arinvolvo

ANd I am sure it is gun related....otherwise, they will lock this thread.

The reason I ask, is because I was looking at my own screen name..."arinvolvo" And its history isnt all that interesting...My name is Arin, I drive a VOLVO....It was an email address I came up with when I got my first car (a volvo)...and it stuck.

But I realized...some people may misconstrue it, and think that I have an AR in my VOLVO..Which is sometimes true, but still not the real meaning of the screen name.

Anyway, there are a few of you with cool gun-related names....how did you come up with them? Is there something special about them?

My name is Cslinger and I am an alcoho........ooops wrong meeting.

I have done some writing for Palladium books for both Rifts the Roll Playing Game, the Rifter Magazine and other Palladium megaverse stuff. One of the books I wrote was called the New West.

In the New West there are futuristic gunslingers who are part man and part machine or cybernetic gunslingers. Cyberslingers or Cslingers for short. Hence my name.....Cslinger.

My wife is also on the forum and she goes by Sheslinger. So cute it makes you want to puke doesn't it?:barf: Sad thing is I came up with Sheslinger. Double puke huh?:barf: :barf:

gbelleh
June 9, 2003, 07:45 PM
My nick name is Gino Belleh, but there's a really stupid story about how that became my nick name.

See, in high school, my best friend (who is Italian) got the nick name "Guido" and it stuck (still to this day). So, I decided I wanted a cool Italian nick name too, so after watching "Out for Justice" with Steven Seagal (his character in the movie is named Gino Felino), I decided to call myself Gino.

Here comes the really stupid part.

I had this friend named Chris who had a really big, old pink Cadillac (no kidding) with a loud speaker system mounted in the grill. One day, we were driving past a girl's house who went to our school and she was practicing a drill team routine. She did a cartwheel just as we were driving by, and her shirt came up exposing her belly. Chris got on his loudspeaker and announced "EXPOSE YOUR BELLEH!" really loud.

After that, Chris would drive down random streets saying into his loudspeaker:

"If you build it...they will have a belleh, a belleh, a belleh, a belleh..."

Eventually, I added "Belleh" to the name "Gino", and there it was:
Gino Belleh.

June 9, 2003, 08:12 PM
my goal for .22 pistol match scores because thats what i can shoot in practice regularly and have shot the same in matches on the good nights but not consistently.

my best round since i started shooting target again was a 291 in practice

best slow fire in a 50 ft match was 96, too bad the timed fire was a fiasco. probably because i said to myself, "well, you got a 96 slowfire so now all you gotta do is RELAX and shoot your normal timed and rapid fire scores (95 is normal on both)

i think i relaxed a little too much

So its just to remind me of what i'm capable of and to let others know that i'm not that much of a slouch on the range...

TheFrontRange
June 9, 2003, 08:44 PM
"TheFrontRange" refers to that purple mountain majesty, the Front Range of the Colorado Rocky Mountains! I'm not from Colorado but I've had family out there since I was a kid. Colorado Springs is perhaps my most favorite spot in the whole world. (Forget that "perhaps"...it IS my favorite!) We (me and the wife and our three kids) all went out there last summer, drove the whole trip to and from Alabama...we had a great time! That was my ninth time out there.

To all you 'Springs residents on the board...HOW do you folks get any work done with the beauty of Pikes Peak and the surrounding mountains right there all day and night?! :)

At some point I'd like to relocate there. When that happens, I think I'll be roaming the Garden of the Gods on a weekly basis...and following that up with a regular trip to Fargo's Pizza!

Feanaro
June 9, 2003, 09:37 PM
Feanor was a character in the Silmarillion by J.R.R. Tolkien. He was a Noldorian Elf, who was basically the best craftsmen in the know world while he lived. He created the Silmarills(Hence the name of the book) which were so precious that the fate of the world revolved around them till they were lost.

He also had certain characteristics that I sometimes share. He was proud, arrogant, courageous, powerful (In character and combat) and head-strong. He was also know as the Kin-slayer, because he killed some of his own kind for their ships(This characteristic, I am happy to say, I do not share with him :)). He was also seemingly fearless, indeed, his charge straight into an army of Balrogs(remember that big thing at the bridge in LOTR? ) was his undoing. He had been called by many Feanaro, "Spirit of Fire". And true to his name when he died such was his passion and fire that his body turned to ashes.

