Store Metal Detector Update

OK. There is some variation among different stores, but the alarms seem to go off most often when I have my P7M8 AND Benchmade knife with me.

They go off less often with just one of those, OR if I switch the gun to a P7M13.
I always carry a Leatherman Wave and Gerber knife also, but they don't seem to affect this.

So, maybe there is some sort of RF resonance that occurs between the knife and gun, causing these stupid alarms to go off.

Pretty wierd, huh?

Maybe I SHOULD start wearing a tinfoil hat. :uhoh:

So what do you do when they try to stop you? Do you just tell them that it is your weapons that are causing the alarm to go off?

P.S. For those of you who have no idea what this is in reference to, see this thread:

P.P.S. Clothing/Shoes do not affect this, and it's now a new wallet.

My 'car remote entry' device set off the detectors at Wal-Mart yesterday. Not carrying ANY weapons, other than keys.

So far nobody has ever tried to search me, or ask why it's going off. That of course begs the question of why the alarms are there in the first place.

In a slightly perverse way, I'm almost wanting someone to ask me what I'm concealing to see how they react.

I won't tell anyone I'm carrying unless I have to.

Chipperman,

That's just utterly weird.

I think I'd be shopping for tinfoil, if I were you.

something on you is magnetized if you're setting it off. thats why they rub the books over those little pads that say "do not put credit card on this pad". its to demagnetize the little strips that they put in the books and other merchandise. i'm not sure how to demagnetize things though. anyone?

Heh. I can't help but think of walking into Borders, going up to the register, and running a pistol and a knife over the little demagnitizing pad :) Ignoring the obvious problems doing that, it seems like a funny image...

I used to set off every single one coming and going.

It turned out to be my building access card.
(the one you hold up to a sensor and it unlocks the door)

It got so annoying that I held my wallet over my head so it wouldn't pass between the sensors.

You should carry a Glock. Everybody knows they are invisible to x-rays and metal detectors!

after reading your other thread .. I'd check over the items you carry all the time, boots knife sheaths, belt etc.. see if a buddy is messing with you.

I'll admit I and some buddies have messed with our friends by taking them off books or dvds whatever and hiding it in a friends shoes or jacket or in their belt.

But that was back in highschool :p

You never know, I work with guys that are 30yo teenagers :neener:

Let me get this straight.

You carry a Benchmade, a Leatherman, and a Gerber all at the same time?

yeah my C.A.R remote entry device sets off some alarmd too:D

never had this problem before though. its weird i usually have my keys a bersa a spare mag an a pocket knife on me too?

"You carry a Benchmade, a Leatherman, and a Gerber all at the same time?"

Yep.
I carry the Gerber in my left front, Benchmade right front, and Leatherman on right hip. CCW on Left hip.

It's less for defense, and more for accessability. I often have one hand holding something (animal, bandage, rope, etc), and quickly need a knife. I can access a knife with either hand and quickly cut whatever I need to.

I've never killed anything with my knives, but they have helped me save many lives.

People used to make fun of me for carrying all these "weapons". They don't anymore, b/c they see how useful they are, and get sheepish after asking to borrow them.

(They don't know about the CCW)

Not sure if this will be of any help but...

if you need to demagnetize something, there are "demagnetizers" made for that purpose. I bought one at radio shack a few years ago. (Works great to wipe out cassette tapes and even VHS tapes - if powerful enough.)

Plug it in and push the button (activate it) ... from a distance (a few feet) bring it CLOSE to the object (gun barrel, whatever), kinda wave it around the barrel and then slowly pull it away making sure not to turn it off until you are a few feet away again.

- I DO think this is a long shot though.

Yeah, those are metal detectors...

*sarcasm included due to disregarding all previous statements that they are NOT metal detectors, no matter how hard he tries to uncover the conspiracy against CCW holders.

"It's less for defense, and more for accessability."

Understood.

I can see the Benchmade and a multitool (or two) but why a Gerber and a Wave? Why not two Gerbers or two Waves (for the multitools)? Just curious. I also have and like both but carry only the Gerber all of the time.

FYI, Blade-Tech makes a kydex sheath for the leatherman Wave that I can HIGHLY recommend. I'd suggest the one with Tec-Lok.

Chipperman:

Those things aren't metal detectors. They might be sending out an RF signal to excite a transponder or they are detecting magnetic fields.

But they aren't metal detectors.

I live in MA and carry a spyderco, Kimber Compact, and sometimes pepper spray. I've never set off one of those alarms.

Credit cards have magnetic strips.
If you are blessed with lots of credit (to the point that you can hardly sit on all the cards) that might be part of the problem.

I push a shopping cart filled with tools, including power tools, through those things daily, at several different stores, and have only once had one go off. If my 50-60# of junk won't do it, I doubt it's actually your hardware.

Once again, those devices in stores are NOT metal detectors, otherwise just about everybody would set them off by carrying keys, pocket knives, shoes with metal plates, and so on.

Chipperman
June 12, 2003, 12:38 PM
OK, they are not metal detectors.
They are anti-theft device detectors.

It was easier to type the first line, and everyone knew what I was talking about.

The bottom line is, I can't figure out why I'm setting them off.
As I stated in the beginning, it must be some sort of resonance between the gun and the Benchmade.

Trying to de-magnetize them is a good idea. I'll see if I can find a way to try it.

They're deterrents, meant to cause potential thieves to think "do I really want to set off a loud alarm even if it's likely nobody's going to do anything about it?" Some do, some don't. Apparently the thefts by people who don't cost the stores more than the sensors.

Stores that are more serious do the receipt-and-bag-check-upon-departure thing. And a quick groups.google.com search will turn up most everything you need to know about that (lawful and unlawful detention rules, what happens if you ignore the door nazis and keep walking, etc.)

You might want to listen to Logistar and "degauss"(de-magnitize) your gun and knives. BTW: That tool he's referring to is sometimes called a de-gausser.

It can't hurt anything to try, although it would certainly be prudent to unload the pistol first, but you already know that.

Go through the thing nude with only your belt, gun and knives.

Let me know how it works out.

Its not a magnetic problem, so deqaussing won't help. Those security devices send out a low power RF signal and the passive tag on your stolen merchandise converts the signal to power and transmits a signal back, when they run the tag over the device at the store it kills the tag. A remote or something might be close enough in frequency that it could be providing a false response, its unlikely that a chunk of metal, gun or knife, would. If your sure you have no tags on your person the next thing i would look at would be electronic devices.
