Anyone on this Board reside in or near Kokomo, Indiana ? Looks like I and the wife will be attending a Vets Reunion there June 2nd-3rd. Trying to find things to do & see while there!

I am in Kokomo, I just moved here from Michigan and still have not gotten a chance to explore much. There are a ton of places to eat right on US-31. We have the most traffic lights than any town I have ever seen. There are a few golf courses.


Kokomo is about 1 hour north from Indy.

Just through Kokomo yesterday. I'm just west of there over in Carroll County.

rxrapor02 is right US 31 is resturant row through the city. I'm not much on talking up Kokomo, don't know it all that well.

North on 31 up in Miami County is Grissom Air Reserve Base and it's museum. Never been in the museum, but have walked the gate gaurd planes outside. The newest plane added was an F-14 Tomcat.

East on SR 26 gets you to Lafayette. I'm more at home talking it up. I has a new (late 06) Sportsman's Warehouse and it's wall of guns. Some nice local resturants. West side is home to Purdue University. There is also Battle ground, so named because William Henry Harrison fought an Indian battle there that lead him into the White House, "Tippicanoe and Tyler too". The museum at battle ground last year put a firearm display out last December that had a few flint locks made in Lafayette from back in the 1800's as well as other firearms. Prophetstown State Park is right there near Battle Ground. It's so named after the Indian Prophet Harrison fought in historic fight.

As stated by rxraptor, Indy is south of Kokomo. US 31 leads right down town to the circle (a round about) and in the circle is the Soilders and Sailors monument. Down along the river walk is the Medal of Honor wall, I've never been there. Also downtown is the Circle Center mall.

While it's called "The City of Firsts", it's probably one of the last places to visit just for visitings sake. The most exciting things to see are the Old Sycamore tree stump, and the Old Steer, both at Highland Park. They are both really big. Don't worry, someone will tell you how to get there.

Also, and not many people know this, but Elwood Haynes, America's inventor of the automobile, was from good ol' K-Town. His old home is now a museum. It's on the edge/north end of Highland Park, so you can't miss it once you get a chance to see the stump & steer. (As a side note, I don't know why the park is called "Highland", because it always floods during the rainy season...) Elwood's first auto is now in the Smithsonian in DC, but some of his others are at the home museum.

Now, for firearm related activities, there's an indoor range at Bulls-Eye Guns, on US 31 & Sycamore St. It's not a bad little shop, with 6 bays in the range. It's old, but in decent shape. I've not been there few years, so things might have changed.

There is also an Izaak Walton League with an outdoor range, but I don't know if they have public hours. You can look up contact info at www.iwla.org

As for stop lights - yeah, it's got 'em. Lots of them. New ones pop-up as soon as you turn around. There is actually a sign on the south side of town that warns "Multiple Traffic lights ahead", or something like that.

So, that's the lo-down of the town. Other's have mentioned the surrounding area. Hope you have fun. Ya'll come back now, ya hear?!

I live next door to highland park. I knew the old house was a museum, but never knew it was for Elwood Haynes.

The stump and steer are crazy. They are showcased in a bldg.

The airforce museum looks cool, they have alot of planes out in the front next to US31 on display.

The shooting range is ok, it is a little old and the lighting could be better. if you have your extra targets laying around make sure you keep them under a paperweight. the vents really kick up and will blow anything down range.

Grissom Air Force base has a little museum and some historical planes that are worth checking out. Also there's a pretty nice gun shop with an indoor range, right on the main drag through town. Several miles south of town there's Buckaroo Boot Company, which has nice western wear and occasionally gun leather. East of town on state road 22 there's a hole-in-the-wall military surplus store that's worth checking out if you're bored.

This is Indiana, there's not much to do here.
