List YOUR 10 favourite guns!

Hello from Finland again! I for one see guns as tools primarily, and as any tool they have a funtional beauty.
I often look at the pictures of guns that I have downloaded, not just because I dream of living in a place where I could own some of them (wallet allowing), but because there is a certain beauty to them. Anybody into revolvers looking at say a Colt Navy, can but be in awe of it's functional beauty.
Threfore, and with the cunning plan to get pics of you lucky US gun owners, I here declare for all participants to list say ten (not a binding number, just list your favourites, but in moderation, say that you can list some reason for each pic) favourite beauty's. Rifle, Revolver, Semiauto, SMG, if it's a one man apparatus, let's hear of it!
Here are my humble and probably too fastly thought of candidates:
1. Colt Navy. Imho, the most beautiful cowboy gun, something about that barrell meeting the otherwize 1800 century's rounded features makes it my fav six shooter (or were they five). And now you can get working replica's, which take a multitude of modern cartiges! (try: www.cimarron-firearms.com).
2.The 'Centucky 50cal', I do not know the exact name of this gun, but it's of the kind that you see in the film 'The last Mohican' with Dainel Day Lewis, or in 'The Alamo' the new version, these were truly great guns, and I belive spurred the next candidate into existence some 20 years ago?
3. The Barret light 50. I saw a good pic of Royal Marines handling this amazing gun, and it's beautiful, deadly as anything, but beautiful...
4. The Lee Enfield. That ww1 style model where the barrel doesnt come out of the wooden grip/covers. It was just so functional, exellent gun as it was used for over 50years as the British army's rifle. And it made an exellent sniper rifle too.
5. The Mauser 'broomhandle'. Yep, this is the teutonic gun for me, it just looks so right, I love it!
6. The US ww2 M1(I hope that was right), carbine.
This is THE carbine for me, it looks beautiful, and like a perfect all rounder. I would love to have one on my dream farm/ranch...
7. The Browning Hi Power. I have been to one of the many threads dedicated to this seminal gun, that has made so many follow up guns, a true benchmark and beauty just like the second gun which is...
8. The AK 47/74. This gun, is beauty and the beast. Such deceptively beatiful curves and a good mix of metal and wood, but inside a truely genious of simpliciy and lethality, it's 'children' include the Israeli Galil and Finnish RK-62 systems, but the original is the most good looking!
9. The Sig-Sauer 226. If one is looking for functional beauty, then here it is, a great gun to shoot, and nowadays, looking like something almost from blade runner. But the new SAS carry models have gone 'retro' and feature feminine shapes and wood, a great gun anyway...
10. I fretted away for this one, and It's a tie between the Colt Python 357 in four inch barrel, and any model of the Browning Buckmark 22lr, which is very similar to the Ruger model 22lr. I need no words for these two do I???
Anyway, I know there is so many more I would have loved to list, but hey, must keep somekind of compactness for interests sake eh?
Hoping to hear from my friends in other countries!
And I'll chuck in a fiew good pics of any gun that make's me feel good just now, possibly an AR-15, as they are cool and should have made the list.
Yours truly: Mr Poundr :)

Threfore, and with the cunning plan to get pics of you lucky US gun owners
sounds funny when you say that. I guess alot of people in the US take for granted. We all are making a big commotion over an "assault" weapons band and such, even though alot of countries dont allow firearms at all. Reading something like what 17pndr really makes me think and realise how lucky I am.
Still, this whole AWB is a load of crap.

