Okay, I've never really shot a varmint, per se. There, that's out of the way.

I have a Remington 700 VLS (Varmint, Laminated Stock) in .22-250 Remington. I put a 36x BSA Catseye scope on it and fiddled with the trigger.

Group sizes with 52 grain bullets vary a bit, but shooting ten rounds and having them all touch is not surprizing. Best group was somewhere in the .4xx" range and that was in development.

I have every confidence this will adequately do for varmints at any range I can see them and get a good hold. At the very least, it's a heck of a start.

I'm no expert but I just got a used Savage model 10 in 22-250 with a simmons whitetail classic scope, cheapie. I took it to the range and sighted it in a 100yds. I made some small adjustments and was blasting clays all day at 200yds and even out to 300yds consistently. I was ringing the gong all day at 400yds. I don't know it it shoots real tight groups but if I can destroy clays at 300yds consistently, then it must be able to hit a coyote in the head or vitals.

I purchased a Cooper Mod. 22 a year or so ago, and it just seems to keep getting better, a little pricey though (it was my last splurge while still single). Accurate to further than I have any business shooting it, and it looks good doing it.

That said, the Savages seem to have quite a following, I've handled and shot several, the only valid complaint that I've heard is that the synthetic stocks aren't very stiff, but, that can either be replaced or you can purchase one with the laminated stock.

Ultimately, in the past, for me, I found a #1 Ruger with a 24” Barrel to be quite effective at dispatching varmints. 1 shot, 1 varmint. Personally I always use Leupold optics on my critter getters and I favored 3.5x10 because on a hot day with a hot barrel I found them to remain a little clearer than some of the higher powers. Also most shots were 300 yards or less.

My personal favorite is an older model 70 Winchester with the same optics. Totally customizable and one reason I favor the Model 70 is because of the way safety lever on the back of the bolt works. Just my opinion but I believe it to be one of the best type rifle safeties.

However, neither of these would be inexpensive

my favorite is a winchester M-70 26" barreled varminter, stocks been bedded, trigger tuned to 28oz and its got a cheap S&W 3x18x40 mil-dot scope, I leave it set on 15x because it tends to shift poi when changing the power,

my favorite load uses h380, WLR, 50gr v-max in winchester brass, it shoots consistantly into 3/4" 5 shot groups @100yrd, and when I really do my part has gone slightly under 1/2".

The BEST for the money, I believe, would be a Savage(stevens). I still have two old Savage rilfes from 1979 and 1980 in 22-250. They both still go sub moa with three shots(100yds). One has a 24" and the other has a 26" barrel. But, that Rem. 700 SPS outfit looks intrigueing with the 24" barrel. A 22-250 makes good use of a longer barrel. And, Remington bolt guns are usually very acurrate. Just some thoughts on a broad question. Old 112
