I live in Kalifornia and will be gifting a Maryland resident with a Ruger Single Six revolver. What hoops will he have to jump through to legal take posession of this gun by mail? Thanks...

Has to be sent to an FFL holder in Maryland, who would then do the paperwork for the transfer.

It was my understanding that in Maryland there was other requirements that the recipiant has to comply with. Do you know what those requirements are? Thanks...

Don't try to make it a surprise. The MD resident should contact his FFL dealer, and have him send a signed copy of his license to you. You can then ship (not mail) the gun to the MD dealer for transfer to your friend. Unless CA law says otherwise, you can ship the gun via Fedex or UPS without going through a dealer on the CA end.
Enclose your name and address in the package, along with the name of the person who is the actual recipient, and enclose a copy of the recipient dealer's FFL. Have the original "wet signature" copy when you go to ship the gun, but do not let the carrier have it; have a copy made for them, and keep the original for your files.
All of which is predicated on the assumption that your friend in MD does not have a criminal record or is not otherwise prohibited from owning a gun, and that the gun is not stolen. If any of those problems exist, shipping the gun would be a waste of time.