First of all, thanks for the Deer Hunters thoughtful words!
You might understand how frustrating it is as I have no criminal record, and yet, I cannot go and get the gun I shot probably thousands of times when I was fifteen years younger in the army! It just doesnt figure.
You guys are lucky. but If I ever get there, one of my musts, is buying an AR-15 from either Armalite or Panther, or Rock River or Kel Tec, that is one absolute dream of mine.
Do I understand that they want to ban these now?
And what about on of my favourites of all times the ww2 US carbine (is it an M1, or another name nowadays? Help please!)...
Also, I notice that you guys have signatures, those small texts that always come onto your messages end. I tried to find the place to place my own, but couldnt, any help, links???
Anyway, I'm glad to see good oppinions, and very glad that the CZ got there, I felt guilty of leaving it out, but as it's really a Hi Power, in a European mold, I thought 'just put the original, why is Browning so 'small' on handguns nowadays by the way??? It's a classic gun maker, one of the greatest, aside Colt, S&W, Enfield UK, Walther Germany, Izmash Russia ect...
By the way, any pictures of your fav guns would be greaaat!!! Here are some more of my favs! He, he... ;)
p.s. I was reminded, yep, the M-14 is just soooo, well, I think I put a picture of this great gun (wouldnt you like to see a good shoot off between the m-14 and the FNfal? That would be something, both are really complements to each other)! Any good FN fal pics or M-4s, or the good new Beretta's that are hitting the market. (say, what's that new rotating barrel that the Beretta storm and a couple of others have, where the barrell doesnt move with the recoil action)???
So many questions, and you US guys are the ones who usually know!
As I have asked so many questions I guess one more wont hurt...
What is the difference between a bantham shotgun and a normal one??? And are the moder semi auto shotguns as reliable as pump auto's (we had really mean ones in the army, but no sights! I never got that, even rudimentary ones would have improved my shots which always went high, but give me an rk, or anything with sites, and I was doing pretty good I must say, so any answers 'and pics'

Here's mine in no particular order, except #1 (and it varies depending on my mood):
1) FN FAL
2) 1911
3) Garand
4) 1873 Winchester
5) 1874 Sharps
6) Swede Mauser M96
7) Springfield Armory M1A
8) Colt SAA
9) Colt Python
10) Ruger Mk II
wouldnt you like to see a good shoot off between the m-14 and the FNfal? That would be something, both are really complements to each other
All ya gotta do is ask and stop by...you can shoot mine my FAL and M1A all you want. I make it over to Denmark all the time for work...the least you could do is stop by my place :)
So 17pndr, for your viewing pleasure (like I said, stop by and you can shoot any of these)

So, really, all I did was look around my room and list what I could see, except for the red label, which I don't actually own. Kind of a cheaters way out, but there are so many guns that I think are cool that I don't own, it's to hard to pick favorites. At least 5 of the above guns would probably make an all time favorite list anyway, so I am not cheating that badly...

I don't think I can list ten but I will try. I can list a few that have paid for themselves, been true keepers, and have been used as real tools in real life experiences.
I own many more than ten, but these have been the most useful and economically the "best bang for the buck".
Ruger 10/22 - Most fun, cheap to shoot, and has put food on the table.
Marlin 39A - See above (I switch between the two)
Benelli M1Super90 12Gauge- By far the most used and best $ spent. Taken deer, ducks, rabbits, grouse, pheasants, and more. Not so much geese. See below.
Benelli Nova Pump - This used to be my main shotgun before the M1Super90, but at 9 pounds it got a little heavy for upland hunting. It has a 3 1/2" chamber while the M1 only has a 3" so I only use the Nova for geese now. I hunt geese in a boat so I don't have to carry it on long walks and the 3 1/2" gives me the advantage needed to take geese clean.
Smith & Wesson Model 642 - Best everyday, everywhere you go self defense gun. No more explination required.
Smith & Wesson Model 66 with Marlin 1894 .357MAG partner. Count this as one. If you have the skills, there is really not much you cannot acomplish with this combination.
Up to six now...??? hmmmm.
Glock 19/23 OR 17/22 Depending of caliber choice/size. Regardless, I know this is a great platform. Some say the Glock is a non-userfriendly weapon system for a noobie. I disagree. I carry a 23 daily.
The 1911 Platform - Definitley a favorite. Worth a whole new thread(considering the amount of makers out there). That being said, I have retired my Kimber Pro-Carry for a Glock. 1911's Rule, but plan some time to baby them. I'll leave it at that.
Room for two rifles.
I'm stumped now.
Probably a good quality bolt in .308 and something in the line of
an AK or AR.

