Nailgun--You've just had every chronometer user's nightmare! Congratualtions!
Shooting Chrony reccommends that you replace the supplied steel rods with something less resistant--then when (not if) you shoot the rods, the rod will break instead of breaking its plastic socket. Looks like you lucked out on that score!
Thinking that that was good advice, I took a thin set of wooden dowels, cut to same length as the steel rods, sanded their ends down so as to fit the sockets in the Chrony and the little screens, and that's what I use. Made up a couple extra dowels for when I shoot one @ the range.
So far so good.

Don't worry. They sell new ones cheap. I did the same thing to mine. I keep extras in my range bag in case I get careless again. The good news is it did not hit the chrono.:)

Thanks Guys :)
This happened a few days ago. I was testing out some hand loads that I had worked up for the wife's Smith 908. I knew (but forgot to remember that I knew) that the gun shot low and left. First shot hit the left rear rod.
Oh well... a quick call to the mfg. and the parts are on their way. Think the gal said $12. including shipping.
Poor chrony only registered one or two shots out of five after being wounded.
Smokey Joe, thanks for the tip about wooden dowels! That is a good plan! :)
I promise, I will try not to shoot it again. :D

Another suggestion. I use plastic drinking straws in mine. Don't have to sand them to fit, just flatten the end and manipulate it into the socket, absolutely no stress on the plastic if the straw gets hit, and a box of 250 is very inexpensive.

I used to tilt my chronograph so that the screens shaded the optical sensors. That not only put extreme stress on my tripod base plate ( I broke one that way ) but it also worried me that I would hit a rod as everything was tilted and harder to make a clean bullet pass. Imagine how it was for me with scoped rifles and an AR-15 with the triangle tilted 45-degrees!
I read somewhere that you could create a tent of wax paper and still keep the chrono fully upright. When the bright sun is very low I use the wax-paper tent and it works just fine. And I use wood dowels as well, especially for shotgun.
