New Kel Tec p3at w/ a problem

March 24, 2007, 04:42 PM
I picked up my new p3at on thursday and shot it several times this weekend. The FMJ and JHP both cycled nicely but the magazine kept popping lose. I could barely get it to stay locked in. I called kel tec yesterday and they are sending a new magazine out right away. The guy said they have had a batch of bad magazines that have been doing this.

anyone else have a similar problem? It was disappointing being a brand new gun, first time out.

if you own a keltec, you must spend some time at reason the mag may pop, is the release button might be too high....sometimes a little sand paper is in order....gpr

Never had that problem with Kel Tec but had Glock magazines fall out of the gun when shot.

If the new magazine gives you trouble KT will probably send you a new magazine catch.

gpr is right. There's a lot of good info at the KTOG.

Having the same issue with a P3AT I purchased just today. I'm going to take it back up to the shop Monday to address it. I was very dissapointed as I have waited for a while to find one locally.

Many times the problem is that the grip is so small that your hands hit the release when shooting. The other is if you "slam" the mag into it, you can wear down the release, but it should not be happening on a brand new gun. Go to

Here's another site you can try.

If all else fails, you can send it in to Kel tec. They have a lifetime warranty.

The plastic "foot" of the magazine needs to be filed down a touch, or in the case of my P-3AT I had to file down the front edge of my magazine well just a hair so that the magazine would seat fully.

If you do this be very gentle, file a smidge then seat the magazine and test fit until things work.

Actually, I do not recommend the P38T to "beginner" hand gun enthusiasts. Nope, this is a weapon you might have to fluff and buff a in the magazines with a ruler to break in, etc. This is a little gun you really need to know intimately...clean every 50 rounds or so, change springs every 500 rounds...practice and learn just what ammo it likes. In spite of many people who say, "carry a lot, fire little", I say fire it often to break it in and learn how to shoot it. It is not fun to shoot...but I learned to put all six (I do not load to the 6 + 1 capacity) in the black at 25 yards...something I dream of doing with my 642! The only drawback of this little gun is the fact that the slide does not lock back when the mag is empty.