I have always been very passionate about many things, been interested in the martial arts of every kind and I liked the character so I have always used this name.

bad_dad_brad means bad are my initials, dad because I am a dad, and brad because that is my first name (nickname).

Co-workers used to call me bad dad when I was raising three teenage boys (try it some time) and I had the habit of treating young miscreant men I had to work the same as my sons.

They are all grown up now thank God (my sons that is - the miscreants I have to work with still abound.)

Glamdring
June 9, 2003, 10:26 PM
Glamdring: from The Hobbit a book that I read a long time before I ever heard of Jeff Cooper. Then I read Cooper. He likes to label bad guys Goblins. Makes sense to me :D

Also read a short story Frost and Thunder about a guy from the bigdays of IPSC that gets dragged back in time long enough to help vikings using his cutomized 1911. The vikings called him Thor...and his friend from current days felt that guns should be named. When he comes back to the present he names his 1911 Mjolner (sp?) after Thor's Hammer.

Glamdring was a sword made to fight Goblins. The name is supposed to mean "Foe Hammer". And it is easier to spell :) than Mjolner.

Feanaro
June 9, 2003, 10:33 PM
The name is supposed to mean "Foe Hammer".

It does mean that, though it's slightly complicated. "1 Actually, the literal translation of glam is 'noise', not 'foe'. 'Foe-hammer' comes from glamhoth dring, 'noise-host hammer' - glamhoth is an Elvish term for Orcs. "

And yes, Elvish is a real language and yes there are people who can actually speak it. ;)

After the character in the poem "Rabbi ben Ezra" by the Victorian poet Robert Browning, which famously begins

Grow old along with me!
The best is yet to be!
The last of life, for which the first was made . . .

The entire poem pretty much sums up my philosophy of life. I first encountered these lines in Isaac Asimov's "Pebble in the Sky" while a lowly 7th grader, then discovered a copy of Browning's complete works years later in the Atlanta airport while waiting for a flight home from college. BTW, Robert Browning was husband of Elizabeth Barrett Browning, of "Sonnets from the Portuguese" fame (unfortunately no relation to either Mr. Barrett of .50 BMG fame or John Moses Browning:D).

Recon By Fire
June 10, 2003, 01:28 AM
A combat technique to locate your enemy while under fire is called "Recon by Fire". There are several applications for this technique.

1. Possible Ambush- If you are moving and suspect and enemy ambush ahead and are not sure of the location a quick "Recon by Fire" will get an undisiplined enemy to expose his position by movement or return fire. Once you identify the suspected position, put several members of your Team in an overwatch position, and have a small section open fire with 10 to 15 rounds each into the suspected position, then cease firing. If enemy moves or returns fire you have accomplished mission and can now fire and maneauver on the target.

2. In Contact position identifacation- Once you are in a sustained contact and need to ID the positions and types of weapons firing at you, you need a disiplined "recon by fire". Pick a suspected position and on a signal troops open fire with a "Mad minute" of 10-15 rounds each and then all freindly troops cease firing. Enemy troops will continue firing allowing you to ID their positions and weapons types, and then you can prioritize your fires.

Hand_Rifle_Guy
June 10, 2003, 02:10 AM
Mine's a leftover from TFL also.

I'm also known as "Target Guy", from DSP infamy, but somehow that seemed a bit...'inappropriate'...for a gun/shooting forum.

But I collect Hand Rifles as one aspect of my collection bug. That'd be handguns chambered for rifle rounds, or handguns that share fundamental characterisics with rifles, like a 16" barrel.

F'rinstance:

Springfield Armory S.A.S.S. conversion kit for 1911's, calibers .243, .308, and .358 Winchesters. All of these shoot and handle VERY differently, so I think of the as three different guns. That, and I got 'em spaced out over time, also.

A 16" .45 ACP barrel for that same Springfield Armory Milspec 1911. Goofy fun. Makes my 1911 do, like, 9 different things with all the rest of the different calibers it runs.