Great pics! Absolutely great!
First of all, is that old looking short shotgun meant to be like that or has some cowboy in the day, shortened it himself???
And as for the collection of 'IAMIAN'.... Well, words are not enough really. AAaaamaziung!!!!!
God , I wish I could have a go on at least half of those guns!!!
The AR, and the M1 and M14 being absolute musts, oh and the FN-FAL. and ... Well you get the picture, I wish I could shoot them all! (Does that good looking cowboy gun shoot factory made ammop, or do you have to make or have made your own)??? I would love a Cowboy classic, which is shooting some factory made slugs. I hear they still make the ammo that the Colt peacemaker used, what was it's nomination again?
Anyway, thanks for the imput, keep 'em coming!

I sympathise with Briky's list! Now, as shotguns are conserned, I must tell that I know nothing.
We did shoot what was called an 'Assault shotgun' in the army, it was pump auto, all black (we trained agressive building and room entry, so you can imagine that one guy would have a shotgun), it fired about one and a half dozen rather large pellets, that would rip a car tire hanging from a rope to shreads on the point of hit from about seven-ten meters... No sights to talk about, my aim was always high... (meaning the guy would have got a headshot every time)!
But, as I said, we only trained a bit, just like we trained a bit of Suomi smg, a check lmg firing ak-47 ammo in a belt, two sniper guns, and a sten, but our primary weapons that we really shot a lot with were the rk-62, and later the rk-62 with folding stock, and the FN-9mm Hi Power copy with ten round clip.
So, what does gauge mean? Yep, I do not know, I just looked at the stylish shotguns in the new Ruger catalogue I ordered, and tried to look if the 12gauge was thinner barreled than a 20gauge, no seemed the same, the length was stated in inches, so what is a gauge???
Also, I read in a guns and ammo mag article that people are loading too agressive loads for home defence, apparently people are going for 12 pellet loads that can penetrate walls!!! Not so good if your daughter is in the next room and you miss eh???
We, used a version of what are called 'wolf pellets' I belive, and they have 16 to 18 pellets in them, and this was the army's heavy stuff!!!
So, I belive that a 20-30 pellet load is good for home defence, it's also a bit more forgiving from a longer range imho...
Still, in our day (1990-91), there was only lead pellets, now I see tungsten and all kinds, I see those one slug things, that are aerodynamically made to fly 100meters straight!!!
Well, I'll put some pretty pics so that somebody will take mercy and explain the gauge thing to me...

That's the Croatian RT-20 semi-recoilless. Yes, pretty darn cool. One of the highest power-to-weight ratios for an anti-tank/anti-material gun, with only the Gustav m/42 full-recoilless 20mm doing better.

Cool, over $100,000 these days in the U.S., and wildly impractical in full-auto.

You mean, "Heckler & Koch"? They made the P7M10 in .40 S&W, but I don't think they ever made one in .45 ACP.
Luger in .45 (original)
Very expensive in the U.S. again, but why a Luger?
Quad 20mm German Flak for my garden (in case a XXX Helicopter wants to land)
There's a few privately-owned Flak 30/38's out there in the U.S. I've got some of the original Nazi ammo in my collection, as well as a 20-round mag. Pretty much a longer version of the Solothurn S18-1000 mag (I've got one of those), but of course not interchangeable at all with the Lahti M/39 mag (I've got one of those mags as well...).
With a quad AA setup, each gun running around 600 rpm, you'd need four or five of your buddies running around to keep those 20-round mags going!

Thompson 1927 machinegun, they had to ban them so they must be great!
1898 30/40 Krag, helped Teddy take that hill!

A pak-40 75mm German anti tank gun...
Nice gun. Big brother of the 37mm Pak 38.
Still, would love a good Lewis gun,
I've always liked the Lewis - very simple design. If it weren't for the mysterious animosity of General Crozier, Colonel Lewis' gun would have helped end the Great War sooner.
or the Dekjatyeff (sorry, still can't spell it) lmg,
Degtyarev? aka the RPD? Some say it's the most practical LMG ever made...
and a Maxim gun,
I would expect you, of all people, to prefer the simplified, more compact Vickers version! :p Although those solid brass Vickers tripods feel like they weigh a ton! :cuss:
Very reliable guns. They really don't build them like they used to... Eight Maxim guns at the Somme killed about 60,000 charging British soldiers - eight percent of the entire British army - in one hour!

