came across a smith 1911 stainless in excellant condition at Gander. Price was 589 and new ones were going for 849. Is 589 a good price. Should I wait for the M&p I already have two M&P's 9and 40

Great gun, fairly good price depending which specific model it is.

If it is the stainless 5" w/the large billboard logo on one side, then I've seen them used around $500-550 OTD.

No this one does not have the billboard on the slide, and yes it is the 5" model

I love mine. You could do a hell of a lot worse. In about 700 rnds it burped once on an hp that I suspect had a short OAL. Gun was 500 rounds dirty. I did fire the rnd in the next mag without a problem. So in a way it is 100%. Meaning all rounds attempted were fired. If I could buy a S&W 1911 for $500 I would.

Good Luck! -bevr

I think it's more of a question of 1911 or just another polymer. If you don't have a 1911 already, it's time.

Good price on a great 1911. Go for it, but be prepaired that it will lead to Baer, Wilson, Nighthawk, etc

After the initial run, Smith decided to remove the large billboard type
advertisement and go to a much smaller, scaled down script on the
slide. This should be product code #108282, a basic 5" stainless gun
with Novak low mount, three dot sights. I sell this gun NIB for $739.88
everyday; so yes, it seems like you have found an "attractive price"~!

Thanks for the info, I was kind of surprised at the price. Gander around here can be quite pricey at times. It is time to own a 1911 and not another plastic M&P

Are the basic parts on an S&W 1911 the same size as the rest? I saw one at Gander also, but the salesman said the beavertail grip safety is slightly flatter, and the sight recesses were also different. Is this true ??

Who cares if it has the billboard? What barrel (http://xavierthoughts.blogspot.com/2006/09/briley-barrels.html) does it have?

$550 is a good price for a used, basic SW1911, assuming it is in good shape. they are fine shooting guns. I bought two at great prices to trade off later, but they shot so well, I've kept them and put another, a used SW1911PD on layaway.

I have heard the Wilson beavertail is a direct swap. I have not tried to swap it out, no reason to really. My fixed sight SW1911 uses a Novak rear sight, so I assume they use the Novak cut.

Early SW1911s used a lot of aftermarket parts, including a Briley barrel (http://smith-wessonforum.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/520103904/m/6821035541/p/1). I was fortunate enough that my used SW1911s were from this lot.
