You should have bought it. It is one of the more reliable inexpensive pump guns on the market. Check out the "Shotgun World" forum for some excellent reviews of this gun.

I don't have one... yet. As soon as I have the cash (next week) I plan on buying the 8 shot model.
My understanding is that it's an extremely good value.

I own a Maverick 18" Knoxx clip fed modified. It has a lot of slop in the trigger, but other than that shoots well. Accessory wise, the Mossy 500 has more going for it. If you look at the list of accessories available for the 500 you will find that a lot of them specifically read NOT FOR MAVERICK. My humble opinion is to spend the $$ and get the Mossy500 or Remington.

The maverick won't take mossberg 500 fore-ends without having an entire mossber action bar and fore-end assembly. Stocks are compatable between the 2, but the maverick has a slightly different trigger assembly, and safety location, as well as not having the reciever drilled and tappped for a scope mount or ghost rings.
I own a mossberg 500a and a maverick 88 28" barrel.
These guns are nearly identical, and I would not hesitate for a moment to get the maverick. My mossberg's action is smoother, but not by much, and the triggers are the same.
Go for it!

We have several 88s in the family. They are tough and reliable.

I own one, and love it. Hard to beat for value, and frankly it's hard to imagine needing anything more from a shotgun.

Thats not entirely true. Most come with the ribbed synthetic foregrip, and these cannot be replaced because they are riveted onto the action tube. Here's an example:

However, some Mavericks have a checkered synthetic foregrip, and those are removable. For whatever reason, the only place I've seen that sells this version of the Maverick is Walmart. It might be a WallyWorld exclusive, as its not listed on the Mossberg/Maverick website. I own this type, and replaced the sythetic in favor of a wood set from a Moss 500 last year.
You CAN replace the foregrip if it looks like this:
