...just like a .357 mag gun using a .38 spl round?

To my knowlege, the .45 Glock will not function in a .45ACP handgun. Being shorter, the .45Glock would not chamber properly in a .45ACP handgun. .38SPL and .357 Magnum are revolver cartridges. Revolvers are a bit more tolerant of variations in ammo than a semiauto. Also, I don't think a .45Glock cartridge would fit or function in standard .45ACP magazines.
It's kind of like trying to use .380 in a 9mm. It will probably chamber and go off, but you're not going to get any accuracy, and the gun will probably not cycle correctly.

To expand a little on MarineTech's comments, even if the new cartridge matches the diameter of the 45ACP, it would not headspace properly on the end of the chamber. In a 1911, the design feeds a controlled round, the extractor engages the cartridge rim as it strips it from the magazine. In the case of a shorter round, it would probably be held in place in the chamber by the extractor hook and you'd probably have ignition but accuracy and reliability would definitely suffer. Since it appears that Glock's intent is to provide 45 ACP performance in a smaller frame size that's more amenable to smaller hands, there wouldn't be much difference in ballistics even if the cartrdige would function properly in a 45ACP gun.

If the diameter and rim of compatible with .45ACP, and there is any reason to do so (maybe .45 glock will become wildly popular, and cheaper to buy ammo for) then I'm sure aftermarket barrels will be come avaialbe.

Maybe in a S&W 1917 or M-25, but not in an autopistol...

FWIW, my G20 has a KKM .40 barrel and 10 mm mags function
flawlessly. I don't know why one would bother but it would be possible to swith to the .45 Glock assuming aftermarket mfg. would begin making barrels for existing Glock .45 ACP's.
Perhaps the most stupid autopistol development of the last 50 years.

Isn't the caliber actually .43?

There's been some speculation about the diameter, but I haven't seen anyone with genuine first-hand information.
ATK (Speer) lists the cartridge in their line-up.
Does anyone have a contact there who would actually be in a position to know?

I've been thinking about this one for a while Longbow, and I have to ask you 1 question. Why would you want to?
The big sell on the 45Glock is that it offers .45ACP performance in a shorter cartridge to allow it to be chambered in 9mm grip sized guns. Attempting to use it in a normal .45ACP is going to negate that advantage.
Also, since it's a new cartridge with limited availability, it's going to be more expensive and harder to get than normal .45ACP ammo.
Thirdly, from testing reports that I've read so far, it has a slightly snappier recoil than the .45ACP.
So, with that all in mind, you've pretty much lost the same impetus for using .38SPL in a .357Magnum (cost and recoil). What's the point of doing it?

As long as someone makes a .45 GAP barrel for the BHP, i don't care what happens.

Andrew,
I thought of that too, but I think the BHP's slide is too narrow.

it's the same width as a 1911 slide.

A lot of people don't like what Dean has to say, but it's incredibly rare that anyone proves him wrong.
I have always found Dean's statements to be based in fact.

Thanks everyone for all your info! I just thought it might be another caliber option for my 1911's (my favorite launching platform :)). It kinda add versatility to guns chambered for .45 ACP, if it can be used. But, maybe not...

I'll probably buy one when they become available just because it's something different. I'll be able to load for it using my .45 ACP dies and I won't have to buy any new holsters. Sounds like a good deal to me.:D

I suspect you would risk a case head seperation if you fired the new 45 glock in a 45 ACP chamber. It may not happen everytime or in all guns, but you would be relying on the extractor to hold the cartridge against the breechface. It would be just like firing any other gun with excess headspace. If it becomes cheaper than 45 ACP +P it may see some use in my 625.

The .38Special works in a .357Mag revolver because both rounds use a rimmed case. It is the rim that prevents the .38Special from moving too deeply into the cylinder.