An AMT Automag III in .30 Carbine. (Started the whole thing, really.)

The Monster. You know, my STUPID gun. That's an ADC double derringer with 8" barrels chambered for 7.62 x 39. Here I am shooting the silly thing. (http://www.imageseek.com/sven/2003_04_19/7.62x39.mpg) Clip thanks to Sven and Hakan Grips! From this thread. (http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=17013)

With a bit of a stretch...;)

S&W 629-4 Mountain Gun. Put those insane Remington Yellow-box 180-grain softpoints in this thing, and it's DEFINITELY Hand Rifle territory.

The Taurus M-425 Tracker in .41 Mag. Medium-frame, FULL power. As the 629 above, with any factory load I've put in it.

S&W Model 1902, 2nd change, in .32-20. You shoot it, you know. Brilliant white flash, loud crack, respectable recoil. All this in 1902, no less!

My AMT Automag V .50 A.E. qualifies here, also. I said s-t-r-e-t-c-h...;) (Not that far, though. All you gotta do is shoot it. Then it's no question.)

A Traditions .50-cal Muzzleloader. 'Sgot double set triggers, fer cryin' out loud. I plan to run rifle-weight .44 or .45 caliber (350-500 grain.) bullets in sabots, one of these years. The thing's got a rifling twist of 1 turn in 20", that's faster twist than in my .45-70 Traspdoor Springfield that is set up for 405's! I have such dangerous plans...

Speaking of dangerous plans, I'm going to make a set of Howdah Pistols by cutting down a couple of those 12-guage muzzle-loading double rifles that Cabela's has. 1-1/4-ounce roundballs ought to be a barrel of monkeys, doncha think?

Of course, I definitely want all of those OTHER Hand rifles too, like T/C's of both flavors and all sorts of calibers, Lone Eagles, XP-100s, Ruger Hawkeyes, Pachmayr Dominators, Savage Strikers, That 16" Glock conversion I read about, Mechtec conversions that I can't own in my stupid state, Magnum Research BFR's Wichita Silhouette pistols, that $2500 Blaser pistol you can get in .375 H&H, an Anschutz Exemplar, ALL of those cool Taurus revolvers in calibers from .218 Bee up to .454 Casull, and any other high-powered single shot you care to name. Plus I need a set of SAA's in all the rest of the old WCF "dash" cartridges like the .44-40.

Hmmm. I best invest in high-quality wrist brace. Be nice if I could arrange to win the lottery while I'm at it. Hey, I can dream, can't I?

Sindawe
June 10, 2003, 03:07 AM
Sindawe: 2nd in command of the Nar, heriditary keepers of the tratitions of The Black Company in Xar-Gle. One of the few Nar to sign up with the Company after the disaster at Dejagore. Fell to the shadows on the Plain of Glittering Stone. Was in the service of the Lady, Lt. of the Company when commanded by Croaker, when the Company was in the Service of the nation state of Taglios in war against the Shadowmasters.

Derived from the Annals of The Black Company novels by Glen Cook

Picked up the handle years ago after re-discovering my attraction to The Dark Side, and realizing that the former handle (Valentine Micheal Smith) no longer fit my view of the world. Sindawe fits better my views of Honor, Duty and Service.

LiquidTension
June 10, 2003, 03:51 AM
Liquid Tension Experiment was a group of progressive rock GODS that got together and made two of the most amazing albums ever recorded (the second one being better than the first). No vocals, just pure odd-time goodness with some of the best playing to ever grace the world. I try to give them free advertising any time I can, they're just that good. IM me if you want some mp3s. IM name LiquidTension769.

John Petrucci - Guitars (Dream Theater)
Mike Portnoy - Drums (Dream Theater)
Tony Levin - Bass (Too many to list (http://www.tonylevin.com/discography.html), most notably King Crimson)
Jordan Rudess - Keyboards (solo at the time, currently with Dream Theater as well)

They stopped making albums after Rudess joined DT since 3/4 of the group was DT anyway.

My name is rather known, it's just my first and last name.

