.22 Short

Does someone still uses or have a pistol with this nice little caliber? I remember i had one, it was so funny when you shoot it, its sounds like an air rifle, pretty cool if you live in the city. What i would love some day is to shoot the .22 CB cap. JAJAJA, That little things still can kill you. I dont know why all people just talk and love big calibers like 9mm and .40 etc, i love this small calibers, i guess it reminds me when i was a child, they are very little but you can actually do damage and the precision it excellent you can hit everything 100 yards away with a .22 LRhttp://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/4/41/Bb_capsmall2.jpg/250px-Bb_capsmall2.jpg

My dad still has a Beretta that my mom bought for him in 1963. She saved for months to come up with $15 to buy it for him as a surprise. He loves that gun and shows it to me often. I remember shooting it as a kid and it is a fun gun to shoot. I would like to find one for myself. He hasn't shot his in years because his eyesight is bad. That is one of the last guns he owns now along with a S&W 9mm for home protection and his old trap shotgun.

I love my .22s
But i confess I have not considered .22 short for many years
I do have a box of those CBs I use them to shoot pest in my semi suburban backyard when I'm out of CO2 cartridges
They sound the same

I have a single shot Remington rifle that fires .22 short. I use it in the backyard all the time...it is more quiet than my pellet gun. If I shoot straight off the back porch, it is about 3 miles ti the nearest neighbor...

Beretta Minx.
Growing up Mentors and Elders had these and these were great guns!
Reliable, accurate, and sweet triggers. As a kid, these were so much fun to shoot. Around the property they did great for pest control - like in the garden.
I was given one as a surprise and what a surprise it was.
I would collect soda bottles and turn them in to the neighborhood Grocer for 2 cents each. Best Recall .22 shorts were 15 cents a box, Longs were 17 cents, and Long rifle were 19 cents.
Maternal Grandma gave me when I was born a High Standard Sentinel, .22 , nine shot revolver. It would shoot shorts, longs, and long rifle. Depending on how many "coke" bottles I had collected and turned in, dictated what I bought for ammunition.
Just my luck, coke bottles started bringing 3 cents each and "my" ammo went up a few cents respectfully per box.
"Ok, I have 7 coke bottles, I can get a box of the long rifles today!! :p "
Single shot .22 Rifles, such as the Rem 5xx fired all three types of .22 ammo.
Rem 514 for instance is still a favorite single shot rifle I like to shoot, and with .22 short.
Wildlife Regs here state if one were to raccoon hunt at night, they can only use .22 short.
Folks out with lights, dogs, and kids and have that raccoon treed, and this in itself was/ still is a pretty neat deal for a kid.
Kid steps up with .22 and uses a .22 short to take a raccoon.
I have shot quite a few raccoons with "My" .22 revolver and pretty dang-burned neat when an adult says - "need to borrow your gun to take a shot ..."

I have two rifles and a pistol that shoot the short. I've used the short to dispatch opossum. The olyimpic pistol comps had a .22 short event didn't they? Also I thought the olympic winter biathlon (X-county ski /rifle comps) use .22 Shorty?

I had a minx in .22 short that I foolishly used as a trade-in on another handgun. I think I got $90 for it. I should have kept it. The .22 short isn't exactly a ball-buster, but that little pocket pistol was made every bit as well as my larger ones. :(

The 22 short now cost as much or more than 22LR. I still own
a semi auto Win. 74 in 22short only. As a youngster living on the
edge of a major midwest city, I would use the CB Cap to take
an occasional pheasant and cottontail. Especially the pheasant,
only head and neck shots were sure kills.:)

I shoot shorts from my 10/22. Three feral cats, with one shot each, out to forty yards.

I have a Marlin rifle that shoots shorts long and LR. Are they quiet enough to use in a backyard? And they can be used in rifles right? Would they have a similar poi at around 50yds as LR? Could I zero at 50 yds with the shorts and have a poi with a couple inches if I shot LR? And what kinds of prices and availibility are we talking as far as local gun stores? Sorry about all the questions.

Shorts do not cycle in my 10/22. I load them by hand. Point of aim is close 25-30 yards. Over that a bit of Kentucky. They are as quiet as a pellet gun. Try one out the back door and see.

Aguilla makes a .22 round that has a short casing and powder charge, and a huge (60 gr or something) bullet so the profile is like a long rifle. You have to have a specical barrel twist to stabilize the big bullet or it will keyhole after 25 yards or so.
I got a box because I thought they looked interesting then put them away after realizing the range limitations. One night we had a rabid coon on the porch so out came the wife's .22 savage loaded with those funny bullets. One quiet shot and the coon had a large hole all the way through his noggin.

I've had a Beretta Minx 22 Short for some time.
Wouldn't part with it, especially since I have about 14 thousand rounds of Remington 22 Short ammo.:)
A few months ago I shot the 15 yard TX concealed carry target at 98 yards. The little gun hit 11 out of 14 shots.
I do a lot of plinking using 22 Shorts in my Ruger Bearcat.

It seems odd such a short round would be so accurate. What's the reasoning behind such a phenomena?

I am under the impression the accuracy comes from staying below the sound barrier (for lack of a better word) during the complete flight. The transition across super-sonic to sub-sonic causes some buffeting which negatively impacts the accuracy.

I have found that a memory of collecting coke bottles and a fondness for .22s seem to go hand in handSo true! I remember riding along the local roads in the early 50's and filling up my bicycle basket with Coke bottles, stopping at the grocery store and then off to the Western Auto for some 22s. Good times, good times! :)

I have a NAA Mini 22S revolver that I bought as it was cute. They are not made that much and it appealed to me.
The other day I saw one of those little Colt 22S semis - made in Spain? Anyway the price was $400 and a touch to high just for cute.

