as it is really the same gun, size wise, as my sweet 40cal slim Italian Babe.

But, as you say so correctly, the P220 Carry is CCW at its best, as well.

God, I love them all so..

PS.. RJ, can you list a site addy that shows that holster you're going to get?

Range Report of new P220R

What can I say, this 45 caliber, and the gun itself, is the EASIEST, most accurate gun to shoot of all I own..

It is just a BIG PUPPY DOG, as it has NO recoil and eats bull eyes at ANY distance, every-time, as fast as you want to fire off rounds.

Kinda makes the 40cal seem a bit more fun and, as of now, the chase is on to hone my 40 cal even more but, I have NO doubts, the 45 is the weapon of choice when it comes to: "most forgiving", biggest punch, with the easiest point to aim, and deliver, 9 big ones down range. :what:

Kudos to SIG and the beauty of their GUNS

LS :)

PS.. New Rating system:

45cal - STUD

40cal - Stallion

9mm - Race-Horse

380 - Rider-Horse

What I like about my 220 Carry over the standard 220 for use as a ccw isn't so much the slightly shorter length as it is the improved balance afforded by the lighter weight slide= the Carry doesn't feel as "top heavy" as the standard seems to.

...

That is exactly the opposite of what I felt, comparing the 220 Carry vs the 220 standard, was weight and balance. To me, the Carry was, or seemed, heavier, more weight in the grip, and point to-aim, whereas, the thinner, slimmer, yet slightly longer, aprox 1/2", slide of the 220 standard, and the weight and balance of point to-aim, was a big difference to me, more balanced and felt lighter.

I remember even asking the clerk, do they both have Aluminum frames?

Yes they did, but the smaller, wider, Carry felt heavier to me.

I'm sure it's in the many minor-muscle-motors that separate us all, as individuals.. ;)

I'll add my .02 for what its worth

I like the feel of both of my P220s. The P220 is my favorite Sig when it comes to balance and pointability in either the full size or the Carry version.
I think my old full size is just a little bit more accurate than my P220 Carry SAS. It could have something to do with the DAK trigger. Maybe I should get a P220 Carry in the traditional DA/SA version so I compare the two.
Damn Sig addiction :cuss: :banghead:

I'd love to join. I just ordered my FIRST pistol, a SIG 229 9mm with Crimson Trace. After quite a bit of research and some range time, that's what I selected and I can't wait for it to get here !

In the mean time, being new to both the SIG and pistol shooting, I'd appreciate some advice. I'd like to go ahead and order some extra magazines and I'm in a state which allows high-capacity mags. :D

After some research, I've concluded the best is either SIG factory mags or mecgar. I've found mags in 15, 17 and 20 round. The 20 round is advertised as "extended", so I'm assuming it doesn't fit flush with the pistol. Can anyone tell me if either or both the 15 and 17 round mags fit flush ?

Also, is there one finish on the mags that's preferable to the other ? I've seen both "blue" and "nickel" advertised, and there may be other types. Any advice on this ?

Thanks ! :p

Okay, so real quick back to holsters: I just got my first Sig, a P220 Carry, and have been having a devil of a time finding a decent holster for it. I wanted IWB, preferably leather, but I did not want to break the bank. It seems to me like the full-size P220 holsters would be too long for the Carry which would make things less comfortable. Any recommendations? I'm sorry for the digression, but whatever help I can get would be greatly appreciated.

If you get the full size 220 holster, you'll have it when you get your full size P220. :)

The difference in length is really not enough for it to matter comfort wise. I carry my P245 in my P220's holster with no problem or discomfort, and plan on using the same holster for my new P220 Carry. I'd just buy the holster for the full size gun with a rail and you'll be good to go for all the P220's, P226's, and P245's.

If you like leather, the Milt Sparks VMII is one of the nicer holsters. Top Gun Supply (www.topgunsupply.com) often has them in stock, and usually more than anyone else I see with them. If they are out of stock, they usually are not to long in getting them back in, just keep checking. They are great people to deal with.

