AK74 Muzzle brake for WASR 2

I have a unthreaded WASR 2 in 5.45. I was thinking of adding a AK74 style muzzle brake to it, like the one TAPCO sells.

Can the barrel be threaed for this brake? I would assume a lathe would be better to cut the threads. Anyone know of a good shop to do this?

Or would it be easier to just pin on a brake? If so who sells them?

You really should thread the barrel (14x1 left threads) and then you have to add a detent pin, that holds the brake in place from backing out. Really not hard at all, and most compitent gunsmiths can handle it no problem. Much better than pinning it on.

I did just what you are asking about. There is a guy that rents the proper threading tool kit...$20 if I remember right for the tools and instructions. Just can't remember who it is right now (located him through one of the boards I frequent...arfcom possibly?) I also bought the detent spring and in for about $5. Screwed the brake on...works great.

I found a local gunsmith who will do it for $30.

On a side note anybody try the TAPCO AK74 brake on a 5.45 gun? They say it will work with 7.62 or .223.

I did my WASR-3 with 1/2-28 threads, and got that style brake from Bushmaster

Shopped and found a TAT and die for $30 if I remember correctly.

He says he can get the die from Brownells for around $15.

Just make sure he uses a TAT to keep the die square with the bore.

I am thinking of getting the Die and TAT and from Brownells.

Does the TAT from Brownells fit into a 5.45 barrell.

Also to those who threaded the barrell, can you thread with the front sight post still in place?

You CAN thread with the FSB in place, but it's better to tap the pins out of it first.

I'm in the same boat.

I've decided to install an AK-74 type muzzle brake on my Arsenal Bulgarian SLR-96.
My problem is, the muzzle has the factory pinned-on brake and there's two slots across the barrel for the brake pins.
Apparently, this will not be a problem for threading, BUT........

My front sight base is NOT drilled for a retaining pin and spring, and from the looks, there isn't enough room to drill it for one.
Replacing the sight support is expensive, and trying to find one that will fit the SLR will be difficult.

Another problem is, apparently the man who was renting the threading kits stopped after some bad experiences, which is another case of deadbeats and bums ruining it for everyone.

It comes down to my options being to install a Tapco style pin-on brake, or install one of the screw-detent adapters, then screw a standard AK-74 break on that.
The trouble with that is, the screw-detent adapters have a BAD reputation for blowing off, no matter how well they're installed.
Second problem is, there's still no detent pin, so the brake will likely unscrew when fired.

Looks like my best option is the Tapco pin-on.

I have a 1999 Romak 2, 545x39, and the tack welded on muzzle nut has the detent and spring installed. Could the nut be threaded? Anyone know before I grind the weld off.....thanks....chris3

Maybe thread the barrel and use a bit of Loctite to keep the brake on? It won't be quite as effective as a detent pin but should hold up I would think unless you're getting your barrel really hot.

Pin-on brakes just don't seem like the best idea. I have one, but I want to thread my barrel eventually and get a real brake.

According to my info, the Romak 2 has NO threads under the nut.
This means you can thread the muzzle and be in business.

The idea is to have a brake that can be easily removed for normal cleaning, and Loctite would be a mess to work with.
Also, Loctite breaks down at around 300 degrees, and an AK barrel easily gets that hot.

Short of finding a rental threading kit, I think right now I'll punt and buy a Tapco pin-on AK-74 brake.

What I'd really like to do is buy a GOOD AK-74 rifle from Arsenal Inc, but that'll have to wait on finances.
I did notice that there's now a source of the Russian 5.45x39 6NP "poison bullet" ammo now being imported.
This is the ammo developed for use in Afghanistan that tumbles wildly after it hits something.

dfariswheel, now is indeed a good time to shoot the 5.45 round. Surplus ammo is available from Bulgaria, Former Soviet Union and Poland that I am aware of. Some is going for as little as $118 for a 1080 spam can.

There is no real difference between any nationality because they all are loaded with the PS bullet, so pick whichever one you prefer and blast away!

I am not sure if i want to take the the sight base off or not. I was really wondering about the TAT. I know it fits in the barrel to align the die. But is the Brownells made for 7.72 or 5.45 or will it work in both?

The TAT MUST be in the caliber you need, since it has to be a snug fit in the bore.
A 7.62 TAT won't fit into a 5.45 bore, and a 5.45 TAT would be WAY too loose in a 7.62.

I "think" (note the qualifier) that a 5.56/.223 TAT will work in the 5.45 bore.

I too don't want to risk removing the front sight base.
These are fitted VERY tightly at the factory, and mine is well aligned and not canted.
These things just don't seem to go back on as well as they were to start with.

how can I thread this booger? I wanna get a 74 type comp for it

That depends on whether you have threads under the nut, and whether the front sight base has the hole for the muzzle brake detent pin and spring.

If the barrel is threaded and the hole is there, you just get the nut off, clean up the threads, install the detent, and you're good to go.

If there are no threads, you have options.
One is to buy or borrow a threading kit. This is a 14x1 LEFT HAND METRIC threading die, a guide stud that fits down the bore to keep the tap square with the barrel, and a die handle.
If there's no hole for the detent, this is a problem, because the brake will unscrew when fired.

Due to the problems with no threads and no detent hole, I'm installing a pin-on Tapco AK-74 brake until I can decide what I want to do long-term.

Well brownells does not sell a TAT for 5.45. Told me to check with FA enterprises.

Precise Innovations LLC list a TAT for 5.45. However the web site lists it as being backorded. May give them a call and see how long before they have in stock.

I allready have a muzzle brake. Got one from Tapco. Brownells have the tap i need. Just need to get my C&R over to them so i can get my discount.

Having problems though finding a thread allingment tool for 5.45 cal. though.

I checked the places mentioned above and none had a 5.45 TAT.

I Have a 5.45 and 7.62 TAT on order along with the 14x1 lh die.

Plan on threading on my WASR 10 too.

After i get done with my threading anyone want to buy or rent the TAT's and die?

I probally won't use them again.

Why not remove the old FSB and press on a new one with Romanian 22mm or European 24mm threads? Then you could use the original AK-74 muzzle device.

I don't really want to remove the FSB. Heard its a pain to get off.

I allready have the brake for the 14x1LH threads. The one i am putting on is us. I would think a orginal brake, might run into 922R compliance issues.

Getting it off isnt really hard. Getting it back on can be a pain... It is really dependent on the gun. Sometimes, a press is required, sometimes just a hammer. Either way, replacing the FSB is the more "authentic" route to go...and will likely result in a higher resale value for your gun. What is more, there are US manufactured AK-74 brakes in 24mm.
