The KAC version is not going to be released to the public.

"Introduced at the 2002 Shot Show in Las Vegas. The SR-47 is based on the SR-16/SR-15 design, but it chambered in 7.62 x 39mm. The SR-47 accepts all double stack AK-47 style magazines, and has a free-floated barrel. This unit also offer drop-free magazine release. This unit will be available in a limited quantity commercial version (possibly less sound suppressor) by the third quarter of this year. Optional front and rear flip-up sights will be available also.

As of March 14th, 2002 - Knight's Armament Co. has cancelled the commercial product/release of this unit."

I think the concept is more screwed up than a football bat. You're combining the not-so-quick/natural (compared to the AR15, in my opinion) magazine change of the AK with the gas system of the AR15, it also requires a specialized lower (and most systems require a modified upper as well). I think a better solution to this would be to wait until the AW ban expires and see if any companies figure out how to make 7.62x39 AR15 mags feed better than the current offerings do.

Oh, and the whole thing about being associated with Special Weapons. :what:

Will there be a 5.45 offering from ths manufacturer as well?

Perhaps they were striving for parts commonality. Battlefield pick-up 7.62x39 may vary in how clean it burns, and you're still using the Stoner gas-impingement system in that Knight's SR47. Wouldn't the Daewoo gas piston system have been a better idea for an AR-47/AK-15 type rifle? ZM Weapons did the gas piston thing too, if I remember correctly.

Yeah, I hear you, Andrew, concerning Special Weapons LLC and their track record. Now watch, Todd Bailey will jump into this thread... :scrutiny:

Yeah, I hear you, Andrew, concerning Special Weapons LLC and their track record. Now watch, Todd Bailey will jump into this thread...

If that happens it would be quite a hillarious thread until it got locked.

The "torture" testing that Todd plans to do for his Rino gas rod rip off is something rediculous like 2k rounds. OH MY, a whole 2000 rounds before it's deemed good enough to dump on the market?

Oh, the first one he tried out didn't get proper heat treat on the parts so it ate itself to bits in like less than 100 rounds.

Kharn, thanks for the laugh man. "Football bat", I haven't heard that one in like 5+ years.

The thing about the AK mags that would concern me, hardened steel AK mags gouging into soft aluminum. Repeated work stresses in that area and suddenly the tolerances will BE LOOSE and grow looser with time.

It's not like with the AR15 magazine catch which takes stresses in a different way and even with wear on the magazine and catch the alignment can be assured. I can't help but wonder how long it would be until an AK mag's lip started to gouge or hollow out some of the aluminum in the lower and screwed up alignment.

All I know, is if Knights dropped the idea after having problems getting the things to run more than 600-700 rounds without a cleaning. I don't know how much faith I have for others to manage the same. Knights was also said to be going through the trouble of cherry picking mags for their guns to help achieve better reliability.

Only thing Toddy is doing "smart" is trying to go with oprod style gas system, that dirty 7.62x39mm would probably neccesitate such a move.