My other THR name, Gray Fox, is based on Gray Fox of Winter, a chosen "native" name. Also, Gray Fox is based on a Metal Gear Solid character, the code name for Frank Jaeger.

Kevlarman
June 10, 2003, 05:51 AM
Kevlarman, named after the miracle fiber from DuPont. When I was a kid, I was always interested in science. Kevlar really piqued my interest because it was so unbelieveable that such a thin fabric could stop bullets.

My AIM screen name, NomexBoy, was made along the same reasons. :)

winwun
June 10, 2003, 07:06 AM
As a buyer at the University of Tennessee, we had to have a password to enter the system. I chose win as mine. Early one morning the Director was in my cell and needed to use my terminal, and asked what my password was.

I told him, "win", and he was very impressed. "Oh, does that indicate your desire to be first in your endeavors?" "No," I replied, "It is short for Winchester, my favorite gun maker".

I lost points, but ask me if I gave a krap.

On THR, at least 6 letters were required, so in the interests of easy memory, I added the "wun" (one)

Fly320s, Hi, neighbor ! I live about a half mile from the Old Louisville Boat Dock.

SapperLeader
June 10, 2003, 07:28 AM
My screenname is pretty easy. Im a combat engineer in the US Army, and combat engineers have a leadership course that is our equivaliant of Ranger School(or maybe pre ranger). Its called the Sapper Combat Leadership Course. If you complete the course but fail something, your a sapper graduate. If you pass everything you become a Sapper Leader. Hence the screen name, out of 60 guys, I was one of four to finish the course and pass all the requirements, so i started using it as my screenname on most of my boards and accounts.

About two years ago, I was really new to owning a handgun. I had just bought a USP9...

Seeking affirmation on the wisdom of my totally "unsupervised" purchase, I happened to browse the net - and lurked - at the very first forum of any kind I have seen: the TFL. :D

I then made it a point to come visit it regularly, eventually joining it.

Hence, my alias then - and now...

Though I was a bit surprised that no one has yet adopted such a simple pen name... ;)

haukehaien
June 10, 2003, 09:01 AM
Hauke Haien was a character in a novel I read in German Lit class. (Der Schimmelreiter.) I liked the name, no one ever takes it so I can use it anywhere, and I liked the novel too. Hauke Haien lived in northern Germany and was in charge of building and maintaining the dikes that kept the sea out. He built a new one that was too large, it failed and he was cursed to spend eternity riding his horse through Germany. Sometimes I fell like I've been cursed to spend eternity riding a computer ...

I'm a "Romaphile" - Tiberius was the first of a string of famous "bad" emporers whose actions gave the whole imperial era an undeserved negative reputation. I wanted something not too obscure (cap't Kirks's middle name remember :)), so I just grabbed one and used it on several on-line fora.

When I first picked it, I had just finished re-watching the Masterpiece Theater mini-series "I Claudius" so so the Julian-Claudians where on my mind.

12 Volt Man
I am a huge Parrothead (Jimmy Buffett fan) and he has a song called 12 Volt Man. He told the story once that it was written about a guy who left the states for Mexico and lived in a place where all he had was 12 volt batterries to run his blender and cassette player. He made Margaritas and listened to Jimmy Buffett.
Any other Parrotheads here?

TrapperReady

"Trapper Ready" is a phrase often uttered on the trap field at the start of a round, or when getting to a new station during sporting clays. I have an affinity for little orange puffs of dust, so it seemed appropriate.

BTW, I really, really hope that Art Eatman's name is just his name. If not, I don't want to hear the story.

Henry Bowman
June 10, 2003, 12:00 PM
This thread is waaaaaay too long . . .

But, for the record:

Henry Bowman is the principal character in John Ross' book "Unintended Consequences." The book didn't change my way of thinking; it changed what I do about it. Before reading that book, I didn't know that I was part of the "gun culture" and didn't even know about TFL (and then THR).

Soon after, I read Ayn Rand's "Atlas Shrugged." All of the good names from that book were already taken and UC is gun-related anyway.

Who is John Galt?