Hey All, been reading a lot, Blindref those grips look great and I told you it'd be worth the wait.

As for Sig Holsters I went out on a limb and tried Bear Claw Holsters; http://www.bearclawholsters.com/

I got a 'hidden asset' for my Sig Pro 2340 and I love it. I hate searching for a holster that feels right. This one feels great! It's a custom so I had to wait about a month and half but man was it worth it. Most of the time with my Uncle Mike's I've gotta sinch the old waist strap to hold it steady. With this one I can carry comfortably in ever circumstance.

I finally convinced the wife to let me get a new toy so I feel a splurge coming on. Anyway, thanks to all the Sig guys here for giving me all kinds of evil ideas!

SevenMichael: Mecgar makes a 15 round flush fit magazine for the 228/229.
Mecgar also makes a 17 round magazine that fits flush for the 226.
The 17 round Mecgar and 20 round sig mag both extend past the grip.
You can however purchase an X-grip adapter(grip extension) that will allow you to use the 17 round Mecgar 226 mag in the 228/229.You will have to due some grinding to make it work.

Here is a pic of what it looked like installed on my recently traded 229R.

Do yourself a favor,:) go out and buy an Uncle Mike's #15 IWB clip-on holster for 14 bucks, while you wait.

I carry, everyday, either my Px4 40cal, or my Sig P229 Carry 9mm, which is the same size as your P220 Carry, except your grip is longer.

No break-in, no sweating, closed muzzle end (no spiders..lol) and you can wear it in all IWB positions, and you can FBI cant it as well.

Fits even in your front pocket, or like when I drive, in the front 11 o'clock IWB with cant, that allows for a quick cross draw. I'm right handed.

Just a means to try and "see" where your Carry will fit, and it will stay tight in there like a glove, yet will draw out, faster than you can.. lol

Bonus.. you can keep the holster on, with gun out, and most likely will not really notice it there, and it won't hurt the holster, or EVER mark you gun.

Great Bed, and house carry holster too, as it will protect your new gun from any slight bumps or thumps, putting on a table, etc., as well.

Again, consider it a fit all, do all, IWB temp holster, until you find what works better.

Holsters: I prefer the Milt Sparks VM2 design. For my SIGs, I have one for my P239, and it's an awesome carry combo. I have a VM2 for my P228 and a Watch Six for my P220 Carry on order right now, along with a VM2 for my HK P2000.

I have one BladeTech "UCH" IWB holster. It's for my HK P2000, and I like it OK. It certainly conceals very well... But it's just not as comfortable as my VM2's, and it shifts around a little more (has only one loop attachment instead of 2). It's my first Kydex holster. At this point I'm still giving it a try, and it's nice to have something to carry my HK in while Milt Sparks is working on my leather holster, but I'm not totally thrilled with it. Horses for courses, as the saying goes...

SevenMichael-
You made a great choice for your first gun. The P229 9mm is a good gun for carry, home defence, and just shooting the bejesus out of at the range. 9mm is still cheap and its light recoil is a great round for introducing new shooters to our sport/hobby. What Mr.S said is good advice.
Good luck with your P229!

Johnny-
I have a P220 Carry that fits perfectly in the holsters that I have for my P228 and P229. As far as IWB holsters go, I just ordered my first Kydex IWB holster from FIST Holsters. I've heard alot of possitive reviews on the Ultra Thin Kydex line of their IWB holsters so I thought I'd try one. I ordered the #K10 for my P239. You can order their holsters with different stlye of snaps and loops. They make every holster to order and right now there is a 4 week wait. They also make some nice leather IWB holsters as well. Well, here's SIG #11, a DA/SA P220 Carry with nite sights, just back from its first trip to the range and ready for a bath. :)

