12g, 410g, 45LC, 45ACP, 9MM, 22LR

The derringer takes 45lc and 410. Holy crap does it make a nice boom. :what: :what: :what:

Overall, the best $300 I've spent thusfar. Each piece was $150. Looking to get a Bersa Thunder next.

I've never seen a SxS derringer before. Mine (and every other one I've ever seen) are O/Us. That's pretty nifty. ;)

I saw one of those little side by side, think Cobray, pistols at the last gun show here and I was tempted for $150. But, I didn't. I don't know anything about the gun, but it looked a little too Davisy for me.. :D I could see it getting loose in a few rounds. Sure neat lookin', though, ain't it? It actually could be a handy little toot as a back up, boot gun, or something. I was also a little afraid I'd get a Ruger load in that thing and blow my fool hand off, LOL! Not likely since I use jacketed bullets in that load and lead in my "light" .45 Colt load. But, I don't know how light it needs to be to be safe in that thing. My "light" load pushes a 255 grain cast bullet out of my 4 5/8" Ruger at 1000 fps about.

I own an HP22 and it's a really accurate, fun little auto. I wouldn't trust it for self defense, but I used it to fend off attacking snakes once in an infested pond, LOL! It's amazingly accurate, talkin' 3" at 25 yards off the bench with the 3" barrel, 2" with the five inch accessory barrel I bought for it. I've shot snakes to 25 yards with it and a rabbit once at about 15 yards. It's so small, it can go anywhere, though it's a little heavy. And, I like the fact it's a hammer gun, not striker fired.

The one thing I have trouble with on that HP22 is the recoil spring goes limp after 4 or 500 rounds to the point the slide won't go all the way forward against the pressure of the extractor spring and it has to be replaced. I have one spare left for mine. They're a couple of bucks a pop and resemble the spring out of a ball point pen. If they could fix that, it'd be a good functioning, low maintenance gun. I also get REAL frustrated assembling the slide with that recoil spring having no guide. :fire: Also, when that firing pin block safety starts turning itself on by itself, a drop of super glue renders it inert.

When you shoot that side by side thing, I sure would appreciate a report on it. :D I came close to getting that thing, but I had a couple hundred on me and wanted a used 3" Taurus M66 .357 which I'm REAL happy with. It actually has a spot in my carry battery. :D

Is there anything on proper loads in .45 Colt in the instructions with the gun? I guess I'm assuming there were instructions with the gun. I don't know if I'd trust anything hotter'n cowboy loads in it. Heck, I probably wouldn't wanna shoot anything hotter'n cowboy loads in it. LOL

Went shooting yesterday, here's what I observed:

Good lord do I love my XD. :neener:

The derringer is FUN. I mean it should be illegal it's so fun. I put a good 50 rounds through it and it's still as tight as the day I got it. I need to take apart the firing mechanism, as sometimes the right barrel takes 2 hammers to go. It did tear up my middle finger a bit, as the back of the trigger kept slamming into it. All in all it's very fun, and cheap to shoot...but if you're planning on putting more than 10 rounds through it get some gloves. It drew blood on the 30th round :what:

*edit*
All I shot through the derringer was some target 410 loads, some normal cowboy loads ($27 for 50) and some hot 410 hunting loads. The shotgun loads definately hurt more :what:

The hp22 is an insanely fun gun, easily my new favorite. It had some problems with ftes, ftfs, and even a couple of stovepipe jams, but when taking it apart I noticed the feed ramp had a big "scar" on it, and needs to be sanded smooth. Other than that if I kept it lubed it would still work nicely. Very accurate too, I mean surpisingly accurate right out of the box. Best $150 I've spent, especially after I take the dremel to it.

Also took my roomate's newly aquired 12 gauge Remmy 870 pump. Got some clays, and went to town. My next purchase is going to be a full size shotgun, I've never had so much fun at the range! Plus, 90 clays for $5...can't go wrong ;) and shotgun ammo is cheap, 100 rounds for $15 of some decent federal.

