I have the chance to buy a used reproduction 1851 Navy Colt .44 for $89.00.

Do you think they are $90.00 worth of fun??

That's worth $90 to me even if it's a wall hanger.

One of the guys at the blackpowder club I shoot with has one. He shoots his tons, and it looks like a blast. The odd time he even nails the 100 yard gong with it!

I shoot one of those more than any gun I own. Mine is a brass model and I just use it to plink. I shoot 25 grains as a standard load. At 25 yards it shoots about 6 inches high. That is a buy you wont find very often.

HuntCast,

If the one you have pictured is new and the steel frame than thats a great deal-GRAB IT! Even if its the brass framed version its still a great deal. Prices have gone up on cap and ball revolvers alot in the last few years. Even brass framed guns are going for close to $200 these days. Are you getting this via a private sale or from an internet site?

It's a used gun in my local shop. Someone traded it in on something.
I think it's the case hardened one by EMF. I'm going to look at it more closely tomorrow.

Great price!

Yes, the 1851 Navy is a great gun--I'd argue the best gun when it comes to balance and feel--the originals were in .36 but .44 ones are good too, more powerful (obviously) although the .36 ones are also very effective guns.

Just be sure (if you already know this I apologize) to use slightly oversized balls so they fit tightly, tight fitting caps (if they can come off while it's being shot from recoil, they're too big, I usually use #10's), and the risk of a chain fire should be quite low.

Check the lock up and timing and to make sure the previous owner knew the importance of cleaning properly after shooting. Great price

I have a New Army Model. It is a blast to shoot and cheap to do so. You can't go wrong at that price;) .

Thanks for the responses........ I really know nothing about black powder revolvers, and almost nothing about revolvers, lol. Just shot them some, never owned one.
Is there anything else I should look for mechanically when I check it out tomorrow?
The girlfriend walked in and said "You should just buy it while we have the extra cash."
I love that woman :)

"You should just buy it while we have the extra cash."

Let me translate that for you:

Best case scenario: "Ooh, that's nice. Buy that for me. MINE!" :)
Worst case scenario: "...so you'll overlook the new shoes I bought today." :neener:

Either way your a winner, though. Nice find!

HuntCast,

When you go look it over, look into the cylender cavities, the boreand the nipples for any rust. Then thumb back the hammer to full cock and make sure the cylender doesnt wiggle more than a millimeter or so. Then push the wedge out that holds the barrel to the frame out(or ask the shop owner to do it)after you return the hammer to half cock take the barrel off and the cylinder off. You will see a large pin that the cylender rides on, try to wiggle it. If it doesn't move thats good. If it wiggles at all tell the shop owner thanks very much but no thanks. If the cylender cycles and is tight and the cylender pin is tight and there is no rust than you have a gun worth buying.

Ever heard Of Ralph, Channing, and Sagola in the UP? How about Menominee's near Ralph with the Wind generators?

I used to deer hunt up there way back in the 60's. Was always glad to get to Iron Mountain, because I knew we were close. Long drive from Central Indiana, around Chicago and all the way thru Wisconsin. But it sure was fun once we got there. Took my first Bow Hunting Deer on Big Wheel Road in 1965.

I always wanted to buy the store in Ralph. I think it was the local grocery, mercantile, post office, gas station , etc. Are the big windmills still there or did Electricity finally make it everywhere up there? I miss that country. I used to hunt birds over nearer the Mackinaw Bridge in the Bird Country. Loved it too. Only then I lived Near New Era Mich. wasn't near the drive.
