I just picked this one up. Do the Targets have to have the Coltwood thumbrest stocks? Or do the adjustable sights make it a Target. I need some input on this. SN 38,000 range. Thanks for the input, Bill

Bill,
I don't know.
However, Bob Rayburn (http://www.colt22.com/) does.
Enjoy!
(According to Bob's website, you have a Match Target, I think. Apparently, it was only offered in 1950. Ask Bob to be certain)

X-Breath, what am I too do with you... :uhoh:
The Match Target Woodsman had a heavy, slab-sided barrel, either 4 1/2 or 6 inches long, and adjustable sights.
The Target Woodsman had a round barrel, 6 inches long.
The Sport Woodsman was the same with a 4 1/2 inch barrel.
All usually came with plastic "Coltwood" thumbrest stocks and adjustable sights. A less expensive Huntsman line had a fixed rear sight and either wood or plastic stocks without the thumbrest.
During the early 1960's the Sport Woodsman cost $74.75 MSRP, and being in a generous mood, I'd pay the current owner that new price... The Old Fuff is all heart... :D
Oh, serial number 38,000 would be around 1972.

That gun was made in 1951. Later on, for reasons unknown, they reverted to the heel type magazine catch. They were excellent guns; if you managed to snag an extra magazine, you are doubly blest; they are $35 or so if available. The later magazines can be made to work by filing a notch, but the originals are better.

According to R.L. Wilson, neither of us can read. He lists the following numbers as the one starting at the beginning of the year.
1950: 35,751 S
1951: 86,200 S
1972 029,901 S
1973 039,901 S
I missed the "0" prefix. :o

Alrighty then.........:p
Bob Rayburn (http://www.colt22.com/) calls this Woodsman a "Sport", due to the barrel length. Bob is pretty much the authority on the Colt Woodsman. He literally wrote the book, and sells it from his website. Bob states:The earliest version of the 2nd series Sport, with the Coltswood stocks and no thumbrest. After Colt switched to injection molded stocks, at about serial number 71200-S, the Sport Model was furnished with thumbrest stocks.
They look the same to me.
Nice pistol you have there Bill! How does she shoot?

so it is the Sport model. Xavierbreath - I took it out for the first time this morning, and it shot a bit high with regular velociity Blazer .22 ammo which is all I had. I have a few Woodsman mags and found a third series one which had the homemade notch that Jim Keenan mentioned in his reply. It worked flawlessly as did the correct original second series mag that came with the pistol. Lucked out on that one as I will not need to buy a spare one. By the way, I checked for one on EBay this morning and it is up to $86 with over a day to go, seems a bit expensive to me. Link below if anyone needs one badly.
