One of the (if not THE) best revolvers ever built!! Strong, accurate and usually has an excellent action straight out of the box - a little heavy but that helps absorb the recoil. Sweet shooters with mag or .38spl loads. What barrel lenght and price are you looking at?

Close to revolver perfection. Available in 3, 4, 6, 8,3/8ths Bbl. 6 or 7 shot cylinders, porting is even available. Price ranges $350 to $425.

Price ranges $350 to $425.

Wow !!! What year was that ? You can't find a new one for that unless it's coming out of the trunk of a car and being sold by some guy named Guido.
Even finding a minty used one for $350 would even be a challenge in my part of the country.
You could probably snag a used one at auction for $350 but by the time you pay shipping and your FFL you'll still be over the $400 mark.
I'm not saying that it can't be found for $350, but it's just not the norm.
I just don't want Porky to feel he's getting ripped off if he's paying $400 or more.

Yeah I'd like to find that price on a 686 too. Around here they are running $550-600!

3 or 4 inches.

If you can find a 3 incher at a nice price buy it.
The 4 incher would be the most common and the 3 incher would be one of the most desirable.
Pretty much anything that S&W sells that's a 3 inch tube is always going to sell for more money. At least that's the current trend.

I bought a nice 586 at the gunshow this weekend for $350 total money from a fellow who brought it in to sell or trade.:)
I sold my 686 years ago.

I have a 686 6" and LOVE it.

It was my first pistol... never regretted buying it. If I remember correctly I paid 320 at a gun show in 2002. It was used and quite dirty, but once cleaned up it looks almost brand new.

Very nice gun. The 4-inch and 6-inch versions are great. If you can find one with chromed hammer and trigger, so much the better.

I've had my 6" for about 18 years and have never had a reason to regret it. I've probably put something like 8-10,000 roundsthrough it. Mostly .38+p, but a lot of full-house .357 too. It's still tight and shoots better than I can. As an aside, the Hogue monogrips are a great addition to this revolver.

Quite possibly THE finest combat revolver, especially in 4" variety. I still want a 627 though.

I purchased the S&W 686 with a 3". Shot 200 round through it and I love it. The salesman asked me why I would want to carry this gun. I told him as a retired police officer you don't take a switch to a gun fight. The 686 ending up on costing me $650.00 with tax. Like the trigger pull.

Got a 686 plus with a 4-inch barrel about three months ago; love shooting it. Even with really hot rounds, recoil is easy to control, and 7 rounds are better than 6 any day ... it's my favorite gun -- out of six -- to shoot. paid 650 for a new one and well worth it ...
