How difficult is it to swap out a cylinder on a K-frame S & W (66 to be exact)? Is this something I could do at home in my workshop or do I need a professional to handle the job?

I just hate to see a blue cylinder on a stainless gun. it looks,..... odd.

Thanks for the advice/help.

Having shims available may be all that's needed .. to get the actual fit in frame. Only prob (maybe) is gettin the timing right. I have not done this so ....... bow to others with more savvy than I.

Switching revolver cylinders isn't a "do it yourself" option, unless you have the tooling and knowledge to do it correctly.
Cylinder and ejectors are NOT drop-in assemblies.

New cylinders assemblies are made over-length so they can be gunsmith fitted to the correct head space. Used cylinders are a crap shoot. They can can run from too long to too short.

Things really get complicated when attempting to fit a new cylinder, but keep the original ejector. New assemblies come complete as a cylinder and ejector unit. Thing go off the deep end when attempting to fit a used cylinder with the original ejector.

To be done correctly, you really need a milling machine to properly cut the ejector face to fit. Also, some cases you have to set the barrel back one turn and reset the barrel/cylinder gap, and re-cut the forcing cone.

Cylinder fitting CAN be done by hand, but it takes a very talented 'smith to do it properly.

I had two Taurus M66 .357 mags One Satin Nickel and one Blued

I was able to switch out cylinders and fire them no problem.

Either Taurus makes good stuff or I just got lucky.

Folks at the range were perplexed at the blued Taurus with the
nickel cylinder.

I told them it was "custom"
