I prefer Speer Gold Dots for self defense. FMJ rounds do not expand and will over penetrate. If you are not restricted to them, I would get a good hollow point.

The ammo manufacturers love it when you pay huge $$$ for hollow points that underpenetrate. But you know, all the magazines and backwoods bullet tests prove hollow points are better than ball. Heck with what doctors say, go with what the ammo manufacturers want you to believe.

I prefer to spend money on quality HP ammo for self defense, my family and my safety is worth it.
If you feel safe carrying it, then by all means go for it. I just hope myself or my family is not downrange of you in a shooting.

.40 S&W:
Barnes XPB 140 & 155 gr JHP (copper bullet)

American Eagle is target practice/plinking ammo! I find it to be fairly inacccurate.
I would only use high performance HP's for PD. Although I'll load some FMJ's if I'm going into bear and mtn. lion country.

Yeah, all those cops that carry JHPs are just crazy. There's been no scientific testing to substantiate the effectiveness of hollowpoints fired from handguns.
BTW, you are aware that you can get inexpensive hollowpoints, right? 100 rounds of UMC JHP is about $15 or so at Wal-Mart.
