Tubb's Final Finish report

I've been trying to wring the most accuracy from my XP-100, in 7BR, that I use for silhouette competition. I played with loads extensively, and settled on a load that my gun likes. I presently get about 1.5 MOA groups (from the bench) with Bo-mar open sights. I have always noticed that the factory Remington barrel is a little rough, and fouls rather quickly. I just loaded up ten of each #3,#4,and #5 Final Finish bullets, (the three finest grits, not using the two coarser grits), and will fire them this weekend, following the directions to the tee. This will be the first time I've ever tried this treatment. Results will be posted shortly thereafter.

From what I've read, the TFF pretty much just erodes/polishes the throat and doesn't do anything to the bore. A better/cheaper solution is to use JB non embedding bore paste on a patch wrapped around a worn bore brush. At least then you can polish the entire length evenly and without copper fouling added to the mix.

Fatelvis--I for one will be EAGER to read your first-hand report of the effects of using Tubbs Final Finish bullets to polish a bore. I've read a lot of opinion, but no actual results.
Best of all possible worlds: A miracle occurs; yr bore becomes a glass-smooth tack-driving machine.
By all means, follow the directions.
And good luck.
And we await yr results with bated breath.

Rifle handloader magazine did a review on TFF several years ago. All bores were inspected with a hawkeye borescope prior to using the TFF. All rifles exhibited throat erosion and no improvement in accuracy or rate of fouling. Manual bore lapping was also used. The borescope showed the polishing was even and didn't appreciably wear the throat.

I'm with rockstar on this one. The polishing compound on the bullets is worn off before the bullet reaches the muzzle. Then you have the carbon fouling from the powder after each firing. The throat takes the brunt of the abuse. I would use a tight fitting jag and JB compound and polish away.

i have tried final finish on 2 rifles, and the results were very poor.
in an 8x57 mauser, the result was so bad i just re-barrelled the rifle.
in a 7 rem mag the product made no discernable difference in either accuracy or velocity.
neither rifle was appreciably easier to clean after the final finish.
as a rabid, meticulous handloader, i chased the advertised result for a long time, changing powders, bullets, etc until i finally gave up. i wrote an extensive, group-by-group story on the stuff, complete w/ chrony results, etc. on another forum. i'll check if it is archived, and if it is, i'll provide a link.
