I have been thinking about trying the SSR catagory in IDPA. Does standard 158 grain pistol ammo make the power factor? Or what do you recommend? Thank you.

I've been told that most of the non +p American stuff is too anemic to make PF out of a 4" barrel. I know S&B 158 gr LRN does make PF, since mine was chrono'ed at S&W winter championships. I've also been told that Fiocchi makes power factor, but haven't used any of it.
I think most SSR shooters reload and don't buy factory ammo.

Here are the factory 38spl loads that I've chronographed from my 4" 686 that make PF.
Speer Lawman 158gr +P TMJ
Fiocchi 158gr fmj
Winchester SuperX 158gr LRN
All of the above made over 125pf with a little padding to be safe. Remember, not all barrels and chronographs are created equal. The only way to know for sure is to chronograph the ammo you want to use with your gun.
Good Luck!
