Just how durable is the Smith model 500? I have heard comments that some people have fired less than a cylinder full of rounds and the gun came apart  . If anyone owns one and has fired a LOT of rounds through it, please comment.

I don't own one but my shooting buddy owns two and we have fired a couple hundred rounds thru them. One is a 8" and the other a 2.5" :what:
Have shot everything from 325 grain barn burners to 700 grain custom cast bullets at 1100 fps. Not a problem as yet, both are still tight and shooting good, and no inadvertant lock problems while shooting.

The folklore that is becoming of that gun is like Rod Stewart lyrics: “Oh! No! Not again!”
I guess, that the mysticism about it? It’s only been out since 03’!
One would think it grows legs by itself and has a mind of its own, looking for people.
While you hear about it blowing up, because of reloading mishaps, it’s not the gun. It’s pretty strong…The cylinder can withstand 75,000 psi? Don’t hold me to that. It would even make the Gov. of Calif. envious.
Just think of it (500 magnum) as a race car. Shooters are trying to push the envelope (like using NOS in sports car).
Sometimes, one just tears up that manifold... These are the times you wear that helmet! Maybe, it’s a mis-calculation on the reload….
To me it’s a solid gun. Never had a problem with it. I tried UltraMax, Winchester, CorBon, Hornady ammo. Other than UltraMax (325gr. Un-burnt powder issues)) had no problems. Have not tried HSM (which I have on hand) or Double Tap ammo. Which I will be trying soon, before getting into reloading again (just need the dies). How many rounds I shot through it? I have no idea? I don’t even remember what I had for dinner last night?! More or less remember how many rounds I put down it?!
Oh! One more thing, don’t worry about the barrel. You…. Will Not have to replace it, after a couple of ‘ thousand rounds. If one is going to worry oneself to death about wearing out the barrel…..Don’t shoot it. Yea, just buy a second one, as a stunt double. This way, you don’t put wear on the first one.
I go hunting with it, to the range, carry it concealed (4 inch). Makes a great BBQ gun too. To go with that S & W 500 Magnum BBQ grill

No need for an auto-start ignition. Just shoot into (500 revolver is the auto-start ignition) the grill, not only will you start cooking the meat; you’ll also tenderize it at the same time. As a bonus, you’ll get a “smoked” flavor. Unmatched by gas or charcoal.
Good thing it has locking casters (wheels). Yea, you don’t want that thing to start rolling away on ya’, using those procedures.

Don't listen to that crap, I have owned 5 of the 500 Mags and still have 2 of them, my buddies have the other 3. I have about 2000 rounds through my 6 inch and 1000 rounds through my 4 inch and I don't have any problems at all. I shot heavy loads through them.
I also had 6 of the 460 Mag and I shot thousands of rounds through them also. I have a 7.5 inch 460 that has over 2000 rounds through it alone. It is still going strong.
So who ever told you that is full of it.