Chuck Dye
June 10, 2003, 01:07 PM
Huck Finn was a pseudonym I used from junior high days in honor of Huck’s attitude toward the truth, which was flexible. Huck was not against telling the truth but thought the technique best used by those lacking the wherewithal to make up a good story. The spelling change I acquired by dint having the privilege of frequenting a drinking establishment that bears some resemblance to Callahan’s Crosstime Saloon. For a brief time there was a coin-op trivia machine on the bar. One slow evening, the owner and the cook and I were playing for free ("someone" having jimmied the case and racked up several dozen credits) when the three of us together achieved a record score. Disgruntled Dave, the cook, was driving the gadget and at the end of the game had the opportunity to enter a player name. Dave decided that I had contributed all of the correct answers (may have, but the effects of several Russian imperial stouts prevent verification) and entered my nick name with a twist. It stuck.

Nando Aqui
June 10, 2003, 01:11 PM
Although from German+Italian+Irish ancestry, I was born in Havana, Cuba. My given name is Alejandro, which I changed to Alexander when I became a U.S. citizen many, many years ago.

I am told that when I was about two years old, I entered a room where I wasn't supposed to be, or more accurately, at the wrong time. Anyway, since those in the room didn't pay attention to me, I yelled "¡Nando aqu*!"

Nando was what my Dad used to called me, and 'aqu*' means 'here' in Spanish. The phrase "Nando aqu*" is not grammatically correct, but it worked for a two-year old. Oh, by the way, I was instructed to leave the room immediately.

That episode and my saying "Nando aqu*" became sort of a family inside joke.

bd
June 10, 2003, 01:36 PM
Mine is not a happy story. It comes from a friend who is deceased. He coined my nickname, bd is short for "blackdog" and it is my token way or remembering him. He was a great guy, genuinely good guy with a very big heart.

Here is some background to help explain. He basically slipped in the shower and broke his neck and died instantly. He was only 33 years old....and left behind a 12 year old daughter....Saddest funeral I have been too lately in the past 5 years....

Anyway, his name was Jeff and was a very good close friend, ironically, when we first met, we hated each other, but then became very close when we found out our love for music and shooting.....we also worked together too....

God bless,

I'm the guy that always hung a nickname on someone. Lots of people have tried over the years to hang one on me with no success.

I go to gun school to learn to be tactical and the head man and I hit it off and become friends. He invites me back as a Range Officer and says I have to have a nickname. HE comes up with "Smoke". My brother-in-law returns with me to the next course and hears this and it stuck.

For clarification: I do not now, nor have I ever smoked, tobacco or anything else. I do not now, and only have a couple of times experimented with black powder. Go figger.

ArMa
June 11, 2003, 12:54 PM
Well I live in California so I have an affixation with AR’s. Since colt is so well known, I went to the next best thing (in my opinion) which was Armalite, took the “lite” out of it so it would be original, and then came out with Arma.

2nd Amendment
June 11, 2003, 01:18 PM
Obvious, eh? :D

Actually it's not. Years ago when I first got online ('95?) I hit political boards, almost always leftist ones...and made the mistake of using my real name. Ignorance is NOT bliss. Anyway one of the nuts, erm, fellow posters, decided to take things beyond the internet, finding out personal information, making threats, etc.

Long story short he wound up banned from that board, banned from his ISP and with the cops at his door and I left that board...only to return later with the one monicker I could think of that would absolutely infuriate the resident hoplophobic leftists the most. In one form or another, 2A, 2ndA, etc, it's stuck ever since. Only place I don't use it is a couple gaming sites where I'm Chimera or FMCAChimera, my name and rank from my favorite(and now defunct) online game, Terra

Gus Dddysgrl
June 11, 2003, 02:06 PM
My nickname is Gus and I'm a daddy's girl. I took all the vowels out of Daddy's Girl and got Dddysgrl. Plus I like to shoot daddy's(his screen name on here is perfessr) guns since I don't own any yet.

