I have a used 870 that I purchased sometime last year. I dont know the history of it other than the owner didnt shoot it a whole lot.
This 870 has been an absolute clay killer!!
How do I know if the 26" barrel is safe for steel shot? I was told by someone to make sure I can shoot steel out of the barrel if I go duck hunting.
Suggestions would be great!!
TIA

Maybe someone with more knowledge than me will correct me, but I don't see why an 870 can't shoot steel shot, as long as the choke is compatiblewith steel shot. If you have choke tubes, the tube should say it is usable with steel shot.
I shoot a reasonable amount of steel out of my 870 during duck season.
If you're worried, see if your load uses a full-legth shot cup. That should protect your barrel.
Consult a gunsmith if you are unsure.

Yes,you can. 26" 870 barrels are usually open choked, what's yours?

It came with a Remington Modified Choke.

Is that a tube choke or fixed? Either will work for steel.

The choke is the screw in type.
Thanks to both Daves for the information.