FN FNC - a FAL in 5.56. I like the looks of the FALs. Like the low recoil/price of 5.56. Also takes AR mags.
http://world.guns.ru/assault/as24-e.htm
Thompson, 1928 model with the C-drum - no honest man needs less than fifty rounds in his submachine gun.
American 180 - magazine capacity alone gives the VPC cold shivers - capacity's over 200 rounds with some mags. That's enough rounds to take on dozens of squirrels, Russian paratroopers, or to thin out mosquito hordes a bit.
Walther 2000 - it's got a new look with style to it.
Baby Browning - tiny size and a neat gun. Classy.
1911A1 - so many accessories for it - lasers, conversion kits - and it's a great natural pointer for me... extremely practical. And fun.
CZ 75 - everybody needs at least one high-cap 9mm.
CZ 83 in .32 - a high-capacity mousegun. I like having a lot of bullets.
Kel-Tec PLR-16 - another 'give-the-Brady's-a-fit' gun. Shorter than any SBR that I've heard of, while not being nearly as expensive. Takes AR mags, also. Great wilderness pistol, I reckon.
Webley Mark VI cut to .45 ACP - Europeans seem to have had major issues in getting a revolver to look right to American eyes. Look at the Nagant, for example. The Webley looks like a revolver ought - tough and rugged. The Webley's just dripping with character - from the big stirrup latch and automatic extractor to that hexagonal barrel. I love it.
Honorable mention: FN Five-Seven. If they came out with an all-steel model, I'd love it - just a matter of looks, not of distrust of polymer.

To my esteemed gollegue aka 'The filthy guy', I like your oppinions, and I'm very jealous about your helicopter, perhaps if I come to the US, and happen to be in you neck of the woods we can go for a ride, after going to do some shooting on a range on my dime??? :)
But about the ww1 battle of the Somme, you have it a bit off old chap, the British army suffered almost (just under a fiew hundred), 60 000 CASUALTIES!
Now, you probably know that casualties is a word used for KIA, MIA AND WIA, THAT'S, killed, missing in action and wounded in action.
I have to 'dissapoint' you, in the fact that the actual KIA figure was 20 000, and the rest were mostly wounded and some missing in actions, that is about 40 000 wounded.
This mirrours a ususal breakdown of casualties in modern war, you tend to get about two to three wounded for every killed, ofcourse especially in ww1, many wounded died later in hospital. Unlike nowaday's.
And you are mistaken that it was 8 Maxim's, for even if it was the big killer after the artillery in ww1, the front of the Somme was tens of miles, and there was more than eight mg's there, and surviving riflemen too, I know, I have read a couple of books on the Somme, one was over 500 pages thick!
And some Brit infantry got into the german trenches, and exacted their revenge on the Germans there, actually although MOST of the casualties were in the first hour and a half, the total figure of 20 dead and 40 thousand wounded is the toll for the whole day... And one Scottish remains of a Battalion that had got through the killing fields, continued to remain in their bit of captured trench for almost two weeks, until starvation and their ammo ending forced them to give it up and surrender. Also, modern re examination of the battle of the Somme, which lasted about two and a half months, and resulted in about similar end total casualties for both sides, that being about 350 000 each, and yet strangely the total figure for the Somme, on both sides is one Million men as casualties in three months, from these about 80-85% were British and German, the rest were French, and the whole attack, was pulled as a mainly British event, because the French were in the similarly hellish battle of Verdun, put these both together, and you realize that the German high command was not happy after the 1916 battles, even if the French and Brits had suffered near a half million casualties each, the Germans had suffered double, and they had the Eastern front taking it's toll too!!!
Just so that people get the right impression. But as I said, in essence you wer e right.
btw, the Finnish army still used the maxims in it's heavy companies in ww2... As did the Soviets, and to a lesser degree the Brits and the Canadians, in defencive work, it was a honey, but that tripod, that wasnt nice to carry!!!
Thanks anyway for the reminder! :)
Mr Poundr.
p.s. as I'll be posting ww2 guns this time as my pic gift (where are your pic gents)? ;) I thought that anobody into ww2 would be interested in this site: OH, and I put the ULTIMATE GANSTA GAK pic existing, guess which? :D