Anywho, enough of my ramblings...time for work :(

How accurate was the .410/.45 with cowboy loads? You'll probably wanna buy some of those five ball 000 buck loads for that thing to try, too. :D Sounds like a better gun than it looks.

My HP22 feeds and ejects pretty reliably considering it's a rimfire. I rarely have a function problem with it, though if I leave the magazine loaded for a couple of weeks, it'll be dicey on feeding. .22 is external lubed and I think get's a little sticky in the mag over time. With the 3" barrel on it, mine is most accurate with CCI Stingers which is odd as they normally aren't that accurate. But, they're great for small game out of a small pistol. I have a 5" accessory barrel and finger extension magazine I picked up for mine and the 5" barrel shoots best with cheap Federal Lightening, don't do any better than the short barrel with CCI Stinger or Mini Mag, go figure. But, it shoots well with the Federal. The gun almost transforms itself with that five inch barrel, more of a trail gun, less of a pocket gun, though it's plenty accurate enough for a trail gun with that 3" barrel on it stuffed in a back pocket. What I've never understood is how the barrel can be mounted so loosely on the frame and still have that sort of accuracy. To me, it defies logic, but the groups off the bench are the proof and I've had a lot of found with the thing afield.

As a fun gun, these little HP22s are hard to beat. Yeah, they're zinc guns and the snobs won't even consider 'em. But, they're cheap, cheap, reliable enough for plinking and hunting, and the most accurate pocket sized little .22 I've yet to test. Hard to not like that sort of accuracy out of a pocket, I don't care what the gun is made of. And, I can attest that the factory warranty and consumer service is top notch! Mine was early production and there was a redesign of the slide which was cracking and mine did. They sent me the new part post haste after contacting them and threw in a new magazine for my troubles. I've had no problems with the gun in several thousand rounds since. Now, some folks would have tossed the gun in the trash after that and bad mouthed it, but the accuracy of the thing keeps me stickin' with it.

I don't know what is the deal on mine, might have been a redesign of the recoil spring, but the new recoil springs are too long for mine and I found out I have to trip some of the coils off one to get it to fit my gun. I really don't know what's up with that. I have been tempted to buy, and might, a new nickel finish one just to compare how the spring holds up in it. I only gave 70 bucks for mine back when. I guess they've gone up. I probably should call them and inquire about the springs, but haven't since they work okay when trimmed a little. But, I think I will do that. I could get the answer over the phone. I don't shoot the gun all that often, but it has a spot, a niche in my battery.

I've yet to actually hit anything I've aimed for with the cowboy stuff :uhoh:

With either 410 loads, if I aim roughly a foot to the right some of the pellets hit what they're intended too :neener:

It's definately a 3 foot weapon. We were trying at 5 yards and it was just all over the place. Don't get me wrong, it's one of funnest guns I've shot...it's just not accurate what so ever. We did however shoot some clays with it. Took all the busted ones in the box and had my buddy stand behind me. "Pull" resulted in it being thrown 2 feet in front of me from over my head. Worked great :neener:

Hmm, well, I'm an accuracy guy, so I guess it's a good thing I passed on it. I have a Contender barrel in .410 if I wanna play with clays. I can actually hit 'em out to 20 yards, too. :neener:

For what it's worth, I've heard the more quality derringers (cobra, naa, and bond) are quite a bit more accurate...Might have to pick one of those up myself:eek:

Cobra? Isn't that the old Davis? That was pretty junky, not what I'd call "quality". Now, American Derringer, think it is/was, out of Waco were supposed to be decent and had a higher price tag. NAA's mini revolvers are little works of art and shoot pretty well, especially the ones with longer sight radius and the better sights like on the Black Widow.

I honestly don't have any expirence with Cobra, I've just beel told they are decent. Probably moreso than mine :neener:

once you get used to the Cobray side by side , you should be able to make decent hits on a full size target out to 50 feet , it took me awhile to be able to do it , but derringers are a challenge , not what I would carry for defense but provide a fun/ different challenge at the range.
