Targets? What do use?

:D I am very fond of using playing cards for targets when I need to practice accuracy with my 1911 of choice. I like to do them at 21ft just to keep my PDW in tune. Sometimes I use little post it notes in vivid colors:D Which are no problem. I was working an IPSC/USPSA match and picked up a windmill set up.....the targets are set up like the blades of a windmill and go around like so.:)
In doing 22 action rifle stuff with a benchrest there are nothing more fun than golfballs or even dirt clods. The balls dance and the clods poof!:what:
What are your fav cheap targets to pplay with??:D :D :D

Paper targets; Midway USA printable target, make copies at work.

The place I shoot has a trash pit for bottles, cans and other fun stuff. If a pit isn't available, try filling Dixie cups with water & freezing them. Drop the ice cubes out of the cups & take 'em to the range in your ice chest. Nice reactive targets that don't need to be picked up.
I've also used tortillas for pistol targets, biodegradeable. Hone your skills & feed the birds at the same time.

- The staples that hold the target to the cardboard backing @ 7 yards are quite a challange if you don't take out the bottom ones first. I prefer a .22 Ruger .22/45 for this since larger calibers tend to knock out the staple without a good solid hit.
- Playing cards are OK. The card I like the best is the 5 of any suit. That gives me 5 targets on each card to shoot for. @ 7 yards.
- Shoot and see targets are good. I like to use the little dots that come with the targets as the targets.(?) If you use shoot and sees you know which dots I mean.
- Empty 12 ga shells @ 25 yards, suspended with a piece of dental floss. I like to "rock the shell", then finish it off by cutting the dental floss.
- .45 cal holes @ 7 yards. Sometimes I play a game w/myself, where I put a single .45 shot into a piece of paper, then see how many .22's I can put through the hole without hitting the paper. It's tough to run a whole magazine,,,,something I haven't been able to quite do yet.
- Empty .45acp cases @ 50 feet, on top of empty 12 ga shells, which in turn were on top of 3X 5 steel triangle plates. Run the .45 cases, then go back and run the 12 ga shells,,,insert a fresh magazine, and run the steel plates. A .22 works best since major calibers will knock the shell down with a hit on the .45acp case.

Paper plates are good. I figure if I can get all my shots in that 9" circle at any distance I'm doing alright.

I print out my own targets, except when at the range-
Why not use them at the range, you ask?
Well, my favorite target is a picture, of someone who's, well...
who is now a jr. senator 'representing' New York, if ya know who I mean. :neener:

I work in a Pharmacy,so I use pill bottles, the ones from the companies....hard plastic that doesn't break apart, just shows holes.(for back yard use)
also have used:pumpkins,oranges,apples,spray can,old grill,keg,old tv,the occasional chipmunk....
at the range I use IDPA targets.I get the old ones when they're too shot up to use at practice.
The pumpkin was the coolest.I just got my PT99-9mm and wanted to try out the hollowpoints I had.I stood like 20 ft away and shot it maybe 5 times.I was not impressed w/ the tiny holes it made.Untill I got close and realized the whole back of it was gone!!!I've kept hollowpoints in it ever sence.

Save paper from work and then print out my own on the back. I have about 50 different targets to choose from. Plus I use those I buy for body targets. PM me if you want me to send the files to you as a zip for you to print out your own.

I get the shoot N C targets and use them at distance for unscoped shooting.
Then I use the included dots (like Hal) in the middle of a paper plate or as paste-on targets. For rimfires, I put four or five dots on one plate at 25 or fifty yards.
I also have one of those metal gallery rimfire targets where you shoot four targets up and over, and then release them by shooting a fifth.

poker chips on a string for the accurate ones....red checkers work great too.for the evil black ones, just pop cans, assorted junk.set them up on a base of a hill and back up about 50 yards and just plink.clumps of dirt when i thought it was a groundhog.shot it several times and journeyed out to see why it didnt move.

I feel if you can keep your shots on a 9" paper plate at 50 feet, you are competent with a handgun. I work at a prison print shop so I also use 17.5 X 22.5" full size outline targets padded in packs of 50. The plates do just fine though even for rifle shooting at 100 yards. I would say sillowett but I'm too lazy to check the dictionary, I like my spelling better anyway.:D

I'm a paperplate kinda guy also. I also use the full size plates with a shootnsee at 50 and 100 yards when doing longgun work.

I shoot mellons, not for the same reasons...I happen to like mellons...I best not go there.:D
playing cards, 3" post it notes, tennis balls, Clay targets out to 50 yds., or so. I'm waiting on someone to discard a 'certain' book that just came out by a 'certain' Sen that used to be here but went to NY.;)
I do all this with 1911's mostly.
New Fun Game: Golf with a 1911, its a hoot!! I gave up golf 20 yrs ago, I 'shoot' really good scores this way. Holes in one are more common too.:D

Flanged drive axle shafts with the lug nut studs still in them.
Stick them in the ground and try to knock them over. Only a dead center hit on that little skinny shaft will do it.
And.............their invinceable with lead bullet ammo.

I work for a catalog company and we have started to carry some glasses that are made from the same material as bulletproof glass.
I'm trying to talk my boss into letting me take a set out to the range with a photographer and see how they do :)

AOL CDs
LOL, someone comes to our litle East Texas town once a month and leaves a box of those at the drugstore for free distribution. After I noticed that NO ONE ever takes them, I asked the pharm if I could have them. So, 100 nice, shiny new targets a month, complete with bullseye! With the added benefit of free cardboard and paper for firestarter in the burn barrel!:D :neener: to AOL!

Laptops are fun, you can leave in a box, shoot it and the mess is easier to clean;)
Only bad thing about AOL CD's...gets boring never seeing where you hit...always in the middle...having to aim for edges...just ain't the same (yeah right);)

Gawd I am borring....
All these cool things to put bullets in (well except for Trisha's EEEK!)
I use the PC to generate a quarter inch grid and then fill in 4 of them and shoot at the black square with the Jerry Rice (http://www.norcalprecision.com/) long-iron....
Around here there are painfully few places you can shoot ANYHTING but paper... it truly sucks.

Mostly IDPA targets and 6" steel plates at various distances and angles. I usually set up 5 steel plates and try to knock them down as fast as possible with no more than 7 shots; Mozambique on the IPDA targets. Don't have a timer to see how I'm doing it.

Variety is the spice of life:
In no particular order,
Paper Plates
Playing cards
Clay Pigeons
IDPA Silhouettes
Pictures of People (Binladen, Hillary, etc)
Fruit - Melons
turtles
Prairie Dogs
Computer generated targets (gotta love MS Publisher and the laser printer at work)
Bottles, cans, trash
Steel (poppers, plates, tombstones)
Ballistic Gel
There are some interesting ideas in this thread I'm going to have to try....

Hedge apples, are great at 200 yards. Really reactive.
Steel plates, paper targets, ( have one club member who works for a printing outfit, makes cases of them for us, using mistakes from other jobs), pop cans, golf balls, clay pigeons, and the occasional opossum who wanders onto the range while we are shooting! Deer and turkey are off limits though, and yes, they do wander around while we are shooting.:what:

you can cut dental floss at 25 yards?
Hal
June 11, 2003, 08:18 PM
Yeah,,but I gotta use a 2 hand hold and be standing.
Floss is some nasty tough stuff, and can take a hit pretty good. Sometimes 2 or 3 to cut it. I've tried twine and mono fishing line too, but both of them aren't as tough as floss.
Can't do it one handed "bullseye" style. <--workin on that though.