CCI still makes CB and BB caps - at least the last time i checked they did.. I would buy both [cb & bb caps] and head off to the river with my Ruger Single Six convertible single-action revolver and do some fishing and plinking without making a big rukus or attracting much attention. Save the 'powerful' .22 mags for the big stuff ;)
Yes, i do believe there's still a use for these little cartridges

Instead of buying an air rifle to eliminate rabbits in our garden in early spring when plants are just coming out, I bought at box of .22 cb ammo.
Very quiet in my remington 581.
Inexpensive solution to rabbit problem.

I use .22 Short and CB all the time for pest control. My preferred rimfire rifles are those that will accept short, long and long rifle. At present they are my Marlin 81G, Marlin 39 golden, Winchester 68 and Remington 552. My only dedicated .22 Short is an 1868 manufacture S&W model 1 second issue revolver; I don't use it much.

Aren't Olympic pistol competitions shot with .22 shorts? I know they used to be. High Standard made a beautiful (as all High Standards were) model they called the Olympic, chambered for .22 short, specifically for competition.

I shoot and old Walther OSP in 22 Short. This gun was designed for the Olympic rapid fire event. Last year the Olympic group changesd the requirement for the rapid fire event which now requires a pistol in 22 LR.

I mentioned this in the revolver section the other day regarding the .22 short. I had a .22 Minx for a while and I really loved it. After doing alot of research I came accross an article that compared the .22 short, LR and 25 acp in Beretta 950's. Long story short, the little .22 short is actually the most efficient in the short barreled gun. It gave up a few foot pounds overall but it worked out of the short barrels as compared to the LR and ACP which lost much of their energy. The test consisted of wet phone books and measured the penetration, funny thing was that the little .22 short HP's actually did some expanding. I wish I would have kept the article it was a good read. Bill

I hit the mother lode on coke bottles one day.
This was one of the bestest days a kid could have.
I was out running around with Mentors.
It was around my B-day in April - when the crappie start biting here.
Early in the morning we checked on some rental property some tenants had moved out, left the place all neat and tidy and the closet off the carport was opened and Coke Bottles in the wooden cases. Stacked up taller that ME !
I mean these coke cases were about shoulder high to my Mentor...
He just grinned, and I had starting looking from floor to "up" and had dollar signs in my eyes. :D
"You can have those if you want them" Mentor said. :D
Man oh Man I was Rich!
I needed help getting them in the truck, like I said the top case was way taller that I.
"I suppose you would like to turn those in at the grocery store - huh?" Mentors sure can ask dumb questions ...
We hit Sears Roebuck, Montgomery Wards, Otasco and Western Auto.
Needed a prop for the little Wizard outboard for crappie fishing...
I managed to get a box of .22 short at all the stores, and MW and WA just gave me a box since it was near my B-Day and all.
We met up with other Mentors, Elders, friends and shot, I still had all 4 boxes of my .22 shorts, and "here, shoot these up" so I was shooting for free, had 4 boxes of new .22 shorts, and money!
New cane pole from OTASCO for me and we fished for late evening Crappie using red Coleman lanterns. Caught lots of crappie!

I still use .22 short HP's (CCI) all the time. They are my favorite for flying rats (pigons) in the barn, as the kill with 1 shot and stay in the bird, no damage to the roof.

Years ago I was given an old Winchester Model 55 single shot .22 .. Along with it came a huge coffee can of OLD .22 shorts and longs... I have been shooting these through the 55 for a while now and YES they are incredibly quiet.. the shorts that is.......
I have shot the Aguila SSS 60gr rounds before.. noticibly louder then the shorts
The Aguila Super Colibri are, in my opinion, much quieter that the shorts...
AND I have never been able to get 22 shorts to feed from any of the mags for my 10/22.. Heck they will not even eject...
I have a Marlin Model 60 that when freshly cleaned and lubed will cycle and feed the shorts until it gets "slightly" dirty...

Those Aquillas that use only a primer and bullet are very quite. I use them in an old Stevens single shot with a fixed 4X weaver. Very deadly on yard vermin of all sorts. I hear the bullet hit whatever I'm shooting at. CBs sound like LR compared to the super quite Aquilla's. the box does say for hand guns because the bullet may get stuck in the barrell of a rifle but I never had that problem.
I think Marlin makes a tube fed bolt 22 that will work with shorts. Also most tube fed lever guns will accomidate shorts.

I use them out of revolvers, a Taurus M94 and a Heritage RR sometimes. They're good to start new shooters on: no recoil to speak of and quiet so they aren't frightened of guns right off the bat.

Our club has a Rotten Egg Shoot. (Hang eggs from a string at various distances). It is shot with .22's, pistol or rifle depending on the match.
One day, I decided to bring .22 shorts. Everybody else stepping up to the line has a loud POP. I step up and have a little pop. Really surprised everybody to hear a quiet gun going off. Did have fun doing that, and also hit the eggs. :D
However, I have not shot a .22 short with a pistol yet.
Used to be I could shoot an airgun outside my house, but the 1960's were a long time ago. I don't dare step outside with a .22 short and try that. The air rifle I have makes enough noise, or so I think, to be heard by nosey and possible police-telephoning neighbors. (Sigh) :(
Ah well, it's a nice thought.
The Doc is out now

I have a little nickle-plated 7 shot derringer that shoots 22 shorts. It has a 2.5" barrel, rosewood grips and says "You Bet" on the barrel, I have no idea what brand it is. I've used it on soda cans, squirrels and rats. It's fairly accurate out to maybe 25', it just sort of 'pops' when you pull the trigger. Fun.
