Model 24 from S&W, distributor special (Horton) available in blue or nickel...

Taurus Model M44C 2" Tracker. .44 mag - 2 1/2" ported barrel in stainless, weighs 31 ounces. Lock up and trigger are excellent. Bought it at the last guns show, dealer had about ten blued and ten stainless for $350. Has a Hi-Viz type front sight that I am afraid I'll melt of with hot mag loads, time will tell. Primary carry weapon at this time. Should have bought two. Great .44 Special carry gun as well.

I have a 445 ch-2 Taurus which is their now discontinued 5 shot .44 special with bobbed hammer and nickel plating. Mine took two trips to Taurus for warranty repair but it's been shooting fine ever since. The S&W equivalents I've seen have those finger molded grips that only work for every one else. I've read good things about the Charter Arms Bulldogs but I've never had the opportunity to shoot one. I guess given my respect for John Taffin and his long standing faith in the Bulldog, I'd certainly be willing to buy one. My problem thus far is finding a freaking ankle holster to sheath one in! My current thread has unearthed a couple of options but I continue to hope that Bulldogs are more popular than holster makers would have you believe!

I have two, one blued and one stainless that I had bead blasted to flat. I would be willing to part with one if you can't find any.

Why does Taurus discontinue all the good stuff
You can find S&W 296 snubs used. They are titanium-framed and very light. The recoil in mine is somewhat harsh but they are excellent carry guns.

Just to clarify... the 296's frame is just aluminum - no scandium, etc. The cylinder is titanium and the barrel liner is SS. They are limited to 200gr max, as stated on the barrel, and, according to S&W, to clad/jacketed ammo only - no lead rounds - a possible pulled crimp and resultant jam problem. They were as much as $789 MSRP once - but I bought mine new on closeout for $359 over four years ago. Mine has a steady diet of GA Arms loads (~$22/50) of the Speer 200gr .44 Special Gold Dot JHP (#4427) over enough propellant to get it just over the 800 fps minimum muzzle velocity for reliable opening, or the same bullet loaded similarly in a Blazer AL case for $16.86/50 from 'Academy Sports/Outdoors' chains locally.
My 296 has a home... even though I just got a 642. The R. Mika inside pocket holsters for both my 296 & 642 came yesterday - great fit!

Hurry and see if you can track down a Smith & Wesson Model 29 Bounty Hunter. It's a special run with 3" barrel, matte black finish, adj. sights, pachmayr grips, and of course chambered in .44 mag. Pretty sweet little gun, and no idea how much longer you'll be able to grab one.

Somewhat off topic, but S&W made 300 of these 2.5" .44 magnum 629-5's. This one is #013 of the 300. I think a version is available now but it has the lock.