50 rounds of factory and 500 rounds of LSWC reloads and nary a bobble. Well, except for the one weird squib that I saw fly to, put a dent in, and bounce off the target. First squib I've had since I quit using a progressive press, and only #4 in my life time. At least it didnt get stuck in the barrel. :)

Thanks, 1Blindref! The trip was amazing. We exhausted ourselves a bit, but saw so many incredible things in the process. I have over 2600 photos between my wife and I that I need to sort through before I forget what's in all of them! :D

No gun shops at all; I did stop by a shop in Vienna that had a bunch of hand to hand weapons and some serious pellet guns, but no firearms. I did notice:
Munich police carry HK P7M8
Berlin police seem to carry a hodgepodge of many weapons
Parisian police carry SIG SP2022's

On a SIG note: has anyone purchased one of the new SIG airsoft pistols? I'm seriously considering one for basement training sessions:

I decided to run some 155 gr Ranger defensive ammo through it, not the T, and man it smelled bad. Like a smokey stinky smell.,Anyways, 2 clips later and the bullet, Winchester which is what I always use/ didnt go into the bore good enough. Ive decide Im not going to use that stuff anymore. I like the P220 carry pretty good. :)

Its about the same size as my P229's, although the grip is a little larger. Its not my first 220, I have two standard pistols and I also have a P245.

loplop,

I have one of the airsoft pistols made by the same company that is making them for SIG. It just doesnt have all the SIG logos on it. Its made by KJW. Mines a P229 copy. Works pretty much like the real thing, but doesnt "quite" recoil like my 357SIG's. :)

They are great for all sorts of practice, with force on force being the most fun. I also practice in my house (when my wife isnt home), and in the basement (my hole :) ) all the time. I took a couple of sheets of the blue foam insilation, cut a piece out about the size of the kill zone on an IPSC target, head to belly, and tacked a towel to the back to stop the pellets. Just tack your favorite bad guy target to the front, and put a tray behind, under the towel to catch the pellets, and your set. If you happen to miss the kill zone, the foam usually catches and holds the pellets.

I got my gun from here....

http://www.speedytoys.com/shop/item.asp?itemid=1287&catid=

the gun, a spare mag, a bunch of pellets and some gas cost me about $165 total. Thats less than what I saw the SIG approved gun for alone, and all I saw were sold out. It feels real close to my P229 weight and ballance wise, works just like it, and fits all my holsters, so I can practice just like I do with the real one.

Heres a pic of the two together...

I found the Wood Grips (style) that 1Blindref shows on his P220 on page 18, and ordered them from Hogue woodgrips (the pictures of P220's various wood grips-American Checkered Coco Bolo are the ones) from:

www.gunaccessories.com

But, they are not that style, but textured almost pure rectangular to just below the top, which is smooth wood.

So, I called GA.com and had them go to their sites picture, and sure enough, they saw the style I saw, and wanted, but said they are not coming thru like that anymore and they needed to change their pictures to reflect what one will actually get.

But they did give me Hogues direct number, and I'm waiting for a call back to see if I can have them made special, if they don't have any in stock.

Otherwise, I put the ones they sent on, and the gun looks AWESOME with the wood grips, yet I still needed my black, slim Hogue fingered slip-on rubber sleeve to have a, my, comfy, accurate 2-hand grip.

I must say, it looks kinda AWESOME with the Nitro black Finish of the slide and frame, along with the Nickel finish Hammer, trigger, and all levers with the wood, and the black sleeve, which allows a lot of the wood to show, on top, above the black rubber sleeve and, a tad of wood showing just below the black sleeve, giving it a unique look IMO.

Now, I must get the new Digital Camera out and figure it out, take some shots/pics, then get them here, for you all to see.

Will keep ya posted, and if by chance, I can't figure out how to post the pics, I'll ask for one of you to give me your email addy, and send the pics to you, so they can be posted for all to see.

I'll let ya know when the pics are rdy..
