XD-9 SubCompact Lockup

I was shooting off the bags at 50 yards and getting some impressive results.

Until the last round out of the mag hit about 8 feet high on the berm! :what:

Started "playing around" with the (unloaded) pistol after I got home and realized it will fire so far out of lockup that the barrel has actually begun to tilt. I can only imagine that 8 foot high flyer was due to this? Pretty sure it wasn't me. I was hitting the bull with boring regularity just prior to this at twice that distance (100 yards).

This gun only has 150 rounds through it so far. I've since done a detailed strip down and polished everything up nicely. Smooth enough to feel a difference. Hopefully this won't happen again and it was just a break-in issue?

First time I have ever experienced something like this. More than a little freaky. The recoil on that round seemed very harsh, hard to tell what exactly was going on with lockback occurring and seeing the dirt splash so high simultaneously. Anybody have an alternative explanation to share?

I learned early in my shooting career (a year ago) that no gun can be considered broken in until at least 500 rounds have gone through it and it has been cleaned several times.

Thanks for the comeback -

Hehe, that's pretty funny Zenon :)

Flyer - I really think it was due to the newness/tightness of the gun if that is even what happened. The slide probably just stopped short of full lockup when chambering that last round. Maybe the cartridge hung up on the magazine lip slowing the slide down? Could have even been an out of spec cartridge? I'll keep an eye on it next time. I'm betting that polish job on the internals makes a difference in how well it feeds a round.

When pressing rearward on the slide the trigger will actuate the firing pin up to the point at which the rear of the barrel begins to separate from the breech face but not after. This looks to be approximately 0.25" of rearward travel. I don't think this allows for any unsupported case. I'm thinking this is how they're designed? It would be nice to know if other's XD's do this. Anybody care to check

I noticed one other thing which I neglected to mention. Some of the brass was very black with soot, not many, just a few of them. Don't know if that is a significant observation or not?

Kaboom huh? Haven't heard of XDs being prone to that malady, nor the 9mm cartridge for that matter. I might have the brass? I look hard but never can find them all. Some of what I pick up is left by others. This one shell probably ejected all the way to China. ;)

Just looked at mine, it goes CLICK with the slide about 1/8 inch back, but not more. I used the Pencil Test, whereby one first makes sure the gun is unloaded and inserts a pencil eraser first down the bore (did I mention after first making sure the gun is unloaded?)

After making sure the gun is REALLY unloaded, pull the trigger; depending on the condition you want to test, the pencil will either fly out or not. In this case the gun went CLICK but the pencil stayed in place with the slide back 1/8 inch.

Of course you do all this with the gun unloaded.

I believe the XD has a firing pin block safety connected to the trigger and shouldn't fire unless fully locked up.

I've never heard/read about this happening with an XD - not that that means it didn't. You might post over at www.xdtalk.com and see if anyone over there has any helpful comments to offer.

Good luck
