S&W Mod. 10-6 in .357

How many people have ever seen a S&W Mod. 10 in .357(always a .38 cal. gun). It is marked inside the crane MOD.(over)10-6. It has a 4" heavy barrel. It is bearing serial no. D6058xx. On the right side of the barrel it is marked "S.&W.357 Magnum". I have heard that these were New York State Police guns from the early 70s but that is all I know. Anyone know anything about these guns? Thank you.

Sounds like someone replaced the barrel.

Will the chamber accept .357mag cartridge ?

I have two M10-6 that have been built into Limited class PPC revolvers. (Bull barrels, Aristocrat ribs, ect.)
It would be a simple matter to remove the barrels and to install the barrel from a M13, that WAS a .357mag. I suspect that the barrel would have to be faced down on a .357 (set back) to set the barrel/cylinder gap to correct distance.

Other possibility was that S%W built it with the .357 barrel as at one time, they were sold and the purchasing company was building guns from parts "on-hand".

It could be from the NY Police, but more likely an overrun for that shipment, you will find out best by getting a historical letter from S&W. Roy Jinks the S&W historian will find when your gun was shipped and a little basic history of that model of gun, it costs $35.

In 1972 Smith & Wesson made several thousand model 10-6 revolvers in .357 Magnum for the New York State Police - and undoubtedly there were some over runs. As they left the factory there were no special police markings, but the 4" heavy barrels were marked .357 Magnum. Barrels were pinned, and case heads recessed. While the barrels were a special run, the cylinders were the same as those used in the model 19. Rather then continue with this version as a model 10, future production was introduced as the model 13.

I don't have the Standard Catalog of S&W handy, but I have an unfired Model 64 (the 10's stainless cousin) in .357 Magnum. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol ordered roughly 700 of them. The one I have was probably an overrun for that order. I need to get Roy Jinks to write me a letter on it.