Hmmm... did you actually check the link? I don't have a helicopter - I've got a Bofors!
But about the ww1 battle of the Somme, you have it a bit off old chap, the British army suffered almost (just under a fiew hundred), 60 000 CASUALTIES!

You are indeed correct! My original source said "casualties". I made the erroneous assumption that meant KIA, since the preceding paragraph mentioned that 11,000 men a week died on the Western Front alone, and that Maxims (of various flavors) were responsible for 90+ % of the 31 million dead of WWI.
And you are mistaken that it was 8 Maxim's, for even if it was the big killer after the artillery in ww1, the front of the Somme was tens of miles, and there was more than eight mg's there, and surviving riflemen too,
WRT to only eight Maxims - again I was misinterpreting the source, which mentioned that there were 8 Maxims at Somme that averaged over 120,000 rounds each and were still running fine at the end of the battle with no appreciable wear. I had assumed these eight guns firing a total of 1,000,000 rounds had to account for a substantial portion of the 60,000 casualties - that would be only one shot in every 15 or 16 fired hitting a different soldier. But you are correct - there had to have been many, many Maxims at Somme.
I've never fired a Maxim, but I have shot a friend's Vickers. All you have to do is give them bullets and water and they'll shoot forever!
I'm also kinda curious about the effectiveness of artillery during trench warfare... most of what I've read seems to imply that it wasn't very effective at infliciting casualties.
FWIW my guess is that disease killed as many soldiers as artillery did.
Just so that people get the right impression. But as I said, in essence you were right.
Thank you very much for the history lesson!
BTW the BAR in the pics you posted is another classy piece of heavy iron - is it yours?

The question of artillery is ambiguous in ww1, at first it was the maxim and rifle that were the big killers, but as the war progressed and the sides started to make more and more Artillery pieces, then at least during the Verdun bloodbath, it was the French who recognized that it was becomming an artillery mans war, and forbade more costly attaks, where the germans poured indirect fire from their howizers, thus making it a double risk, bullets and circa 100mm arty!
Read trhe book called: The myth of the great war, by- Mosier, and you will get a good idea of how the artillery developed into a big killer, and took its place as the number one, so that in ww2, about 70% of casualties were artillery caused and 30% from firearms, ofcourse this depended, in Staligrad, the big killer was the smg, and in the Tali-Ihantala defencive battle of 44, where the Finns finally managed to stop the Russian great attack, the artillery was credited to have been the crucial element in the defencive victory... In Normandy, the Canadian army surmised that three in four casualties were from mortars or Artillery...
Anyway, if you have fired a ww1-ww2 Vickers maxim ( maxim copies as the Vickers maxim, if you mean you fired that gun, then you can say you have fired a maxim, actually Hiram Maxim was living in Britain during ww1, and was in a business collaburation with Vickers at the time, so the Vickers maxim is certainly as Maxim as a Maxim can be)! :)
Otherwize, I appologize for understanding your writing somewhat wrong, we seem to have the same knowledge.
And, I would love to have a 'go' on a Bofors! Is it the classic 40mm??? Does it work?? Anyway, something truely fancy to have, a true military history gem!
Got any pictures??? :)
As, usual, I'll try to get the people here to share pic's of their fav guns (seems like i'm the only one, well, I hope some of you will put pics, even if you dont own the gun, think about us poor EU people, who have sometimes no chanche of owning a handgun 'like in the UK'!!! ).
MR POUNDR.
P.S.
The last pic, I have listed as being an 'AR-15 and a FN-fal, but the latter looks like somekind of H & K assault semi auto rifle, with supressor. Sorry about that!
