I hate to ask, but a friend of mine stumbled on a mint condition 25-2, 6" barrel, target revolver. It is a perfect specimen of S&W craftsmanship the bluing on this gun takes the breath away. Anyway I know several of you guys have a handle on this question and I appreciate the help. The serial # is N7597**. He even got the original box with it.

Another question is on the grips. From the description of the originals I'm guessing they are S&W target grips, not "coke bottle".

It should be a 25-5 with that high of a serial number.

I saw it myself, it really is a 25-2. Maybe it is a mystery better solved with a letter from S&W. I suggested it to him and explained the benefits. Anyone else?

Smith & Wesson's dash numbers represent an engineering change in the model that in some ways effects part(s) interchangeability from earlier issues. But while they come out with a change (and new dash numbers) older semi-finished frames remain in stock, and may be serial numbered later - just to drive collectors up the wall. I have owned several S&W revolvers that were made either before or after they were supposed to be. :banghead:

To be sure about this particular model 25-2 you'll have to get it lettered by Roy Jinks. The shipping date may tell the story.;)

The M25-2 ran a long time. Most (if not all) M25-5 were .45 Colt models.
