Got a little Pheonix Arms .22 Sunday, mainly for the lady to plink with while I play with the big guns in my sig :) I was considering it for ummm .... ridding the neighborhood of the unwanted feline infestation we are getting. I was thinking of the Calibri low-load cartridges that make little noise, but was worried that it won't cycle the action. Are there any other suggestions for loads?

just use those... i havent seen anything quieter but if your a good shot you only need one round then just cycle it by hand

If I remember right, and I might not, Calibri .22 cartridges don't have any powder in them and are just powered by the primer. No way would they cycle a S/A action, and are downright dangerous to use in a rifle -- the projectiles won't even make it out of the barrel. A good pellet gun would be better, IMHO.

You can buy sub sonic .22 shells at most large gun places. I've used them and they work but won't cycle a .22 semi rifle.

Phaetos. I think there is some confusion here. I am not expert, but . . .

Calibri are very quite and don't cycle actions in autos. These are primer only I believe.

Sub-sonics are loaded with power from 900 fps to 1050 fps. They will cycle many autos, such as both my ruger mark III, but are still pretty loud. Not as loud as high velocity loads, but still loud.

You might be able to shoot the Calibri as a single shot only if your PA.22 will operate as such, or pick up a little revolver for the you, uhmm I mean the lady.

cb shorts or longs are primer only & exit even my cz 452 28" bbl. they are used in some countries for in-door pest (rat) control. will not function an action of course. them or a gamo air rifle 1000+ fps works on tree rats very well out to about 40 yards.

I've used CB longs to dispatch troublesome rodents. They are very effective. I can't remember the muzzle velocity, but I think it's about 600 fps.

Don't use the Colibris on feral cats.

These are only primer-fired and have muzzle vel of at most 350fps.

You will only injure or maim the animal.

Just saw a discussion about this recently.
CB shorts and CB longs do contain powder and are nowhere near as quiet as Colibri rounds.
Colibri rounds have no powder charge and are around 350fps. Not enough power there that i would feel good about trying to kill a cat with it humanely.

Aguilla makes 'super colibri' rounds that do about 500-550fps which is more reasonable and i have heard is deadly on small rodents up to ~50feet.

Then there are standard 22 shorts, then 22LR.

So, to re-cap in a general sense what i have learned,

Colibri~300fps->Super Colibri~500-550fps<Now things get loud>->CB short~600fps+->CB long~800fps+->Short~6-800fps->long rifle~1150fps-1650fps or so. There are sub sonic variants of Long rifle that come in around and under 1000fps also.

I believe the link below has some good discussion on light .22 loads...

FYI, the CB shorts make far more noise out of a revolver than they do from a rifle. Significant difference.

I buy exclusively standard velocity solid non-jacketed .22 ammo. More consistent and accurate.

I have yet to find anything other than CCI Stingers or CCI Mini-Mags that work reliably in my Walther P22. Everything else is a crap shoot as to whether or not it cycles properly.