Gus is a longer story. Since I was born my daddy has called me squirt. When I took Latin in high school he made it Squirtigus. That's the Latin form of squirt(so he says). And then in Mexico on a missions trip he was yelling for me and got no response. He got lazy and yelled Gus. That's the time I heard him yell and came a runnin'. So it stuck. I am now any thing along those lines. (Squirt, Gus, Squirtigus, and my sis added Gus Gus.) I don't like the Gus Gus cause that's the fat short-tempered mouse in Cinderella. (I'm not fat)

So that's how Gus Dddysgrl came about.

One of two main names I use on the net and in the games...

TheMariner-because I'm a merchant mariner in training right now.. I come up for another sea run here in July...

the other is CrepitusMors, a not quite correct translation to latin, roughly, it is suppose to mean 'Noisy Death'. My brother, took teh name SilereVita (Silent Life) to be an opposite of me when we fight together online...

I picked my name after taking a solid casting and making an AR15 with only a Dremel and some files. Not an 80% casting, a 0% casting. Worked 16 hours straight to do it. Went through 5 endmills and pretty well wore out my Dremel.

Oh yeah, and this is the longest thread I've ever seen on THR. Neat.

June 11, 2003, 07:20 PM
I played college football in Canada during the mid 1970's. The team name? The GeeGee's (no, I'm not kidding! ). It is apparently a sort of French Canadian pet name for a team of horses (the team logo is a sort of horses head with a flaming mane, with the letters "GG" on it). The team colors are also G arnet and G ray. I just found out a few months ago that an old teammate even built a website devoted to our team of 1975, when we won the National Championship. That team is still regarded by many in Canada to be the greatest Canadian college football team of all time. Here's the link, if you're interested:

I used to roadrace a CB900F motorcycle. Well, not a stock one. It wound up being an AMA legal 1025 superbike. With the engine built by a Mr. D. Zickrick esq, who also used to build them for Mr. Wise, Mr. Spencer, Mr. Baldwin, et al at HRM. Mr. Velasco built the chassis & they all worked for Udo.

Took my name from Ovid. Faustulus was the farmer who found and raised Romulus and Remus -- to famous twins one of whom founded some famous city some where.
After reading the bloody thing in Latin in college, I just started using it for my screen name.
People at work simply refer to me as the prince of darkness.

KPersimmon
June 12, 2003, 04:12 AM
KPersimmon: No, it's not (necessarily) due to my sour disposition. :D

Due to a bad domestic situation between my birth parents, I was adopted by my grandmother and her second husband (both of whom will always remain my "real parents," my Ma and Pa.) I was the apple of my Pa's eye, the son he never had, and I was probably more dear to him than his own natural daughter. It was thanks to Pa that I have my great passion for the outdoors.
On one of our outdoors adventures in mid-fall, Pa and I chanced upon a wild persimmon tree. Taking two of the dark orange berries, he explained that persimmons were very bitter before the first frost fell on them, but since a frost had already fallen they should be very good to eat. He popped one in his mouth and nodded in satisfaction as he ate it and then handed me the other.
Well... I guess the frost hadn't hit my persimmon!

:what:

Seeing my reaction, Pa dropped to the ground and rolled in laughter. For years afterward, this would remain one of his favorite stories to embarrass me with.

"Hey, Bub!" he'd say. " You wanna persimmon?"

The initial K stands for kumquat, another fruit that Pa introduced me to, with equally hilarious results.

Anyhow, it's in honor of my Pa, who died in 1989, that I've taken the silly handle of KPersimmon.

June 13, 2003, 01:07 PM
I have this habit of very softly growling when something strikes me as stupid or when someone or something does something very annoying or perturbing.

Because of that trait half the planet calls me Bear. So the few screen names I have seem to be bear related with Kodiak being the most common.

M90A1
June 13, 2003, 02:28 PM
M90A1 is the model designation for a very rare Barrett 50 that I happened upon several years ago. They were primarily made for the east coast SEALS, but five more were made than the SEALs wanted. Those five were released to the civilian market. The model was later designated the M95 for general civilian consumption.

I think it means something like "correct name". I agree with Confucious, who is reputed to have said that before we can even begin to talk about anything, we must first call it by its right name. As in, "They're not bullets, they're cartridges!", "It's not an assault rifle, it's an ugly carbine!" , "It's not a light bulb, it's a lamp!" etc etc.
