I have a Security Six that had been dropped of something by the previous owner...rear sight base was dented/mushroomed. Anyhow, I have a new sight assembly and was getting ready to install.

Do I just drive the pin out with a brass punch? Does it matter from which direction?

Use a roll pin punch if you have one. I don't think it matters which direction you drive the pin. There are some springs under there too if I recall, so just do everything slowly and you'll be fine.

The pin is a solid one. A 1/16th or so punch should work from either direction--and the pin may push out quite easily. A straightened paper clip might even do the job.

First, get a small ziplock bag to hold the parts.

Next, get a small blade screwdriver that fits the elevation screw slot. Make sure it is of proper thickness and squared off. If rounded or too thick, grind it to fit the slot. Remove the elevation screw.

The cross pin is, as stated above, a 1/16" roll pin. The best way to remove that without damaging your revolver is to buy the correct roll pin punch from Brownells. Don't use an improvised tool, you can easily flare the cross pin hole (don't ask me how I know that).

You can drift the roll pin out from either side. Save it. You might bend the cross pin that comes with the new sight assembly (don't ask me how I know that, either). Put the old roll pin in the ziplock bag.

Gently lift out the rear sight assembly. There are two small coil springs underneath. Save 'em. Into the bag.

Clean the slot out well with solvent, then wipe it with a silicone cloth, before you put the new sight assembly in.

Or take it to a gunsmith. Fees in my neck of the woods are about $60 to install one.

$60????????and that probably doesn't include the sight.....the part was $20 shipped and it took me like 4 minutes including tearing my basement apart to find my 1/16 punch. Anyhow, thanks to everyone who helped, the new sight is on and ready for sighting in later this week. I reused the pin form the old set since it was stainless like the gun and the new one was blue. The only tricky part was getting both springs to stand up at the same time and get into the depressions in the sight assembly. As easily as that pin pushes out, I'm suprised it stays in place.

BLUE Loctite. ( NOT RED Loctite.) The blue will hold the pin but let you remove it with a pin punch if you ever need to. (Use the RED and you are assuming you will never need to remove it again.)

BLUE Loctite.

Not a bad idea if it looks like it's going to move on me. I own a Harley so I have a case of the BLUE in the garage.

Most of my DA and SA Rugers, including the Security Sixes, have straight pins in this location.

logical - I should have asked you how to do it before I tried it! Glad it went well. And yes, my partner paid $60 to have that done on his revolver.
