I've been looking at the Electronic hearing protectors in the gun catalogs. There are several for less than $30. I'm curious if they work and how convenient are they compared to ear plugs. Also any brand recomendations or ones to stay away from as well.
Thanks.

I got some Caldwell electronic muffs on sale for 29.95. Pissed that 30 away. They work, but the backgroung noise drives me nutty. A short trip for me though. Others may not mind it.:)

The $20-$30 pairs I've seen all look like they come from the same maker, but with different names stenciled on the side. But I could be wrong. I have two pair of the Caldwells that work fine for me. They look exactly like some I bought at Harbor Freight ( $19/pr ). But I had to return 3 different sets back to HF because they'd quit working altogether, or would work in just 1 ear. I've never tried any of the more expensive brands ($80 & up ). And you probably get what you pay for ( to a point ). But the $30 Caldwells are okay with me.

Because often you're only paying for the name, not the product.

To a point this is true, but if you are fimiliar with brands and brand names or take the time to read a few reviews from credable sources this isnt rocket science (for everything not just hearing protection). But really...if they difference in price is $30.00 vs. $189.00 its not that hard to figure out that you arent buying top of the line at $30.00. Why people try to cheap out on the important things like hearing protection, their ccw piece, belts, holsters, etc and then turn around and pay out the nose for other things....I'll never understand.

If cost is that big of an issue get the best non electronic muffs you can afford and protect your ears. At 50 when you have a ringing in your ears, the $100.00 you saved at 30 wont mean jack. Its better to figure out what you really need from a good company and wait for a sale.

Midway had the Caldwell on sale about a year ago so I got a pair to try. Still have them...still love them. It's so nice to be able to talk and hear like a human on the range.

Well, I unzipped my fly and ordered two pair. Midway has them on sale for $24.99 each. I plan on taking two newbies shooting next week and they might be very helpful. We'll see.....
