Picked up my "new" (old) stainless delta elite today, and the guy behind the counter says that the factory recoil spring set-up is inadequate. If I shoot full power 10mm loads I will "tear up the gun."

Anything to this? Or just more gun store talk?

The early ones were over sprung not under.

You don't know how used it is so buy a Wolf 20lbs for an all round spring and put in a CP buff.

The original plastic guide rod and dual spring set-up from Colt was 23lbs.

I ran a full length guide rod, 20lb wolff variable rate spring and shok-buff (small plastic washer that fits over the guide rod, behind the spring to cushion impact of bushing into guide rod head) without any cycling problems and no undue wear and tear.

Coffee was lousy tho'... :D

The CP is a brand name and they last longer that Wilson and other brands, they are $1 each and will save your gun from a beating in the long run.

It won't make your coffee but think of it as useing a coster for your nice coffee table. :rolleyes:

The guy behind the counter was right. The big problem was the plastic recoil spring guide rod. It is not likely to last more than 1000 rounds before being pounded to pieces. The stock, dual spring set up is 23 pounds, which is a bit heavy. When I bought my DE, I put in a full length steel guide rod, a buffer, and an 18 pound spring for FBI loads and a 22 pound spring for full power ammo. I am thinking that the EGW flat bottom firing pin stop, a 25 pound main spring and a 20 pound recoil spring is a better way to set up a DE.

They work swell stock. My deltas have not had so much as a burp with the std setup. I recently switched over my Delta Gold Cup to a std 1911A1 spring guide and a 20# spring. Seems to work like a champ. No FLGR/Holy Spring Plug necessary unless your money is burning a hole in your pocket.

Heavier springs will batter the frame more than the hot loads. 20# plenty.

In the 10mm a full length guide rod is best IMO, not only does it add a little wieght up front, the spring with feel smoother and last a little longer. Well worth the $20.

Just shoot it and fix things if they go wrong. Next time you are in that shop wear ear plugs.
